This week on 10MARC I am covering some of the many USB peripherals we can use on our Amiga computers. If you have a USB enabled Amiga, you can do more than just use a USB mouse, keyboard and flash drive. Join me as I experiment with a few interesting things we can do (or try to do) with USB on the Commodore Amiga.
Order a RapidRoad USB and/or X-Surf 100 right here:
www.icomp.de
You need to order a ZZ9000...

The Deneb was the finest Amiga USB card(and its predicessors Highway and Algor(pro) in my opinion, fast and reliable. Deneb was Zorro2 and zorro3 capable. The Thylacine is pretty bad being usb 1.1 and eats cpu in many cases. We need another production run of the Deneb. Also,the Deneb had a flashrom,and you could store the os3.9 rom(prevent the reboot) and the USB stack in it,so USB was available from boot time for floppy booting or HD.
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
I wish there were more options out there for USB. I have heard the Deneb was a good card for sure. I wonder who owns the rights to it now? Yes, the Thylacine is as slow as a turtle... But it had always been reliable.

I liked the joke. It is too true not to chuckle from the experience of plugging USBs in different machines. Because I stopped doing much hobby activity on the Amiga, other than regularly using the spreadsheet and the database, I never looked at getting a USB hub. I enjoyed your presentation, and learned a lot about what can and can't be done. When I was spending a lot of time on the Amigas, I made a parallel adapter cable, and used the program Parbench, (and one for the PC but I don't remember the name AmitoPC?) to connect the Amigas together, or to a PC. It worked, but I can't remember how fast it was. All my machines have 68030 or 68040 processors, and that helped. The fog is slowly lifting on some of the things I remember from my time spent on the Amiga between 1986 and 2000. I noticed you still use an A1000. I have one that I installed the Kwickstart ROM on, and it worked great until I purchased my first 2000. .

@@10MARC I have an 020 card in mine as well, and I also have a Lucas 030 board, but I bought the A2000 before I got around to building it. My only problem with the machine, is that I have somehow lost the enter key from the number pad on the keyboard. I know it is around somewhere, but I don't have much hope of finding it. I thought of the A1000 as a Cadillac, that was why I couldn't get rid of it. Plus, it has the names of all the designers engraved on the top cover. I spent the day today, getting the Duo Doc 280C running. I am keeping 2 Macs and selling the rest, so I can work on the Amigas. Regarding Amiga information, back then I subscribed to an Amiga mag called The Transactor, which had lots of hardware projects. I have the magazines and the disks somewhere.

The RapidRoad is certainly wonderful as long as you are careful with it. Make sure you use the grounding cable, and avoid hot swapping devices plugged into the unit itself and it might just survive. Lots of horror stories out there about people RapidRoads dying

Honestly, just the ability to use flash drives is worth the price of a Rapid Road alone. It's an amazing convenience, and my A1200 immediately felt about a decade newer after I installed mine. Haven't tried USB ethernet or audio devices yet, those could be fun to mess with!

Brilliant video Doug! I just do not know how you manage to cram this much high quality content and useful information into just 10 mins! It would seem impossible, and yet you can do it! I've also noticed you are becoming multilingual, very impressive! You nailed that "Zed" buddy, nailed it... 👌😂 Seriously though, this is a great episode 👍 I have a Rapid Road and it's honestly one of the best things I've done for my 1200 build. I also only became aware of them dying the other day, after Rob Cranley mentioned it... I need to sort out a hub ASAP! P.S. LOL'd pretty hard at the Bluetooth moment... USB scanners work fine, I use a Epson perfection 1200U on my a4000/Deneb. i think it was fxscan,fxpaint that supports it. If memory serves you can also use it with scantek,scanquix,betascan,etc. FxScan can export to a PDF and convert and change between formats as well as color correction etc. scsi scanners also work excellent, hp scanners are usually cheap. i have a hp,mustek and agfa that works absolutely fine. lots of drivers on aminet. I have a rapidroad on my A1200 and want to report that USB Wacom tablets work perfectly if you want to draw like a pro in Dpaint. I also use it to connect a USB HD 1.44mb floppy disk drive for use with the PC Task emulator for reading and running my old MS-DOS disks. About the clicking bug in IBrowse, I remember a while back I experienced this issue and someone said to update my input.device which I seem to remember fixing the issue for me, but that was about 2 years ago and I have since replaced the ball mechanism in my original tank mouse with a laser and I use this instead since this will work in games.

As far as Webcams are concerned you probably need one that supports USB Video Class or UVC. It’s driverless and just works. It’s asically PnP. I have a Logitech C910 and C920. The C910 works on anything and is 720p. There IS a version of the C920 (1080p) that’s UVC, which I also have, but you have to find the correct revision so you don’t get the one that needs Logitech drivers for Windows. I doubt they make an Amiga driver. ;-)

I installed it in the early 2000s when I got it, haven’t got around to do much with it. Mice and keyboards don’t work on mine, but I bet it’s because of my old poseidon. Great video!

Great video! @10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast, a couple of questions if you don't mind? 1: I was under the impression that the ZZ9000 only provides "dumb" USB connectivity, i.e. that the card "bridges" flash drives to show up as "native" Amiga drives using an internal USB stack. Assuming that's correct, the ZZ9000 won't work with non-storage USB devices like network cards, sound cards, webcams et c. Does the ZZ9000 in fact feature a USB stack that is compatible with AmigaOS USB stacks like Poseidon? 2: Why "Zed Zed" 9000? AFAIK, the card is not British but European?
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
Correct in the USB. And from what I understand the USB does not work perfectly yet even for mass storage, but is improving. I am hoping it will become more compatible with future updates. I tease my U.K. friends a lot by calling the Spectrum the Zee Ex Spectrum... It is just the continuation of a little joke

Thanks Doug for your answer. I understand it. There is only one thing left. Before I break my Rapidroad, I wanted to find out more. Is it really true that you disconnect the internal power supply on the Rapidroad and instead use a hub that has its own power supply? Because I also have a monitor with a 4-fold hub on it, which I could then use for my Amiga. Ok, this is a very informative video and I have to say that there isn't that much information about what was once the most popular computer in the world. But here I find it.
@10MARC

Yes, disconnect the internal power and use a powered hub instead. I have friends who have broken two or three RapidRoads, and disconnecting internal power seems to help fix that issue.

i would not rename asix, i would copy it first, then rename the copy and work with that copy. so i keep the original asix available for the case i need a generic one again. instead of using camira for taking pictures, you could also use sgrab to capture that part of the screen where camera output is shown. it's a bit effortful (and the camera capture should not be moving, obviously :D) but it might serve as a solution/workaround. having support for usb-joystick would be a nice addition to whdload which loads/launches bootable games from workbench. this might actually work, i think! we just need someone to implement that! :D

@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
While I have not tried my Rapid Road in my A2000, I would guess that it will run at a reduced speed. Part of it sue to the lower bandwidth of the ZORRO-II bus compared to ZORRO-III on the A4000. I suspect the speed will be acceptable, though. Maybe 800 Kbs or a bit more.

I have an X-Surf100 & Rapid Road installed in my A2000 they work well and I can't say I have ever experienced a Lockup the A2000 has an A2630 Board with a Big RAM 112mb card connected with all the crap inside that A2000 I think it has like 120mb of RAM or something like that but still only 1gb of Chip. That's not to brag but to provide what's in the beast. I initially wanted USB to make my life easier to move files because I have yet to setup an SMB to share files over the network but I will get to it. Basically I have a Card Reader and DVD Drive and I use to have a USB Hub connected to it as well but I don't see it so I must of put it in a safe place which will require tearing the house apart just to find it. I also have an X-Surf100 and Rapid Roads for my A4000/040 but I pulled the daughter board out to recap it and I want to recap the A4000 and its CPU Board so when I get that done I will put that beast together and put the cards back in it. Thing about the XSurf100 and Rapid Road cards is its a bit expensive but so too is most stuff we plug into our Amiga's but if the price is not an issue they are well worth the investment. I have way too many Amiga's and lately I have either been repairing or future proofing them for the next 30 yrs and now I have a naked A500++ Board which needs to be populated and that puppy is going to cost me an arm and a leg but all my Amiga's have cost me a fair share of arms and legs over the years.

@stephenbruce8320

@@10MARC Yea sometimes faster is not always better. FYI: When I got my A2630 someone sped up the processor from 25 to 28 or 29 mhz by changing the Oscillator Crystal and when I added my Big RAM it did not work. Always something I said to myself so I started reading everything I could find as to the reason why and found a post by Jens about the A2630 needing to run at 25mhz so I changed the Oscillator and bang it worked. One thing about Individual Products is that there is a ton of information about them and the problems others have run into with them which can take quit sometime to sort through but its there. As I recall Amiga's don't manage the RAM very well so if you start running short on RAM Amiga's just don't care until it runs out.

Good stuff Doug. Very useful! BTW, I use a wireless USB Gamepad on my Amiga's (also works on my Atari XEG and C64). Little device came out earlier in the year called the USB Imperium (spinpoint.org/imperium/). These plug into the joystick/mouse ports. I grabbed a couple of these bad boys and have had good luck with them. Also work with a wireless mouse, and does NOT require you to boot anything or do anything special. You plug those in and they work. I did a video awhile back on them (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOZl8x1uNG-qWw.html). The guy making them is a real nice fella too.
