Several subscribers were looking for a log splitter comparison! Here it is. The BRAVE 20 TON Dual Split log splitter comparison to the GRIPO Kinetic wood splitter. The Kubota B2601 Compact Tractor and the STIHL MS251 play supporting roles to get the tree down and the rounds blocked. This time we use blocks from a standing dead maple - pretty recent, so the wood is a mix of partly a little green and a little dry. I hope it is helpful and informative. Cheers!

Both machines are nice to see in operation. It's the second splitter contest and so far, you seem to choose the fastest each time!!! When a sizeable tree sits on it's stump, I don't chain it directly to the tractor, as you never know what the tree can do. The base of the tree can slide on the ground and pull your tractor FEL sideways. This tree is twice the weight of the tractor, if not more. I rather tie a chain between a nearby strong tree and the base of tree to fall. Then I pull (with another chain length) perpendicular to the middle of that first chain. Any kickback would be to the other tree, not the tractor. You seem to get better weather than I got!!! My best guess, it was on a week day? Thanks GP!

I have the dual splitter from Northern tool and it is exactly the same as the Brave. I will say that the kinetic splitters are fast, but the dual spliiters are "somewhat" safer. No need to slam the piece into the wedge. I say "somewhat" because it is easy to get complacent and begin to split the other direction while looking at what you want to split next. Removed the end of my left ring finger when I got it between the wood and the small cleat that prevents the wood from sliding. Fortunately not all the way to the first joint so I just call it "stubby"!! And I have split and burnt wood for 40+ years.

Good vid. Thanks for putting it up. Perfect time of year to be in the woods ! From what I could see , the kinetic definitely was faster by a fair amount. High stumps are nice when cutting firewood. Easier to work. . A Humboldt face is considerably safer when the tree being fell may hangup. But, you got er down just fine. Good job!

Hey thanks Gumboot! I am still learning how to fell them. It is certainly not as easy as it looks. Definitely something you get good at over a long time and practice. I am not sure what a Humboldt is but I will check out some videos to learn. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Cheers!

@@GPOutdoors A Humboldt face = the face( smile in the case of a Humboldt , frown in the case of a conventional ) The face cut out of the stump . A conventional face gets taken out of the butt of the log. When cutting firewood I often make the stump 2 firewood rounds tall. Then cut the stump off as flush to the ground as I can. I am not a fan of the kinetic splitters because you need to ram the lever into the gear to catch the flywheels, else the pieces will clash. Good for light work, but over time that movement will hurt your arm. I prefer the hydrologic splinters. Btw, That 2-way “dual” splitter with tables looks awesome.

Good morning Warped. Thanks for tuning in. This one was ok I would say. Yes, rim guard in the rears. Early on, as I was learning, I will admit there were a few times I lifted some loads that were heavy for the tractor but I quickly learned that I can "feel" when something is too heavy, if you know what I mean. Plus I look down at the front tires to see if they start to pancake. But thanks - always appreciate a good eye and advice. Take goo d care and all the best!

I own one acre: dual split equip seem safer for novice helpers and safer stacking. *** The brave equipment seems a good starter. Can the accuator be made automatic? Would save time in setup as the gripo was automatic. A table can be made from large stumps on both sides of the equipment? Save energy on picking up trunk halves that need resplits. Maybe no table on opposite side and do resplits later for that set. I like the presentation on this video because it shows the equipment in action versus talk during, helps me gauge operation. Gripo fast splitting half of the wood with one man, good for two man operation, con allot of operator motion in a stooped position. Brave fast setup, fast repeat setup, controlled pace, con slower splitting and less opportunity for fast-safe two man operation.

I end up having to clean up a lot of really big downed trees every year. I block them up and then I have always had 2 guys (some times 3) wrestling the big blocks into the vertical position hof my 22 ton splitter. This year I had a friend that runs a welding shop build me a boom for the splitter. I put a hand crank winch on it and use a set of logging tongs and I can handle the big blocks alone where 2 guys really struggled with them before. I try to position the splitter slightly downhill from the blocks so that when I crank them in, they spin right into place. I leave a slight tension on the blocks as I split, then keep spinning them in place until they absolutely won't hold together anymore, then I can handle the remaining pieces with ease. I wish sometimes that I had a you tube channel so I could show yourself, Mech Uno, and Outdoors With The Morgans how I am set up. Have a great day G.P. Gary from Iowa

It is very quick and easy to set up a channel, or perhaps post it on the channel you are currently commenting from. Our friend Joe Lesage, built a firewood system that also has a boom on it. Turned out really great. Not sure if you watch his channel but it is called Joe Lesage. You can see it there. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing Gary! Cheers!

@stingray4540 4 жыл бұрын
The kinetic is less than half the cycle time so it can be twice as fast, but that depends on the operator, are you getting the most out of it or are you putsing around moving the wood unnecessarily, smashing it onto the wedge, etc.

This was fun watching.... Just wondering something ....Do you usually cut your trees that high off the ground. After cutting wood and logs all my life I find this can be dangerous if the tree kicks back off the stump. Keep warm enjoy your videos
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Good morning Logger John! Thanks for the q. I have been asked that before - many folks do things a little differently for sure, I guess. The reason we cut up that high is for comfort and safety ( notwithstanding the potential for kick back), and because we get a lot of snow in the winter - snowmobiles and ATVs are going through the forest, so leaving it high leaves it visible (since we don't dig out the stumps very often). The alternative would be to cut it down at ground level, as low as possible but we also have pretty rocky ground. At some point if we choose to remove the stump, then we get the extra wood out first. But always interested in finding out how others do things - helps to learn and also many times I find a new or better way of doing things. Cheers and thanks again!

@@GPOutdoors, once you've cut it high, and then decide to remove the stump, I think you are better off removing the stump using the high stump for leverage and THEN cutting the extra wood from the stump rather than taking out the extra wood before removing the stump.

The slower Dual Split will have more torque if they have the same engine. The Gripo would cycle faster. The power is the same, used differently. Put a difficult piece of wood in and watch the Gripo struggle. Same effect as shorter vs taller gearing.

I just don't understand why they didn't change the activation handle on the gripo. It really looks like a pain to have to pull it up, especially when your gloves are wet. I would add a see - saw mechanism , Where you could just smack down one side to raise the other to pull the activation handle up. I know it's a safety thing.

Good morning Charles. I think you are right - it is for safety but yes, it is definitely designed to ensure the engagement is a deliberate action. You have to pull it up pretty firmly to engage it. Have a great weekend!

@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Good morning T. Yes, much better to split that way with the big stuff. This kinetic doesn't tilt (I think you are right - I don't think any kinetic would be able to tilt) and it is pretty hard having to lift the big stuff up onto the rail. We don't have a lot of big stuff here but my neighbour keeps an old vertical in his shed for when he needs it. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I started too comment that the Dual Split was almost a clone of the harbor freight. But the Harbor has a high cyclic rate. Guy: Would have matched you if he would have just let the wood fall to the ground. He lost a lot of time throwing each piece over the the carry all.

Good morning Scott. A great question. I put some maple and elm that had knots in them through it. Most went through with one hit but several I had to hit more than once to get through. The impact is about 28,000 lbs so it is pretty effective. I personally prefer the Dual Split over all other splitters I have tried - pops knots every time now for two years. Very seldom ever caught the wedge and really efficient being able to split both ways. Thanks for the question and all the best!

I have a duel splitter from Northern Tools and after watching this video I’d say this is a totally inaccurate comparison. To get full advantage of a duel splitter you need to have two rounds on the splitter (one each side of the wedge ) also I’ve rarely had to take a full stroke to get a good split (the way Guy was). Place the round, split one direction far enough to get the next round on and split the other direction. If the first round does not split complete enough, rotate 90 degrees for the next split coming back-the first split usually falls out in the process of the next split. It’s all about technique using this machine. Not saying the duel splitter would have won this competition but it would have been much closer.

Hey good evening Cory. That's a great point. My favourite splitter is the Dual Split. And you are correct. As I have gained experience, I have been able to start doing exactly what you suggested above. I also, with smaller rounds, will add one or two on the side tables, in waiting until the current round is done. Thanks for the great thoughts and opinion. Cheers!

I don't know about the safety of it but not having to hold the handle on the kinetic spliter was a big advantage as to speed. The Dual spliter I like the better ability to control the split. Another thing I don't like to work as fast as the kinetic one can work you. Of course you could just slow down. I would be proud to own ether one.
