In this video I compare the equalizer of my Heritage Audio HA-73 EQ pre-amp against the UAD Neve 1073 and Analog Obsession Britchannel plugins.
I compare them on a snare top tracks and a vocal track after trying to match the sounds as well as possible, let you listen to the differences and show you the differences via a Pro-Q3 EQ match.

Exceptional, straightforward presentations. I don't understand why others can't review like you. You allow time for listeners with less well trained ears the time to actually listen. You explain what you're at a reasonable pace, allow time for listening , observation and understanding and so on. Just very well done. Superb video. Thank you for the careful analysis and EQ match graphs. Helps us to get past the "hardware is always better" bias. Think I might sell my HA-73.

Neither is better, they both get the job done. You don’t hear what hardware does unless you put it on a good amount of tracks..then you can hear the difference like separation between tracks. I hybrid mix and I’m not selling any of my hardware

A very nice, well balance test. To your credit, it doesn't seem like you tried to justify your purchase, by making the plugins seem inferior, which would've been somewhat natural, given how biased we all can be. In the snare test, I thought I could hear a small difference between the hardware and UAD with AA plugin being just the tiniest bit flatter than both of those (while still doing a good job)... but when I closed my eyes during the vocal test, I couldn't tell when you changed the channels, which is a valuable lesson in and of itself.

Thanks for your comment. Yes these can be made to sound very very close. I did some other tests with other units in which I could hear more of a difference.

The plug-ins try to emulate the 1073 sound, I hear exaggerated highs and the depth isn't quite there. The HA73 sounds more neutral and familiar with a balanced tone with slightly more depth than the other signals.

on the compressor side of things, UAD sounded warmless and I couldn't tell a difference between heritage and analog obsession. Incredible :)

The difference is huge, relatively speaking :P. Plugins tend to just not produce the same sweet high-end as hardware is able to do and your test reproduces it. There seems to be also a change in the body of the tone, but I can't place my finger on it exactly - I imagine the transformers plays a role in that. I do think you've gotten as close to an emulated sound as is possible though. To me however those differences are worth their weight enough to invest in hardware. Small differences do stack up, especially when spread over various outboard & multiple tracks. Pro-Tip with regards to plugins tho: Look into True Iron vst - It is ridiculously low cost and emulates transformers.. They've blown my mind.

Love AnalogObsession and UAD is great, but Hardware is amazing. Professionals that says are using plugins, are laying a lot i think, you can't change hardware by no plugin. AnalogObsession would need some other plugin first or after, like other Konsol, or Channel Strip, because it can't achieve warm, as UAD does, and both far from hardware warm, that is amazing.

hey noob question, as though i just got my ha-73 and im stoked! and i'm trying to do this test as fair as possible. but the gain knob on the UAD looks quite different than the ha-73. is the Zero position on UAD equivalent to the 30 position on the ha-73?

Not such a noob question; I don't think you can compare them like that. I just set the gain on the UAD to 0 and set the gain on the HA-73 to a sensible level. None of them went into distortion. So I have as much of the pure EQ sound as possible. Enjoy your HA-73!

Wederom fijne test, thanks. Ik kan niet zeggen dat ik veel verschil hoor tussen de plugins en de hardware deze keer. Vooral omdat je de settings op gehoor(en grafiek) zo identiek mogelijk maakt, is het verschil heel klein. Mij lijkt een 1073 plugin prima bruikbaar in de mix, zeker als je de hardware niet erbij hebt ter vergelijk. Met tracking zal het een ander verhaal zijn. Wellicht ook dat buizenapparatuur wat meer verschil geeft t.o.v. plugins als bij non-buizenspullen.

Bedankt. Ik gebruik deze EQ eigenlijk ook vooral tijdens opnemen en niet zozeer tijdens mixen. Tijdens mixen heb ik wel op de mix bus wat (andere) hardware voor de final touch 😋. En ééntje daarvan is idd een buizen EQ.

@@LanewoodStudios die pultec toch. Die kleuring vind ik ook echt bijzonder en duidelijk beter dan een plugin. Wat ik al zei, misschien is het verschil bij buizenapparatuur beter merkbaar.

De Hammer EQ van A-Designs zit op de mixbus. Pultec soms voor vocal track of tijdens opnames.
