The Battle for Carentan and the surrounding area took place between June 12-13, 1944. The city is dominated by high ground to the southwest and southeast, all of which was under German control during the battle.
Over the following days numerous photos and films were taken by the men of the Signal Corps units documenting the Allied Landings in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord.
In this episode of WW2 Wayfinder, I will take you on a journey to Carentan to examine the various Then and Now photos of the men of the 101st Airborne and provide a breakdown of why they are important!
Apologies in advance for the sound as I had some microphone issues during filming combating the high winds!
If you enjoy this Then and Now episode I have lots more on my channel if you have time to watch!

The little known memorial to the bridging officer who was sadly killed was especially an eye opening pearl of knowledge. Hi Jon Thanks for sharing another great video! Caretan looks to be such a beautiful old town with its buildings that were mostly saved from the war. It’s fantastic that they have kept their heritage alive and tried to keep the same appearance with the post war renovations and rebuilding. Keep up the good work brother ❤😊

I'm a late-comer to this one: don't know how I missed it 8 months ago. You had a few tough locations to marry up...and I wonder if you ever ask locals if they can help fix the current locations from your old photos. In any case, another great video....in relation to a battle location that I feel has been neglected by Historians of the post D-Day ETA.

i wonder if folks who never served in the infantry ever wonder why soldiers are always crapped out when they can be. there's an old infantry saying - "never stand if you can sit, never sit if you can lay down, and never stay awake if you can sleep." because you never know when the next chance to rest will come.

Thank you so much 😃 Next video 👉 Bloody Gulch 😏 I visited Carentan few months ago, like Sainte Mère Église, Brecourt Manor, Utah&Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc. All great places. I like to be there and I hope to leave in this area. I miss Normandie. In my town Auneau (France - Centre Val de Loire), we honor General Patton and the Third Army. There is a nice monument. When I see this monument, the picture of General Patton and the US flag flotting, I am so grateful. Thank you too Colonel Guy de la Vasselay (Maire d’Auneau-Bleury-Saint Symphorien) that made « la voie de la Liberté », it start at Ste Mère Église and the last milepost at Bastogne, but the first one was created in 1946 and it was in Saint Symphorien. Thank you USA and all allies 🙏

Check out my episode on Falaise and I have a whole itinerary of British episodes for next year planned, but since the early 90’s I’ve been passionate about the 101st so I do gravitate towards that Divisions actions. I also covered my Grandfathers landing on Gold Beach last year but will be looking to document his war with the infantry over the next 2/3 years 😃

I look forward to seeing them. I have been on three battlefield tours with Leger and enjoyed them all. It would be nice to have more time at the different sites and be able to see different ones. I did the Battle of the Bulge tour in 2017, I think, and at that time, we were able to visit Bois Jaques without paying admission. I agree with you that it is wrong to charge, though if it helps stop vandalism, it may have some plusses. There is a fantastic museum in Bastogne, in it you can experience an air raid coming over.

Great Video as always, i do enjoy watching them! I would like to see if you're able to, to create some content on the British and Canadian battles that took place in Normandy and further inland, after all, there were more troops from those nations that landed on D-Day than the americans but it seems to be ignored or acknowledged by many the loses, sacrifices and battles won by those nations. I think it would make for great content that's not been covered to death already. I would't want your great channel to become a Holywood film company ignoring and airbrushing out all the other allied nations acheivements, as all we ever here about (not just you) is what the americans did. Keep up the great work, hopefully i get to see D-Day from a different angle from you real soon as i enjoy your filmaking! :-)
