After drooling over the famed Ruger M77 in a Petersen’s Magazine as a 12 year old boy, Rick just couldn’t help himself and begged his dad to get one as his first deer rifle. After 16 years, he still breaks it out every season to fill the freezer. We got 10 minutes with him to chat about this rifle’s story, why Rick chose one chambered in God’s cartridge of .270 Win (The answer involves an old computer game), and how he’s modified its sight mounting system with a Weigatinny rail and precision matched rings to squeeze a little more reliability and accuracy out of it. What was your first hunting rifle? Is it still in your rotation or still your primary go-to rifle today? We’d love to hear about it!

My Dad bought me my M77 in .270 in 1984. Lots of success with elk, deer and antelope over 20 years in CO. Put a new scope on it a few years ago and tagged out a good antelope on public land with my Dad. Awesome all around.

In 1979, I bought a Ruger M77 RS in 7mmRemMag. It has been cherished since the day that I bought it. I hunted many times with. It still looks factory fresh. Then, a few years ago, I found its big brother. The new to me, M77 RS, was made in the early 1970s. This one is chambered in .338 Magnum . Both rifles look like they are brand new. The RS version was only made for a few years.

I have the exact rifle only it's left handed. I was 19 and wanted to by my first deer rifle( Had always used one of dad's before). Walked into Jay's Sporting Goods in clare and the gun was on clearance(probably because it was a lefty). Since it was a lefty(which I needed) and on sale (which I wanted) I really didn't care what caliber it was as long as it was a suitable deer caliber. Shot the biggest buck I have ever seen in the wild this deer season with it. Love that Gun, my wife is jealous.

@@fishinforfun3359 Thirty-five years ago, after saving up I bought my first new rifle. I had a third or forth hand inexpensive Interarms in.270 and wanted something with more oomph. So I got a beautiful .300 Win Mag made by Krico (a West German company, now defunct) and had the gun shop mount a 3-9 scope. At the range I couldn't get the thing dialed in. Shots were all over the place. At first, I simply thought I had purchased a lemon but later realized that perhaps it was the scope. I took it off and found one base was loose. The guy at the shop who should have known better did a piss poor job with the mounting. I took off the bases and started over myself, applying a touch of Gun-Tite to the screws and tightening firmly. (Back then, I didn't know about torque-screwdrivers). It was then a tack driver. My best group ever is a one-half inch marvel at 200 yards, witnessed. That's quarter of minute accuracy. So, not my fault but yes, it was the scope mounting. And I fixed it.

Heck! I’m 40 and I love the build of the Ruger 77 and Winchester model 70 each. They are classic, reliable, and balanced very well for a 1 rifle do-it-all from bear to pronghorn 😉 love that 270 Winchester cartridge. After awhile you get tired of buying rifles and trading because the build isn’t quite right. The Ruger 77 & Winchester model 70 achieve this. If your lightweight, compromise in your pack hauling weight...not in your rifle. Quality builds do have some weight to them....just my experience. Thanks for sharing Vortex! Love your optics 😃👍🏻

I've shot multiple boxes of .270 150 grains in a day at the range. Maybe if you have something like Kimber Mountain Ascent, one of those sub 5 pound guns it'll be rough. But anything over 5 and a half and it's good. Unless you're talking about something like a .270 Weatherby.

@@GiantMeteor2024 Depends who you are, where you're hunting, and what you're hunting. Round here the longest shot I usually get on game is about 150 yards. At that point, the .270's flat shooting doesn't really give it an advantage. And under 400 yards, the .30-06 and .35 Whelen reign supreme. Also, just going by sales numbers plenty more .30-06 is sold than .270.

My first deer rifle was also an M77 in .270. No complaints. After about 10 years I sold it to get a different rifle with a composite stock for the often wet weather I hunt in. I later inherited an M77 in .243 with a composite stock. That .243 is my primary hunting rifle now. Using 95-100gr factory ammo it will shoot 1" with the loads it likes, and 4" with the loads it doesn't like.

Black Walnut, not 'hardwood' but great choice of rifle and cartridge. I used one for whitetail and mule deer here in the lower-48, then took it to Alaska when I lived there in the 1970s; took moose, black bear, caribou, Dall and Stone sheep. My friend also used his for grizzly and I've used mine for Rocky Mountain goat, antelope, and bighorn sheep in Colorado, but only recently 'rediscovered' my 270s with the 145 gr Hornady and 129gr Barnes LRX. Love my 6.5s and 300s, but for weight, balance, and performance, its really hard to beat the tried and true 270 Win. And, in the days of COVID, you can even find ammo for one!

I could help play a part in MY first rifle for them :) That out of the way.. my first deer rifle wasn't truly a rifle. It happened to be a H&R single shot 20 gauge. Didn't harvest any deer with it.. but small game was easier. I still have it and I will pass it down one day. However.. it will not be even considered a deer rifle! I eventually did harvest my first deer. It was a pretty symmetrical basket racked eight point. Which is mounted on my wall. I borrowed my brother's Enfield for that deer. Which was nice and I wish I had his firearm from that day in my collection :)

I bought my M77 Ruger 270 in 1973. It is my rifle of choice. I load my own ammunition and have learned my rifle does not like boatail bullets. I cannot get a decent group no matter how meticulous I am making the cartridges or which top quality bullets I try. I aquired another 270 BSA. It is an older rifle than the Ruger, probably by twenty years and with a 24" barrel. It shoots these same boatail cartridges just fine with impressive tight groups less than an inch. My Ruger shoots flat base bullets accurately enough but I would not refer to it as a Tack Driver.

My dad promised us boys if we got 36 merit badges he’d get us a deer rifle. My brother got a brand new marlin 30-30. I thought I would too. The day I came home with my 36th, my dad went up stairs to his gun room (dad had a gun room. How cool, right?) and walks down with this rifle I’d never seen before. Blue steel and walnut. He says, “that’s a 25-06. It will kill anything in North America.” He said it was a Sako, he’d bought in the early 70’s, but it was different from his others (he was a Sako guy) but that it would shoot. Turns out it’s actually a Tikka from before Sako bought them out with a custom 26” medium contour barrel. I didn’t know what a cool gun I had. Had an old 70’s red field 3x9 on it. Shot my first deer with it in 1997 at age 13. Since then it’s been responsible for quite a few Utah mulies, and an elk, (with a significant telescopic upgrade) although when I grew up I decided it was a little small for elk. But a 75 grain v max at 3600 FPS will spread a jackrabbit out over 20 acres...

I inherited my granddads m77. Took alot of deer with it.Dont know when he bought it but he was hunting with it during the 1970's! You can't buy it, I wouldn't trade it for any other rifle period. Although I have added a different rifle to my collection for everyday hunting (another 270) it is a deer slaying machine!I didn't want to chance damaging it in the field and will pass it on to my son one day!

270 all-around favorite for hunting, but whitetails its my Ruger m77 in 25-06. Most fun bolt gun is Rem 700 in 22-250. 7mm-08 is great too. That's my tikka lightweight loadout. But I'd rather use my Mathews than anything 😆

Those M77s will generally shoot just as good as most everything else which is 1MOA or better. Things that could be why one wont shoot good would include, action screws not torqued right, scope not mounted right/loose, ammo combination, trigger pull, and the shooter. If that stuff is all squared away and it wont shoot, something is wrong with the rifle.

I came into ownership of a rifle just like this not to long ago. I am not equipped to reload for .270 and doing so in this vast emptiness of firearms parts, ammunition, and firearms themselves would be expensive. I decided to re-barrel the rifle in 275 Rigby or 7x57 which I have a lot of components for. I just got it back from my smith with a 24 inch Shilen barrel, it is a really good grouper. I have heard stories by some of how the Rugers are not as accurate as some other rifles. Every Ruger I own is a good shooter. The Lipsey's Ruger #1 in .35 Whelen is extraordinary.

The gun I was named after, except the stainless version in 7mm, didn’t stop me from buying a 270,30-06,243,223 and another 7 mag in these rifles. Don’t plan on those being my last of these rifles either

I got the same gun. Mine has the same leoupold vx1 scope that I bought with it same day. Took it to Africa four years ago as my light rifle. Shoot 2 Antelope. 1 boar, 1 gazelle and an Impala. All except the boar was shot from a shooting stick. no rest.

Anybody else own a Winchester model 770 series? Only manufactured for a few years in the 70s i believe. Mines in 30-06 and its heavy, but reliable.. never met or heard of anybody with another one.. yet

How come all the M77s on Ruger's website all pistol cartridge's? They have only 22, 17, 357 mag and 44 mag. What's the difference between this and the Hawkeye?

I purchased the Weigand rail a handful of years ago, my 7mm rem mag destroyed an old nikon and at the time almost everything started going 30mm so I need new rings which were hard to find rugers in 30 at the time, so I went this route. Problem is even with "low" mounts the scope is high and forces me to raise my cheek off the stock (horrible with 7rem mag) and when I build up cheek risors it becomes so thick it's sloppy and my cheek weld is horrible feeling. I may try factory rings again now that 30's are more readily available. Anyone else run the weigand and notice what I'm talking about?

This is a mark 2, you can tell by the safety on the bolt shroud and the stainless bolt versus the tang safety and blued bolt on the M77.

Guy's dad buys him this gun for deer hunting 15 years ago. He probably had a $100 Bushnell 3-9 mounted directly to the receiver for all those years. He gets on a Vortex sponsored podcast and all of a sudden his long loved childhood dream shows up with a vortex scope and pic mount. Hmmm.

I don't know why I haven't come across this video before. I didn't hear if you said which version of the 77. Original with red recoil pad and tang safety, MkII or Hawkeye. I'm assuming one of the newer versions because of your age. I don't know in what years the newer versions were released. Mine is a 1974 with red pad and tang safety. Got it shortly after it was born. It has always show under one M.O.A. with my hand loads. H4831 behind 150 Hornady bullet around 2850 fps. Some of the early 77's were known to have accuracy problems because of crappy barrels supplied to them by a certain manufacturer. I assume mine has a Douglas barrel because those were supposed to be the good ones. There's too much emphasis on fancy scopes with BDC or turrets you have to adjust after looking at notes and/or using a range finder while your target is running away. Learn to sight in a rifle/cartridge combination for its maximum effective point blank range. The 150 grain Nosler Partition in a 270 Winchester at 2850 fps sighted dead on at 250 yards or just a little bit less than 3 inches high at 100 yards is less than 3.5" above the line of sight at 150 yards before it starts to fall from that apex. At 300 yards it is only 3.9" low with a velocity of 2283 fps and remaining energy of 1,736 ft lbs. Even at 350 yard it's still only a little over 9" low with over 1600 ft pounds remaining energy. That puts the maximum effective point blank range out to around 325 yards depending on the size of the kill zone of the critter you're shooting at. That's plenty good for deer, elk, caribou, moose etc. No need to adjust things. Just center the cross hairs of any good scope on the center of the kill zone. Jack O'Connor killed everything in North America, including Grizzlies, using this method with the 270 without the quality of bullets and scopes that we have today. Also, picking rifles from something on a video game instead of learning from someone who really knows something about shooting and hunting? OMG! It's no wonder we're losing our hunting traditions and we have so many with rifles they really don't know anything about and really don't know how to handle. 70 years old here. Been there, done that.b
