Today we make Babel Fish candy to celebrate towel day for 2019, an event to celebrate the works of the late author, Douglass Adams who wrote the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
We will make these tasty babel fish in Lemon Meringue Pie flavor, and we will use some late 1800's candy making equipment.

Same here! Always fun to see peoples reactions when they hear that. I actually had to use my copy as a pillow for a while, and I can say that it is thick enough that it wasn't putting my head at an awkward angle and ended up being quite comfortable.

I have a signed copy of Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I got both signed by him in Venice Beach California when I was a young teen, but I lost Hitghhiker's many, many years ago. He said he was working on So Long and Thanks for all the Fish at the time and I asked him why did the bowl of petunias say "Oh no. Not again." This question really took him by surprise at the time.

I happened to be in Tallahassee for a doctor's appointment recently and made my husband stop by. I was going to get some ice cream but wasn't feeling too well and just picked up some of these instead. Absolutely delicious. Not too tart like some lemon candies but still have lots of flavor. He lived the honey sunflower candies a bunch as well. I'm definitely going to stop again next time I'm in the area, and hope that maybe I'll get to see you making candy when I do. :)

You are definitely a hoopy frood who really knows where your towel is. The Hitchhiker’s Guide got me through school! I would have loved to have met DNA, but nobody really comes to rural South Carolina. By the time I was old enough to travel, he was already gone.

That's an amazing story about meeting Douglas Adams! He has been an inspiration to me my whole life (mainly because my brother read the whole book to me when I was a kid in the late nineties).. I got really into Hitchhiker's Guide right around the year 2000, in middle school, and then he died about a year later, which was shocking.. I then read "The Salmon of Doubt" in highschool, and was surprised when the Hitchhiker's Guide movie came out during my senior year! (Also, I had no idea about towel day lol! Thanks for doing this video!).

Oddest thing in the universe. And amused you found a version of the old BBC series theme. We were living there when the initial radio series came out--only time I can remember us gathering around the radio at a certain time every week rather than the tellie.

I found the radio drama after I found the book. Several years after. They broadcasted on a public radio station in New Jersey that I could pick up in Brooklyn fortunately. I remember listening to one episode a week on an old tube radio that I loved because I loved Old tube radios. I would turn the lights out when I was about sixteen and fall asleep listening to the radio dramas. I still love radio dramas especially the adventures of Jack Flanders by zbs media

@@LoftyPursuits We brought the book back with us when we moved back stateside in 81, but it took awhile before people knew what we were talking about. Haha. Sort of like Doctor Who; no one knew what Daleks were until they started with Chris Eccleston's Doctor then people suddenly understood what scared me as a kid haha. Incidentally, another odd BBC sci fi (pretty obscure) is "Sapphire and Steel" if you're bored.

I discovered Doctor who weirdly on a trip to England. I'd read through all the books I had and I bought two novelizations in the airport in London. I read them on my way back and enjoy the very much. I was very surprised to see that in New York City somebody was broadcasting Doctor who on a normal advertising station wor. if I think was the only commercial station in the US to ever broadcast Doctor who. I saw the episode The novelization was based off. I was sure they did the TV show based on the books not the other way around as it actually happened. Dad to synchronicity I got to know the guy who did the novelization on that book.

Interesting candy. I must visit some time. Wonderful Douglas Adams story. Someone gave me a copy of Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I didn't get it, so I stopped reading after just a couple of chapters. Then I picked up the first book and it all suddenly made sense. I was attending college at the time. Once, while reading in the Student Union, I laughed out loud and everyone just looked at me like I was nuts. I up ended up reading the complete series, along with his Dirk Gently series. Funny and talented man gone too soon.
