Wow! You can run these amazing Linux commands on Cisco IOS? And without a Linux shell? Just run these directly on Classic Cisco IOS switches and routers! Use grep, man, head, tail, cat and many other Linux commands directly on Cisco IOS.
More information here: bit.ly/2kwMyYN
You don't need a linux shell or linux virtual machine to use these commands. You can use them directly in classic Cisco IOS!

Some great tips here, thanks. A little rusty on cisco (in the optical world these days), but on asr9ks utility egrep is great. Eg; (if I can recall the exact commend here) --- sh controller phy | utility egrep "Tx.*Rx" - A 5 --- This will filter only the lane powers for a qsfp+ controller, great to cut out the other noise when you just need light levels.

I'm sure it wasn't added due to time constraints, but one big benefit with Linux commands is you can use regular expressions now, not just basic patterns. RegEx could be a whole series of videos on their own though! You could see a bit of the benefit with the "." For a single character match in one example.
@codyroche7586
@codyroche7586 4 жыл бұрын
Example of the power of RegEx, you can get all lines with private addresses. The command silps in under the 255 character limit, but DOES tax the CPU: show run | grep "(10(\\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9]{2}|[0-9]{1,2})){3})|(172\\.(1[6-9]|2[0-9]|3[0-1])(\\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9]{2}|[0-9]{1,2})){2})|(192\\.168(\\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9]{2}|[0-9]{1,2})){2})"

I remember back in the days when I started my job as network administrator, that you can define aliases just as in *nix environment. It comes really handy when you are debugging something under the pressure when you can't remember the correct order of the words in command. Just an excerpt of a few aliases useful to me: alias exec bsa sh ip bgp all sum alias exec bs sh ip bgp sum alias exec tm terminal monitor alias exec si show interface description alias exec sri show run int alias exec cpu sh proc cpu sorted 5min alias exec s sh run alias exec c conf t alias exec sir sh ip route alias exec cc clear counters

Nice video David Bombal. Just want to find out about the "shell processing full" command. How would this command affect the CPU and/or memory of the device itself? Thinking of a situation whereby enabling the command may trigger a spike in CPU/memory of the device to a point that may warrant an administrator to initiate a restart. Just a thought.
@DanielSlipshod
@DanielSlipshod 4 жыл бұрын
That is really cool, I have never really like the include command in the show | include, I will play with this. Does one need to turn off shell processing full when your done with the device?
@davidbombal
@davidbombal 4 жыл бұрын
You can enable this in just the terminal, or globally. From the documentation: Users have options to enable and disable Cisco IOS.sh environment in a given terminal. To enable shell processing on the terminal and to enable trace enter the following: Router> enable Router# terminal shell Router# terminal shell trace To disable shell processing on the terminal enter the following: Router# terminal no shell When you disable the shell environment, it does not destroy anything. Configuration Option Users have options to enable and disable the Cisco IOS.sh environment in the global configuration mode using the shell processing full command. This is the recommended option. The shell processing command without the full keyword enables the default behavior of Cisco IOS.sh to be avialble. But to enable shell processing and access all its functions, use the shell processing full command.

@Firstname_Surname
@Firstname_Surname 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the Cisco IOS version, older versions only support include/exclude/beg etc. By the way, don't understand why this is a novelty when you can simply press the TAB twice and see all available commands. Anyway, thanks for the video. Always good to relearn!

Thank for the feedback. I like the saying "it's easy when you know how". I also like "the more you know, the more you realize how little you know" which I have found true over the years. Lots of people watching these videos are new to networking / Cisco networking so don't know all options and thus detailed explanations. / + - are also not well known / documented.

You're wrong that | include only works on one match. You can do show interface | include escription|error|rate and find multiple things. Grep and the ability to exclude is definitely cool though!
