I posted a comment/question on another video about a shot I have trouble with in American 8 ball and this is the other shot I needed work on (the other being pocketing a ball sitting deep in the center of the pocket from a long distance without scratching) and I believe this will absolutely help!! I do avoid it when possible but it does happen frequently and veering towards the rail is usually the exact result. Gonna have to give this one a practice as well as figure out the first shot I had a question about.

I have noticed that side effect helps with these types of shots, thanks for reinforcing and clarifying it more, the ghost ball and the line is what i use to aim but at larger angles i tend to look at the side of the white ball if it hits the side of the other ball, sometimes i try to barely it the other ball with the white and i miss.

Gady Barry, Many of us have difficulties cueing at angles across and along cushions; especially side cushions medium length shots for example say a pink from along the green cushion..Do you have any tips here? Another tricky one is forming a bridge and staying steady around corner pockets with longish shots.. thanks, Dan

I've heard another theory about why you would use a little right hand side (English) as you did in your demonstration. When the cue ball collides with the object ball at a 30 to 45 degree angle as in your demonstration, the friction between the cue ball and the object ball will tend to throw or push the object ball to the right, in the direction of the tangent line as you have suggested. The opposite will occur when cutting to the left. But if you add a little right hand side when cutting to the left, the cue ball will tend to roll off the object reducing or eliminating the friction between the two balls and thus eliminating the throw effect. Clean, polished balls, without chalk marks will also reduce the throw effect.

I was just having this problem the other day!

The thing is, when playing with side like that you're not aiming at the actual line of the shot, you have to compensate for the varying amount of side, the distance between cueball and object ball and the way the table plays. This is the thing I struggle with, however much I practice that kind of heavily angled shot.

THE most important thing I realized about these shots a few years ago is not to take them on! If you miss the pot (and even for a player as good as Barry it's a 50% shot) you are almost guaranteed to leave your opponent an easy pot, look where the white ends up. It is easy to play safe instead and leave the white "glued" to the top cushion. There's only one big break prize in our league and I'll never win it anyway!

The use of the "Ghost balling" method and picturing the line the object ball will (hopefully) take are definitely useful techniques. The suggested applicaction of "running' side to 'assist' the pot however seems to just be making the pot more difficult as 'guessing' the amount of throw (which will include pace, nap and humidity (I play in Australia)) seems to be making a difficult process more so. Just my opinion.

But if I put right hand side on that example shot, it is going to push the cue ball to the left, which will push the object ball into the cushion, before it gets to the pocket.

Your shot appeared to have a lot more than a 'little touch of right hand side'; was this the fault of the camera angle.

That is one of three ways to execute that shot. It all depends on what position you want the cue ball to finish.

Hi Barry, your videos are great and have helped a bunch, thanks! However, Ive been playing for about a year and a half and a month ago noticed my cue'ing is not "straight"(Perpetually fail the test of shooting the cue ball down a line and having it touch the tip on rebound) and Ive tried absolutely everything but nothing seems to bring my cue onto the aim line fully. Ive tried: -Every reasonable elbow position -Every reasonable stance -Every vision center -Adjusting the bridge hand -having all different kinds of fixed points on my chest and body Nothing seems to work. I know theres something I have not fixed because everytime I think ive found the solution and pot the next 15-20 balls great before I start missing simple pots again, would really appreciate any help, thanks!

Hello Sir. I'm always striving towards attaining perfection in the game. I had a cue which I was using from 2 years. I was consistently scoring atleast 50+ breaks whenever I got a chance. The cue got bent somehow and from then on my game became worse day by day. I decided to buy a new cue and now my game is even more worse. The difference in the cue is that my previous tip was 8.5 and now it's 9.3-9.4 and .5oz heavier. Can you please help me out?

Sir i have been following your videos for more than four years. i have an issue which i couldn't find addressed in any of your videos. when i play the shot low on cue ball i more likely to pot the object ball but using top side of the cue ball i more likely to miss the pot. Secondly if i play an over powered shot i pot if i try to pot with much low power or dead weight i miss most of the time. please make some video on these issues. Thanks

Do you have to get a certain white ball to get good spins cause it seems to me that whenever I try back spin it still goes a touch forward.

Dear Barry, It's been a long time I wrote to you or I had to take any suggestions. I want to congratulate you on Kyren's performance in the wsc18. He has improved a lot and the credit equally goes to you as well. I have a very basic query that how to make sure on every shot, when we do a pre shot routine, that a player is on the line of the shot EVERYTIME? Dear coach barry I want to ask you why you think looking away after seeing the object ball defies the purpose? I look away sometimes and while im looking away im visualizing the angle so that when i look back at the object ball i can see the angle again with fresh vision, definitely it helps more to maintain vision while moving but is it ALWAYS the case ? One of our club members told me once, that pros do play these kind of shots with side, because the object ball have side effect in the inside of the pocket. Isn’t this nonsense?
