watching how you and your crew/father work I think one of the biggest time saving and labour saving devices to come along for the farmer is the ....cell phone ....anytime we used to communicate something we had to stop work and go find the other person which involved a lot of walking as we didn't have quads ...a lot of yelling and waving ...banging on silo walls etc

I agree with one of the other comments y’all could spread all of the last years silage on the floor from front to back. Then pack the new silage on top. I guess it would be a lot of extra work though. Such an awesome video as usual. Your whole family is so inspirational.

I don’t know if anybody does it anymore but there was a dairy near me that didn’t use plastic. They spread a lot of lime on the bunk the broadcast wheat on top. Then set up yard sprinklers across it to wet the surface. The wheat can up and grew in the top layer of silage. He fed everything wheat, roots and silage. The cows seemed to do well on it.

I was literally thinking "I wonder if you could have open ended bunkers so that you could feed from the opposite end in situations like this," and almost right away, you started talking about knocking the end out on that bunker, but you'd have a pond form because of the slope. It's like you were reading my mind in the future, from the past. 😂 In all seriousness though, I suppose that you could actually have open ended bunkers, but have it graded so the center is the high point and it slopes down to each end. That way it would prevent water from pooling up, and allow proper drainage. Are open ended bunkers a thing? I'm sure that someone has to have tried it at some point in history... 🤷♂️ Anyway, it was just a thought I had.
@NordicFarming2 жыл бұрын
We had open ended bunkers where I grew up, only ever fed from the one side though as it was closer to the conveyors for the mixer. Only did grass silage, too cold climate for corn to grow, would unload by driving over the pile. Not often where we had any left over but when we did, depending of how much it was and the condition, we would either put it under everything, store it by the conveyors for a couple of weeks until it ran out or if it was really bad shape just dump it into the heifer pasture to let them eat the good bits and trample the rest which had a fertilization effect.
@three6ohchris2 жыл бұрын
@@NordicFarming I kinda figured that having open ended bunkers was too easy of an idea to come up with for it to not already exist or be used. That's really cool, hearing how your family used them, thank you for sharing! I can totally see how you'd favor using one end over another though. It's always a matter of convenience. Would you have preferred have them walled on one end?
@NordicFarming2 жыл бұрын
@@three6ohchris Absolutely many advantages to having a walled end especially for leveling, never any budget to test it though. When the bunks were really full you'd have to back the loading wagon partly onto the pile or unload in front of it which was a pain as the one doing the leveling/compacting but being able to drive over the pile and just circling around the bunks when done is far faster than turning with a full loading wagon in a very tight space.
@three6ohchris2 жыл бұрын
@@NordicFarming I can definitely see how it would be more beneficial, like you pointed out, but as with anything you can find pros and cons for both. Honestly the only reason I thought it would be good was for this situation where they have silage remaining from their last harvest, but now they've got to wait until they go through everything in front of it before they can use it. I'm sure there's something that could done in order to make it accessable. Maybe hauling it out, then filling the bunker with the new silage before putting it back in last, so it's at the front and the first to go. But I'm no agronomist so I have no idea how that would impact the nutritional aspect or if it would cause it to go bad by introducing oxygen into it again. 🤷♂️
@NordicFarming2 жыл бұрын
@@three6ohchris Definitely no expert either and at the end of the day the farmers call to make. We did at one point move all the remaining silage and make a small freestanding bunk and covering it which resulted in very mixed results. Always a hard call to try something new especially when the health of the animals is on the line.
