I paid for the star witness lawyer against me in a conspiracy case and I knew he was trying to tell on me but after he got a good lawyer he decided he was playing on the wrong team and it was in his best interest to plead the 5th and not even identify me. Case dismissed. DA appealed. Case dismissed final.

On TV you see public defenders as some brand new, fresh out of law school, just took the bar, lawyer who has an office down the hall from the prosecutor. So, in Georgia, we don't have "public defenders" like most states do. Our "public defenders" are regular defense attorneys with their own practices who contribute so many hours to "pro bono" cases. It's free for the person being represented but there is a fund that is used to #1 pay the attorney & #2 pay for other costs associated with the defense. They literally do it for money. They have to contribute 50 hours a year to keep their credentials with the court but they bill them the same way they would bill a "private" client. It's just a different source for the money. The attorneys are the same. The only thing that is different is the client, who doesn't have the ability to pay directly. It can affect you because people are classist and they judge you by status. A lawyer can look down on you and not return your phone calls even though he's still getting the same $3,000 to represent you as he would from a private-pay client. This is the only benefit of getting a privately obtained attorney. They have more respect for you.
