Nice overview Doug! Very interesting comparison of what's available. And it felt like it was only 10 minutes long really, no worries. ;) Also, I have to check the PAL composite signal from my A1000 now. I wonder if it is as good as your NTSC signal. Personally, I basically copied Mr Kola's setup 1:1 after seeing his Twitch when I started streaming myself. The OSSC and RetroTink2X cover almost all inputs I could ever want for my retro computers. And best of all, they both have so little lag that playing games feels very close to playing on a CRT.

They really are good quality products. The European A1000's tend to be newer and only have one board, not the two boards our NTSC models have. I would be curious if they used a lower quality Composite output, too.

I’ve actually found that scart to HDMI box excellent with good colours (not too bright or indeed washed out) and with a good RGB to scart cable the picture quality is great with no snow. I recently picked up ostensibly the same box here in japan but with rca input rather than scart and it’s another good one! Also no perceptible lag using these boxes I’ve been able to play RType etc all fine via these. Another great video 36 minute 57 seconds Amiga Retro cast!

Great video, thanks! I used to have a simple SCART-RGB cable which connected to my TV, and it gave a very good picture. When I upgraded to OSSC, I noticed 3 things: 1. The screen is even sharper than the already great screen that SCART-RGB gives. 2. The delay between changing screen modes is now noticeable, but that is the fault of the TV not being able to sync quickly enough. When capturing the image with a capture card and looking at OBS, there is no delay. So depending on TV, there is or is not a delay when changing screen modes. 3. Interlaced screen modes have a noticeable flickering when using the built-in deinterlacer of OSSC. The deinterlacer can be disabled in order to use the deinterlacer of the display. In my case, OBS shows a perfect deinterlaced picture, but my TV cannot handle it, it has no picture whatsoever. Thus, I just need to get used to the flickering in interlaced screen modes when using OSSC :( Overall, for gaming and streaming it's easy to recommend OSSC, but if you use interlaced screen modes very much, you are going to get headaches.
@10MARC

Very nice! I use interlaced screens all the time. My RetroTink 2 handles them pretty well. I can imagine with game capturing it would not matter as much, but I also change screen modes fairly frequently running different programs.

Great video! Because I also stream Amiga on occasion, I have an RGB->SCART cable running into a scart distributor. One output of the distributor goes to an RGB->Component converter that goes to a CRT, the other output of the distributor goes to a scaler (the cheap one you show, not one of Kola's fancy ones), which then goes to the capture card. I'd love to get an OSSC of any kind at some point, but that's all pretty decent actually, and I'm looking at the CRT, so my view is amazing ;)

One fun thing you can try for a project which I have done and it's quite amusing: Get a downscaler which takes HDMI as input and outputs s-video/composite (s-video looks much nicer) and then hook that up to a 1084 monitor. For s-video you can get a splitter to change it to 2 luma/chroma leads to connect to your 1084. Be sure to push the button to switch from composite mode to luma/chroma. You can use your 1084 as a secondary monitor on any modern PC/Mac and it works very well! haha. I've even used it to watch Friends on Netflix (90s shows should only be watched on CRT) and even used it as a screen for my Nintendo Switch

Great break down again Doug. For reference I have the HD Converter that looks identical to yours, mine has been great for the last few years, but sometimes it does stop syncing and you have to switch between SCART/HDMI to force it to re-sync. Only a minor quibble considering that it cost me £12 back then. Still hoping that Jens comes out with the AGA MK3 that he mentioned back in Decemeber 2019 so that my A1200 can be brought up to the glory of the A500 (Has the Indivision ECS mk2 which is faultless).

I'll definitely have to check out that RGB to Component device. I decided to go with the GBS-8220 as my upscaler, and the video quality is marginal - even with the copper tape on the bottom there's still a ton of noise. It might be due to the old, cheapo Samsung SyncMaster 710MP LCD TV/monitor I'm using for my display, though. I do like that the monitor has a composite input so I can use the DCTV box and it doesn't drive my eyeballs nuts from interlace flicker.

Very informative video as always Doug! I use a RGB scart cable to a Scart -> HDMI converter to capture and stream from my Amiga 500, C64 and other retro consoles. The image quality is satisfactory, but these cheaper converters do have a problem with smooth hardware scrolling because they interpret the signal wrong and always try to deinterlace it even if it doesn't have to. The result is stuttering when the screen is scrolling and it turns some fast intentional flickering (like say if you get hit and the sprite starts to flicker to show you're invurnerable for a limited time) into some kind of a mush instead. In the end though they get the job done and they are a cheap way into recording and streaming retro hardware, but for my future upgrade I'm saving money for a xRGB Mini Framemeister. It can take all type of videosignals like RGB, Component, S-Video and composite and upscale it into a fantastic flickerfixed and properly scrolling picture. The downside is that it is very expensive at several hundred dollars and it has pretty slow sync. So if you're using hardware that changes resolution a lot like doing productivity on an Amiga or playing on a Playstation 1 or Sega Saturn the screen will blank out for 3-5 seconds every single time it changes resolution which can be pretty annoying. I was thinking about going with an OSSC for my RGB stuff and Retrotink for my composite and S-video, but it would be just as expensive as just getting a second-hand Framemeister plus it would be more cable management and more clutter with several devices and I have very limited space.
@10MARC

I have heard the Framemeister is nice, but comes with its own set of compatibility issues. I have been so thrilled with the RetroTink in general, I usually don't need anything more.

Nice video! I personally already have a OSSC and it works great for all the retro computers I have. You do have to tweak some of the nitty gritty settings on it itself, for some systems to get the best out of it. Very often you'll find settings on a forum, and you just program them in. Once done though, you can save it as a profile, so your favourite settings are waiting for you, when you jump from machine to machine. Most of the machines I've used, including my 1200, worked fine from default. With the latest firmware, there's even OSD now, so you don't need to see the little screen as you play with settings. (The OSD can be turned off and on) I may get myself a Retrotink 2x Pro at some point though, for the few composite/SVHS devices I have. That does look interesting. One thing I'd like to add though is not all SCART is SCART RGB. Some just carry composite or SVHS (S-Video) or even Component. So you have to be very sure what the device / cable is actually carrying, because they're wired up differently. You also need to check which resistors (if any) are wired into the cable, because this can change the colour brightness a whole lot. The colours can be either too bright or too dim. So again with most things, either gain the knowledge on how to make a good one, or buy from a good well known seller. (I personally buy mine) Another thing I'd like to recommend is to invest in "Ferrite chokes". Either only buy cables with them in already, or buy some that you can fit yourself. I have them for some video cables and audio cables. They help clear up noise. For example, I sometimes get the same buzzing sound like you have on one part of the video. I cleared that up with a "ground loop noise isolator 3.5mm". Also, plug in your different devices to change signals etc, to the same power strip. This can help hide mains hum. For those that may be interested, I capture using a OSSC and a Elgator HD60S. The Elgato software can be a bit hit or miss sometimes, but most of the time, nothing that a Windows reset doesn't fix! I hope you take all that as some helpful tips for you and your subs, of what I've personally found actually helps to knock things up a grade. Again, nice one Doug!
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
Good advice for sure! I heard that darn buzzing noise. My new capture card has a voice over feature, but it recorded my voice way to low and I had to boost it. It worked OK except for that one area that there was a buzz. I often use those Ferrite beads, but I had not thought of adding them to some of my Amiga cables. Good plan. I get all my RGB to SCART fro amigastore.eu, so I think they are good ones

I use an RGB to SCART cable from my A1200, and then a SCART to HDMI converter that looks identical to the one you showed. Usually the quality it outputs has been absolutely fine, except a small bit of distortion when clicking menus / moving Windows I think. However, currently I got some issue that I did not get time to look at yet. I migrated my A1200 to a Checkmate A1500 Plus case, and I also purchased a new RGB to SCART cable from Amigakit, which is very plastic like... where I think the RGB/Video plug on the Amiga side on the old cable was metal, and 23 pin I think, where the new one is a cut down 25 pin. Now, I changed the cable because from time to time I had the image disappear and come back within a couple of seconds (not good for gameplay), but the issue I mentioned I now have is that the image goes away much more often... like several times a minute.... So, what changed.... well RF shielding of the Amiga 1200 is of course gone, as it is now in the Desktop chassis, where it was not possible to keep the shielding. And the RGB to SCART cable was replaced..... So first thing I will do in the next days is to put back the old RGB to SCART cable and see if that fixes the issue.... Monitor is a BenQ XL2420T which natively support 15 KHz. So picture is absolutely fine, when it is there. :P
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
I will be honest and say I have heard the RGB>SCART cables from that vendor are not the best. I like a lot of there products, but maybe this time the quality slipped. Mine are OK quality, but I am going to put a ferrite core around them and see if it improves my image quality.
@amndk34
@amndk34 4 жыл бұрын
10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast I just replaced the RGB to SCART cable with the old one, and sure enough the issue got less, or well back to how it was before. At least the first impression I get is that it is not something else in the Amiga causing the worsening of the issue, but only the new cable. Now / Guessing the last part of the picture distortion and from time to time picture disappearing shortly, may be anything between the cable, the SCART converter and the LCD screen.

One thing worth noting is not all SCART to HDMI adapters use the RGB pins of SCART and only use the composite pins so you won't get as nice of an image. Also not all SCART cables have the internal wires connected to the RGB pins. Also RGB SCART cables dont always have the internal wire for CSYNC so the sync information is passed mixed with the green signal which causes video artifacts. Unsure if this is an issue for the Amiga a CSYNC SCART cable removed all the banding artifacts in the sky in sonic the hedgehog on the mega drive. So what people should learn from this is SCART has a lot of pins but the actual cable might not have those pins connected to anything to make the cable cheaper.

One thing I found with my SCART to HDMI adapter (that square metal box) is that it needs the blanking signal to activate the RGB input, if not it uses composite. I used a 1.5V battery to activate the blanking when using an old Commodore SCART for monitors. Modern SCART Amiga cables usually have the blanking connected. Another thing is I found this adapter is incompatible with some monitors or TVs. Normally with highend tv and monitors it works ok but it fail with cheappers models. Worked well with Samsung and LG and DELL but no picture with a 4K Thomson TV and an old 17" LCD Sun monitor. BTW a new Gonbes with HDMI output is on mail... will see. Edit: I'm in a PAL country

Hey Doug, love the channel. Just a quick note to say that while your audio is very warm and clear, there is some audio static in this video which seems to happen when you move. I assume it's something with a lapel mic. It sounds very high and scratchy like electrical static from a dirty connector rather than the white noise of your collar brushing the mic itself. It's not terribly disruptive I suppose but I thought I'd let you know. Other than that your audio is super clear.

I noticed that with my lapel mic only when I had all those cables around my neck at the end. During the video on my Voiceovers I think my handheld mic was being a jerk. Probably me moving the mouse around and launching programs while holding a mic did not help! I tried my lapel mic with my new capture device but it was way too quiet and I could not hear anything. More experimenting is needed with my new capture box. Maybe I should just hook my mixer up to it.

Was there more than 1 version of Zoom for the Amiga? The one I own (on the same compilation disk that I had as a child) looks and sounds different than this one
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
Yes there was. My version used a song that they did not bother to get a license for, I believe, and they were forced to release a different version with different music. They changed a few other things as well. The lesson here? Don't steal Rick James "Superfreak" or he will get Super Freaky on you... 😂😂🤣🤣

Haha interesting. The graphics, especially the right hand side UI looks very different than my one. The hero blob character looks a bit different too

@@sacredbanana I have that version, too. It comes with Amiga Forever when you buy it. I was so used to my version, though. I thought the other one was odd. I keep meaning to try that version on my real Amiga's. The hi scores you see on the screen sometimes on my video are my real hi scores from 1988! I have yet to get back on the hi score table now.

@@10MARC I should check the high scores of my disk. maybe I have old scores saved on there too unles ive had the write protect tab enabled on this disk this whole time which was generally a good idea to protect against viruses. Hey you totes should cover Amiga viruses in an episode and maybe download some and show them to us. No better time to do that than in a real pandemic

There is a big difference when using scart on the 500 vs on the 1200. The 500 looks rock solid beautiful but the difference on my 1200 with the same resolution looks oddly washed out and not as rock solid.
@10MARC

My RGB on both of my A500's is weak with almost any device. My SCART>HDMI gives me lots of snow, and even my RGB>VGA connector has weird graphics issues on both my A500's. It is OK with the RGB>Component and when hooked right up to my 1084S monitor. My A1000 on the other hand is rock solid with all the solutions.

Actually this is true, the 1200 has an off the shelf video DAC compared to older Amigas and the colours are just, well, misty (ok...bad) compared to the older Amigas with the old Commodore video hybrid.
@vix_in_japan
@vix_in_japan 4 жыл бұрын
And I have proved this through video capture, the 1200's colours just don't reach the same saturation points pixel for pixel on the same image, same pixel, same capture device when evaluated in Photoshop on a modern system. It's all to do with the off the shelf DAC Commodore used to get AGA out on to the shelves in late 1992. The A4000 and CD32 are the same.

Not sure if Mr. Kola will see the question here. You may want to try his Twitch channel, he is quite active on there.

@@10MARC Ok, on reflection (research lol) I now take that back slightly... The cheaper TVs tend to have them still, the premium one's from LG and Samsung, not so much now but it's definitely common in the UK

Showing Mr. Kola is a shame. This guy is a runsacker. He shouldn't say that he belongs to the Amiga community. We deserve better.
