We recently caught up with 'eel ace' Steve Pitts, who talks us through how and why he targets the mysterious eel. Steve has specifically targeted eels for over 40 years and would really like to get across how he fishes for the species from a conservation point of view. Steve started a campaign for 'safe fishing/lip hooking' eels, and in this video he discusses the avoidable problems with eel fishing, his "lip hooking" methods, as well as his most memorable captures.

check out the lip hooking videos on youtube, there is an excellent rig out there and i think is even for sale on ebay, its like a t-bar style with some shrink tubing and a short piece of thick fluorocarbon going through the tubing horizontally and looks like an excellent rig on the video i watched. hope this helps you and the host of this excellent video....AD QuickBite - How To Tie Phil Spinks T-Bar Eel Rig

Me and my 10 year old son have caught some cracking eels from the river Esk, here in Whitby over the years. Nothing over 2lb but we remember catching them thats for sure! It is absolutely mindblowing to know that there could be some monster eels such as shown here, further upstream somewhere........ This video is masterly in its delivery and shows that patience, skill, experience and the desire to be fishing has its rewards eventually...............;)

As a teenager growing up in west London in the 1970's I used to fish the Grand Union Canal all the time. I will never forget one particular night fishing session when I caught a big eel by design, pigs liver on a light ledger rig !! 4lb 10oz it weighed and what a fight !! I returned it successfully without harm, but I wish I had a camera/smartphone to record it !!

I've been fishing for eels for 48 years now. The largest I've landed is 6 3/4 lb on a drain just north of Cambridge. I fish Hunstrete for them in late summer and have had a few results. My favourite place was the tidal Thames from Teddington down to Chiswick. In the seventies we hooked a couple of monsters but the biggest netted was just over five pounds. This guy is a delight to watch and learn from. It's never too late to pick up new tips. It's a shame that eels are now classed as endangered, I believe that is down to elver fishing.

Fantastic film love it, whilst being primarily a carp angler I do love catching eels, they are so intriguing and secretive. Probably one of the highlights of my angling life was the capture of a 7.14 last year from Cheshire truly a fish of a life time. I’d love to see more films like this on eels and other species well done

Many years ago fishing the Colne Valley pits for Tench with short rigs and an in-line feeder with maggots told me everything I needed to about lip hooking eels. Every bite was self hooked on the bottoms lip. A few pints of dead maggots a day or two before fishing was deadly, no more deep hooking or missed bites. Been trying ever since to spread the word . Good video.

I’ve always had a negative attitude to eels … like a lot of anglers…. They are slimy and they ruin your rigs as they twist and knot everything up … it was only when for some strange reason I just typed in specimen eel fishing on KZfaq and seen this video that made me realise that not everyone feels the same and made me Think why many people don’t like them including myself … watching this video has certainly made me see things in a different light. What an amazing video and what an amazing passion he has for this remarkable fish…… I salute you sir and thank you for making me think differently about this fish. I think if everyone watched this they would have a bit more care and understanding. They deserve it as they are probably one of the oldest fish around and nice to see that they are making a comeback. Absolutely brilliant. Well done 👍🏽🥰🎣😀

I remember seeing one in Windermere, when I was leaning over to pull the anchor up out of a gigantic bed of elodea canadensis one morning. I could only see a foot of it through a hole in the weeds and it was so huge it took me a few minutes to figure out what exactly it was, even though it was only a few feet down in gin clear water. It was a good three inches across its back! When it snaked off I could only guess at the length of it. That was over thirty years ago but there are some sights you never forget. I never told anyone at the time because I wouldn't want to be responsible for a creature that age ending up gut hooked.
