In this video I show how to make a backdrop with skies, buildings and streets. For this I use the database of images from LARC rail products. I explain how to create extra depth and to build a composition. After selecting the images we build that actual background. Get ready for heaps of tips and tricks!

Very well laid out. The central street becomes the focal point with everything to the left showing right-side facades and everything to the right showing left-side facades. Now if only we could model our craftsman kits to have the matching perspective! That's the biggest challenge with urban backgrounds. If you follow the roof & window lines along an urban receding street forward to the actual back edge of the layout (the 'horizontal' building lines always emanating from the zero focal point), the front modeled structures would have to be built in trapezoidal 3-D. And the layout would have to tilt downward toward the front. I prefer rural settings with only far off random structures and no streets receding into the backdrop (as interesting as they are). Using structures, fencing and some fauna to hide the layout/backdrop transition, it can be made to appear the land drops off at the back edge of the layout, reappearing as a field, hill or mountain further away. For what it's worth, I'd shift the left side industrial building 3-4 cm to the right, covering up the light brick structure, leaving only the much further away structures visible. And I'd rotate the two stores counterclockwise to match their sidewalls to the pictured buildings on the right side of the street - adjusting the layout road to work with it. That said, all that work was a real tour-de-force of proper background making!

Hi Frank, Sorry it took me a bit longer to reply, as I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. It's a tricky balance. Sometimes you see a layout with only front facing backgrounds with any perspective or depth. That doesn't look right in my opinion. And true perspective requires these 3D trapezoid building you mention. I have actually seen those once in a MRR magazine. Looking at the main CD&TRRA layout, I think I'll use the perspective street extensions everywhere. Provided that you can't see 2 at the same time. For all other locations ill refer to flatter structures and maybe one or two with perspective if it fits. Ill definitely use greenery when possible but there is only so much one can hide! On the diorama I'll use a fence as well. That will create an extra layer of depth. And hopefully be more of a focal point than the backdrop itself. Thanks dor the pointers. I find it now too busy. I dont know exactly which ones you are referring to, but when the scenery is more complete ill do a revisit. And probably leave a few of the in between layers out. Good to hear you liked it 👍🏻 Cheers!
