All gas no brakes, the high-stepping .240 Weatherby Mag. is classic Roy. This 6mm speedster has a lot to offer. But its performance comes at a cost. Do the negatives outweigh the positives? How does it compare to modern 6mm cartridges? Why isn’t it more popular? Mark Boardman and Ryan Muckenhirn take the 240 Weatherby Mag. head on in this cartridge talk all about the last cartridge designed by Roy Weatherby himself.

.257 Weatherby Magnum is a laser with bullet weights that are more substantial, will pole axe elk and down with ease. Benefits from tighter twist if you can get it. For today, I would just do .25 Sherman Short Tactical in a short action.

There is a bit of a cult following here in western Canada. If you own one you tend to love it. Squeeze the trigger, watch the deer fall, feel the very mild recoil. I love my Weatherby rifles and cartridges!

Gentleman, I just want to convey what an absolute auditory pleasure listening about such iconic calibers in history. I have never owned a Weatherby rifle, or a rifle chambered in a Weatherby caliber. I will be turning 50 years old this July and appreciate the ideation of passing a rifle of significance down to my sons one day. I believe one will be cambered in a .280 Ackley improved and the other in a Weatherby caliber. The thought of this warms my heart. Boys, your conversations and knowledge warms my heart. I'm a Registered nurse of 27 years and after a long 12 hour shift look forward to a Podcast of yours to unwind.

Ive had my .240 Wby MarkV paired with a Redfield Accutrac for over 30 years. The guys I hunt with call it the laser because of its flat trajectory and accuracy. I originally bought this gun for the reduced recoil due to some physical limitations. Absolutely love this gun.

I have the 240 Weatherby Mag made out of an old WWII mauser. I love it. Extremely fast and very low recoil. It was my wife's elk rifle. It's taken down every elk shot with it. 30 06 case makes it easy to run in mauser action with new 240 barrel replacement.

First of all I am a total WBY guy however the podcast you conducted on the 3006 vs 308 was totally awesome and a learning experience for me, thanks. I like the big bores however last year I decided to add to my collection and purchased the 240 (absolutely no regrets). My reloads with 100 gr interlocks shot 1/2 Moa. This gun shoots lights out with no noticeable recoil. While I Hunt with 30 calibers I do not know if I am ready to hunt with a 6mm yet, however what an accurate pleasant gun to shoot, this was absolutely a great WBY experience. I will add this comment I always hear this is an obscure caliber with little or no public interest. I don't know how that is possible just surf around for this caliber the selection is almost unlimited in the MK5 or Vanguard offerings, I cannot believe WBY would make so many guns in this caliber if they did not sell. You like camo guns last I purchased the Multi Cam for under 500 bucks unbelievable price for a great shooting and great looking gun. I delighted I added this to my WBY collection, Regards

I have wanted an episode on the 240 from you guys. I have dreamed of owning a 240, but have held off due to the fact that a few years back I found a phenomenal deal on a brand new 257 Weatherby and I have not been able to justify buying the 240. Yes the 257 Roy has a little more recoil, but I can get 3500+ fps with a Barnes 100g TTSX. My 243 Win pushes a 90g Nosler AB at 3120 fps and those two guns work for me. HOWEVER, I still have not been able to completely shake the 240 bug. I am going to be calling wolves in Idaho this fall and a 240 Weatherby would be a wolf slayer. Someday I will probably get one.
@blakebell6720

I can vouch you a 240 will in fact hammer wolves, long range coyotes and whitetail in idaho with a very underwhelming amount of recoil. Also I just bought a vanguard accugaurd to save money still shoots right at a half minute with weatherby select box ammo

I have a Mark V super ultra lightweight prototype in .240 wby. I live in California and this thing is perfect for the state. Wasn't my first choice in caliber, but I loved the gun and there was only one. The caliber has grown on me now, but it's very niche. I grew up using a 6mm Remington and a .257 Roberts. I have an affinity for smaller odd calibers. Its good if you like it.

Well, back before effective rangefinders were easily obtainable, we were too busy trying to cancel gravity to worry too much about wind drift. I didn't carry a Ranging 1000 to shoot out to 1000 yards; even partnered with a 220 Swift, its falloff in precision pretty much limited the package to about 500 yards.

My favourite rifle for a long time has been a 6mm-06. The big advantage over 25 caliber is the availability of bullets. A friend of mine who is a PH in Namibia and uses his with the 90 Scirocco and takes everything up to red hartebeest. Weatherby should offer a 6mm RPM.

I have a story..kinda long but worth the read. a few years ago I want to an estate sale. In the sea of lever actions up for grabs I noticed a LEFT handed weatherby mark V. I could tell it was an old one. It has a blued Leupold vx1 3-9x40 scope and had a some light rust/putting on it. I paid 800 dollars for it. As I am a left handed shooter and thought it was neat. Turns out that was the cheapest gun sold that day When I got home I noticed the barrel stamp was missing but was sold as a 300 wby mag. I wasn't sure so I did some research on the serial number. Turns out that serial batch was made in 1964 and only chambered in .240 mark 5 deluxe and made by jps in germany. That was the first time I ever heard of the cartridge. I sent it in to get cleaned up/checked. I was informed it had been re barreled in 300 wby mag. At the same time I sent the scope to Leupold and shared the story and looking to restore the scope to keep it period correct but they we not able to but sent me a brand new vx1 in return which I thought that was cool. Turns out the original owner was still living and not far from me. I was put in touch with him and he gave me the whole story! He shot the barrel out shooting at prairie dogs out west and decided he wanted rebarrelled in the 300 to chase elk. He tossed the original barrel but had 150 pieces of fired brass in the original boxes in 300 fired from that rifle and sent me home with it. The boxes are super old school looking . So now i pretty much have a brand new 1964 9 lug German made mark 5 that shoots 1" groups toped off with a Leupold vx5 hd and set up for long range. I love the thing.

🤔 It just depends upon who you are! But, the 240 Weatherby can't do anything that my 270 Winchester can do! Any animal smaller than what would be too much for what an 80 grain bullet can do and I have a 22lr for that (as do most other people)! 🤷‍♂️

😉 Yep and so does mine! That is why most people won't buy it either! So, if you're a gun company and you want to make money (Which is why most people are in business, now aren't they?) it is usually wise to stick with the most popular calibers, unless you can make something that is totally unique and that alot of people will want to buy (which is very hard to do)! 😯

A discussion on the 6.5-300 weatherby would be interesting. I remember Ryan being interested in it thinking that it would be based on the 257 weatherby case- what do you guys think about it now with it being on the 300 weatherby case and the ridiculous performance it has now?
