I'm a Nasrani belongs to the Syro Malabar Church. Even though we mostly don't celebrate Qurbana in Suriyani, most of the masses are STILL word to word translation of the Suriyani Qurbana. There are still parishes where Qurbana is in Suriyani and in a lot of parishes, in special occasions, there are full Suriyani or bilingual Suriyani-Malayalam Qurbana. Many words we use in Malayalam (or other translations) mass are also Suriyani.

I believe the Eastern Catholic Churches need to be given more attention and recognition and I pray that they will develop and flourish. I am a Roman Catholic as most Catholics are but not everyone in the world can relate to or express their Catholic faith through the Roman Rite.

I recently was introduced to the Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen Illinois because my Roman Catholic Church remains mostly shuttered- it was so great to be in Communion and receive the body and the blood ! Absolutely beautiful in worship and the chanting of prayers !i feel blessed to have found this

@@MW-he4cp It's perfectly alright to visit orthodox churches and witness the miracles in their church. They might be our seperated brethren, but they are our brothers. Christ is present with them as much as he is with us.

My husband is first generation Ukrainian American and was born into the Byzantine Rite. I converted as a baptized adult into the Roman Rite. I see beauty in both the East and the West. I love the unique yet still sacred differences of the Tridentine and the Byzantine Liturgy (what I’m most familiar with).

I attended a Roman Catholic High School. Learning about our Eastern Catholic Brethren was an important part of our Education. Our Religion teacher, Sister Vera, memory eternal, felt it was very important for us to understand the One Holy and Apostolic Catholic Church in its entirety. In our family we have Roman, Ukrainian and Italo-Greek Catholics.

We almost went Orthodox trying to find reverence in church. The TLMs we attended did not live up to the experience we had at the Antiochian church in particular.... but by the grace of God, we were recently led to the Maronite Catholic church through a new friend, and have now become parishioners there. I'm partial to the unleavened bread/host for the Eucharist, so for me, the Maronite church has it all :)

Just stumbled upon this video and certainly grateful. Gives further insight into liturgical/sacramental worship which is exceptionally helpful to those of us brought up in a non-liturgical, non-sacramental Protestant setting. Also gives me hope if things within the pre Vatican II Roman Catholic Church continue to down spiral. Liturgical and sacramental worship will be preserved.

When I was Roman Catholic, I used to frequently attend the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. I was disappointed to see Eastern Catholics treated as the red headed step kids of Rome. Some Roman Catholic parishes even refused to given communion to babies who had already received their first communion in the Melkite Church. Many Roman Catholics does not realize they have Eastern brothers and sisters. I am now Greek Orthodox so this conflict no longer exists for me. I feel united to all Christians and I don't get hung up on the jurisdictional issues.

I became a Traditional Latin/Western Rite Catholic in 1978 after converting from Orthodox Judaism. At the time Tridentine Latin Masses and other traditional Sacraments were hard to find. The priest of our trad chapel told us that if we couldn't find a Tridentine Latin Mass, we should go to the Eastern Rite Catholics bc unlike the novus ordo missae at the time, they kept the original words of Christ in the Consecration (pro vobis et pro multis, but in Old Church Slavonic of course). Consequently over the past 40 years I have come to feel very comfortable "breathing" with both "lungs" of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church! I go between the two "lungs" depending on which is available to me where I am living. If you crave diversity, the Catholic Church is the place to find it!😊 Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus/Svjat, svjat, svjat! (And might I add, "Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh" from the original 2nd Temple Hebrew liturgy which the Church superseded when Christ died on the Cross).

I was baptized in a Melkite Greek Catholic Church. I did my other sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church (Roman rite). Sadly, I don’t know much about the eastern churches. It’s time to learn!!

The oldest liturgy on record is the Eastern Catholic - Syro-Malankara Rite begun by Saint Jude the Apostle! (actually Judas, NOT the Isacariot.) This did not develop from "inculturation." I respectfully submit.

The Syro Malankara Rite uses the same Liturgy as the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. That would be the Divine Liturgy of St James right?

We have a couple of Byzantine Catholic churches locally where I live . They are very lovely, and they actually remind me of the Russian orthodox churches I toured when in high school and took Russian Class and belonged to Russian Club. I have yet to attend a Byzantine Catholic Mass, though I hope to do so in the near future. I have been given to understand they are very similar to the old Tridentene Masses the Roman Catholic church once celebrated, and which I should still like to experience at least once in my lifetime, if it is still possible. I believe His Holiness, Pope Emeritus Benedict gave permission for the Tridentene Mass to be celebrated once again. A friend told me once, and the priest just confirmed in the video that if you attend a Byzantine Catholic Mass, it counts as your Sunday Mass. However, if you attend a Greek Catholic Mass, it does not count, because they are not in full communion with the Church, even though the name suggests otherwise. Thank you for the introduction of the similarities and differences between East and West.

I have a few comments to your statements. If you attend a Byzantine Catholic Church, you will participate in a Divine Liturgy, not a Mass. I don't know who told you if you attend a Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy, it does not count. Many Byzantine Catholic Churches were at one time called Greek Catholic. For example, the church where I was baptized was named St. Nicholas Greek Catholic Church. Some time after I was born, the churches came to be known as Byzantine Catholic. The churches were called Greek Catholic because Ss. Cyril & Methodius (who were from Greece) evangelized the Slavs. Our churches changed to using the term "Byzantine (which generally means the origins are in Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria or Jerusalem) so that we did not identify with an ethnicity. There is an Orthodox group out of Johnstown, PA that became Orthodox after the ban on Bishops ordaining married men to the presbyterate was put in place in 1929. My mother always told me the Pope kicked 2 married priests out of the church she attended as a child. I could never convince her that would have never happened. A professor in the seminary used to say he invited people to attend his parish to participate in the Divine Liturgy but not push them to join the church. He wanted them to experience the Divine Liturgy once in their lifetime on earth so that when they got to heaven they knew what was going on. May Paradise Consume Us!!!

@@lawrencehendricks8708 Lawrence, I thought that our Eastern sister's and brothers also referred to it as Mass. There isn't much difference except the name, is there? You still celebrate the Eucharist, as we do. Do you also recite the Profession of Faith(Nicene Creed)? Do you pray the Confetior? Do you sing the Gloria? I would just like to know more. As for the Greek Catholics, a friend(who has now passed away) told me that Greek Catholics were more affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church, and that they did not recognize the Holy Father as the Head of the Church; therefore, they were not in full spiritual communion with us; however, Ukranian and Polish Catholics are.( Polish Catholics are pretty obvious, considering St. John Paul was Polish) I obviously have a lot to learn. Do you have Holy Communion every Sunday, as we do? All the sacraments? Confession? Confirmation? Am I correct to guess you love the Blessed Mother as much as we do? Is there much difference between us? I hope I'm not being rude. I am curious about my Eastern brother's and sisters, and want to know more.

At Lourdes....the response of the Lady to Bernadette was "I am the Immaculate Conception"....This concept was new and certainly not known to Bernadette...Therefore I would think the Eastern Churches do not believe in Lourdes ...they do not believe in the Immaculate Conception.....this seems to be the major difference in our beliefs....Though the Eastern Catholic Churches are very beautiful as are the people ...Our beliefs are different...thank you

@@catbach8525 , the East gave the Roman Church to leverage the Immaculate conception. The same can be said for the Dormition/Assumption. It's what Dr Taylor said about the Eastern Churches still have a strong deference to Liturgical text / hymnography, which informs belief. The Western Church still has it, it's just not in emphasis, sadly.

They have their own rosary called a prayer rope (chotki). They use it to pray "The Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus, Son of God, Have Mercy on Me, a sinner)" along with other prayers. As to whether they can use our rosary, I think they can but it's more of a personal devotion. I'm Roman Catholic but I have a chotki too that was given to me. I also pray "The Jesus Prayer" during certain moments.

Depends on the church. My church - the SyroMalabar Church has been so heavily Latinized, over 300 years, that we have the rosary and many of the other customs from the Latin/Roman Church. In fact, in our Indian state of Kerala- we are referred to as Roman Catholic Syrian Christian (RCSC) - as that's how Latinized we are. Most SyroMalabar family daily prayer or family prayer consists of the Rosary, Litany of the BVM, and the Divine Chaplet of Mercy. All of these are pure customs from the Latin Church.

Some do. The Byzantine Catholic church I used to belong to was mostly made up of former Latin Catholics, so much so that there was a rosary recitation before Divine Liturgy on Sunday. One of the wonderful things about Eastern Catholicism is that you're free to embrace traditions from East and West alike. The Orthodox generally use a prayer rope in place of the rosary, and there are Eastern Catholics who prefer that. There's also the Prayer Rule of the Theotokos, handed down by St. Seraphim of Sarov, the Orthodox saint, which is very similar in form to the rosary.

"Patrimony" is the key word. The major argument for the return and maintenance of the TLM, besides, inter alia, the appeals to aesthetics, must be "patrimony". The NO has no natural fatherhood.

I switched to the Ruthenian Byzantine Rite. It’s not because I didn’t like Rome, it’s because the Byzantine rite brought me closer to God, increased my prayer life, and is a better fit to my faith. My wife is a little reluctant and chose to remain with Rome, however canon law of the east states our children are the rite of their father, although they were baptized in a Roman Catholic Church, when I formally switched rites my children were Chrismated and received their first holy communion. My wife acknowledges that our children are Byzantine and she attends Divine Liturgy with us, while remaining Roman. I joke with her and say it’s because she doesn’t want to fast 😅.

We participated in Vatican 2. If you mean our Liturgy, yes. It actually returned us back to our ancient rites and removed the forced Latinizations that went on. Lumen Gentium.

The Eastern Catholic Churches believe in the papacy... that’s what makes us Catholic. We are Catholics, but the term Roman Catholic only refers to Catholics of the Latin rite.

It was because of the Papal Schism of 1054 that broke the eastern and western. Eastern wasted no Pope and no inviability of the Pope. How is the eastern church not in schism???

Because they're not Orthodox. They use Orthodox worship but are in full communion with the pope. That's what makes them different from the Orthodox churches.

The Eastern Catholic Churches are mainly Churches that came back into union with Rome after the schism. However, two of the Eastern Catholic Churches (the Maronite Catholic Church and the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church) never left communion with Rome. Two others (the Melkite Catholic Church and the Armenian Catholic Church) were formally out of communion with Rome for centuries, but always had factions of clergy and laity loyal to Rome, and later the entire Church decided to come back.

Eastern/Oriental Catholicism retains their respective traditions while they are in communion with Rome. The good thing is that the roman innovations and forgeries are not mandatory in these Eastern/Oriental Churches except Chaldean and Maronite churches. Sedevacantists are extremely hateful towards Eastern/Oriental Christianity be it in communion with Rome or outside of it. Based on my experience with SSPX, they are extremely anti-Orthodox.
