When this came out in the summer of 1975 people listened to their radios without headphones and I remember being at the beach and there were a hundred little radios all over the beach tuned to the same radio station, playing this song, so as you walked along you could hear it just slightly, all the while you walked, like one long continuous play on all those tiny radios. It was magical.

True life experience: Summer 1975, 19 years old, driving my 69 Camaro convertible on the way home from my girlfiends house very late on a warm muggy night. Painfully in love with her but also terribly afraid of it because of where it could lead...this song comes on the radio. What the hell? Did they somehow read my mind and extract all my feelings then create a song from it!? I cannot listen to this today without becoming overwhelmed by a debilitating wave of nostalgia bringing with it all those same feelings from nearly 50 years ago. That's powerful! The girl? Yeah, I caved in and married her...October 75, lasted 7 years...the effects of this song on me...will last forever.

"I'm Not In Love" is a song by the British rock band 10cc, released in 1975. It was written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman and produced by Stewart. The song is about a man who tries to convince himself that he is not in love with someone, despite the fact that he is clearly still in love with her. He repeats the title phrase "I'm not in love" throughout the song as a sort of mantra, trying to convince himself of this fact. The lyrics touch on themes of denial, heartbreak, and the struggle to move on from a past relationship. The song is notable for its innovative use of technology, including multitrack recording and tape loops, which were used to create the song's distinctive sound. The band reportedly used a technique called "gizmo" to create the backing vocals, which involved recording individual syllables and then looping them together to create a choir-like effect. "I'm Not In Love" was a commercial success, reaching the top five in both the UK and US charts. It has since become a classic of 1970s pop and has been covered by a number of other artists. The song's innovative production and emotional lyrics have made it a staple of classic rock radio and a beloved song for many music fans.

I like what you wrote, your "he protests too much" theory, that he really is in love.. I remember beginning a relationship at the time it came out. Although a beautiful song, it's beauty seemed to elevate the message. I didn't like the song because of the repeated "I'm not in love." I felt insecure at the time. Here, is another interpretation, reputedly the songwriter's (from Wikipedia): Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife, to whom he had been married for eight years at that point, asked him why he did not say "I love you" more often to her. Stewart said, "I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her, 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah", it's not gonna mean anything eventually'. That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you', while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship."[5]

Best guy ever, but I wanted to spread my wings. He was devastated, but was consoled over time by a girl who he became friends with in college. They ended up married several years later. At one point we tried to work things out. Some things just aren’t meant to be and we both ended up happily married to other people. He passed away six years ago. It hit me hard. This song brings back those old sad feelings.

I'm 62 years old now and remember hearing this when it first came out. I was 15 . It was a beautiful song but had no special meaning to me till four years later. I'd fallen deeply in love at 17 with my first and in a certain special way only true love. The love that only a virgin heart can have. Then at 19 we parted ways. I knew it would happen eventually, but it didn't make the pain in my heart and soul any lesser. One day some time shortly after I heard this song on the radio again and it was like hearing it for the first time.. I'd heard it so many times before, but I'd never really heard it before till then. I cried,...... Today a tear still comes to my face when I hear it, but my tears are of gratitude to the girl I loved so very deeply in my heart. Thank you Katry K. You'll always be my first, and I'll always see your face in my memory when I hear this song. 10cc, thank you for what you did, because it seemed for a long time that every time I heard this beautiful tune, my wound healed a little bit more, because I knew mine wasn't the first broken heart.

Songs are like emotional time machines. When you hear a song you heard years ago, it can instantly transport you back to how you felt at that time. The music and lyrics connect with your memories, triggering the same emotions you experienced back then. It's like the song holds a piece of your past, and hearing it brings back the joy, sadness, or whatever you felt when that song was a part of your life.

In 1975, I spotted the most beautiful looking boy (he was 21) at a bar called Ty’s in Manhattan. It was crowded as usual on a Saturday night. Gradually the crowd moved him closer to where I was standing. I eventually said hello to him and not too long after he agreed to drive home with me to Brooklyn. It was a wonderful night. After making breakfast he said he had to get back to the city. He was visiting from a small town outside Pittsburgh. Driving over the Brooklyn Bridge on a sunny Sunday morning this song started playing on the radio. Whenever I hear it I think of those hours I shared with Michael Duffy. I never did see him again.

Strangely, I now remember this song playing on all the radios and stereos throughout town, during that summer of 1975 as well. This tune made it big on the charts. Each day, the skies seemed to be the deepest blue, the sun blazing hot, and each night seemed to be simply plastered with stars. I always loved going out, cruising the drag with my buddies, or with that one special chick. Life made sense then, emotions ran high, and we all seemed to have dreams. I recall my last day living in Butte Montana--where I was born and raised--and listening to this song in the car with my best friend. Warm wind from all the windows rolled down, gently whipped through our hair. I also remember glancing out at the darkening-violet shadows over-taking the rugged ridges and canyons of the huge Continental Divide, and I reminded myself it would be some time before I would see this mountain range again, because I would be heading to college in Minneapolis Minnesota the next day. I somehow knew that evening, I would never come back to this place to live, but I knew my heart would never leave it. I just knew, because tears clouded my eyes and they fatefully seemed to find their way down innocently-expectant cheeks... It had been a sign.

Admittedly, it has been far from perfect; in fact, at times, things have gotten downright dark, but everything that has crossed my path, has enriched me and made me a better person...at least I hope and pray for those around me. I'm still learning to be a better servant for others, and a much more positive influence within this difficult world. Thank you for your kind words and thoughts, Maureen. I really appreciate what you have shared with me. 🙂

I was 22 in 1975, months away from my first serious love and first marriage. Even with all the ensuing heartbreak, love to look back on those days.

This is one of those time machine songs that spark memories from the era. BTW: on Spotify I was the 308,356,054th listener to this song!

The recorded voices, along with the keyboards, give this song an ethereal and mystical atmosphere, causing a sensory and spiritual immersion that is difficult to explain in words.

Find The making of the song on YT .. That is actually the band members voice recorded over and over over...as there wasn't the technology.... Oh the womans voice was a girl that worked the studio

@@1bigrowdy l watched it long time ago. This was like painting a work of art, brushstroke by brushstroke. Magnificent!

No choirs, just the band members and a lot of creativity. No high-tech, machine produced sounds like today.

I used to enjoy falling asleep to this song as a kid. As an adult, watching "Guardians of the Galaxy" at the theaters on opening day, when this song came on, I fell in love with it all over again. 🎅🏾

1975..my daughter was 2 years young and my marriage had broken down-he was an alcoholic and I was not able to deal with him because I just immigrated from Germany to Canada -fell in love with a person who was (so I thought-) in love with me-I certainly was. Upon entering his apartment this song played on the radio always. My English was not good enough to understand everything but I did understood “ I’m not in love…” ; month later he broke up with me, I was lost and devastated. My poor baby girl she went through a lot with me; definitely it was a very uncertain time for me…it was a year later I meet my 2nd husband.
