I’ve had my 06’ XK for two years now and it has been ultra reliable. Other than two services costing around £650 in total and a main battery (the only time the car let me down) I have had no other running expenses. I’ve had numerous Jags over the years, around eight in total, but this car is my absolute favorite. Definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Economy is fair around town (18 to 20mpg) and I’ve had up to 32mpg on longer trips, which is excellent. I have voluntarily done some jobs that weren’t actually needed: New rear tyres to match the front Pirellis (it had Dunlops on when I bought it), A newer set of factory alloys to freshen up the appearance and a 20mm Eibach lowering kit fitted. I’ve also decided to replace a few of the bushes. They were still ‘acceptable’ but as I’ve decided to keep this car forever, I wanted them done.

As a daily, these are hard to beat. I ran a 2006 XK for 18 months back in 2015 and loved every minute of it. The initial warranty from the second-hand dealer took care of a leaking air-con condenser and a back-up battery for the alarm, and £50o of my own money went into a service and new rear upper-arm suspension bushes. There were times I could see 35mpg on a run taking it easy (Shell Vpower 99). It was so good I stupidly got rid and bought an F-Type V6, and then an F-Type V8 AWD, both of which proved to be very unreliable by comparison and felt cheap inside compared to the XK. When I can no longer afford to run the current DB11 as retirement approaches I shall probably revisit the late model XK with the 5L engine as they're gorgeous cars and everything you say in the video including the awful touch screen. However, in some ways I would be hard pressed to choose on looks between the XK8 and XK but having driven both the XK is far superior to the XK8 and feels way more modern.

Jags are hidden gems ... I've had an XFS for the last 3 years ... stonking performance, also a swoopy Ian Callum design (albeit a saloon) ... comfy, fast, 4 doors so ideal for a Dadcar, big boot and over 3 years it's cost basic servicing and a set of tyres ...5.9secs to 60, 600NM of torque, 30-40 MPG ... you should maybe consider the XFS for your next Jaaaaag

I have owned my 4.2XKR for 4 years now. I drive it to work every day in all weathers and really is my daily driver. It's always in need of a wash in the winter as there is little point in trying to keep it clean in the winter. In those 4 years it has truly never let me down or not started. I have had a new battery ( of course on one of these ), a supercharger coolant pump that failed but didn't stop the car from driving and that's it from a reliability point of view. There are of course things that I have chosen to do and things that I am going to do. On short runs of 5 miles or so ( my work commute ) it always achieve 18+ mpg even if freezing conditions, 20+ in the summer. Any further when it has reached normal operating temperature mid to high 20s+ is easy. Yes I carry out my own service and repair work as I have the facilities, which obviously helps. I have spent very very little money on maintenance, my experience has so far been very impressive when it comes to reliability. Yes tyres are pricey for decent rubber but that's a small price to pay for a great car. I will not be selling mine any time soon.

Before Covid, on my daily commute I used to see a light blue 4.2 XK. Literally everyday; all weather, all times of the year the owner drove to work in their gorgeous XK and yes, it got dirty and grimy but the owner didn't just have the car as a Garage Queen; they drove it every day and I loved seeing it, because what better way to start a day than cruising along in your V8 Jag?. Thrown in a cup of tea or coffee for the journey and it sounds like perfection.

The Auto press loved this car when it came out. It was mostly aluminium, and the relatively light weight made it surprisingly nimble and capable. Autocar pit it against rivals like the Bangle 6-Series and Mercedes SL and it crushed them. Even agamst an Aston DB9, to which it is very closely related, it only just lost out. If you can find an XKR version, than the extra horsepower makes it an even more exciting option. They're definitely showing their age, and more a GT than a pure sports car, but still quite a good option, if the tiny rear seat fits your needs.

I have a 2007 XKR. It has been a solid performer, even at 133,000 miles. In two years and 14,000 miles of ownership I have had to replace three wheel speed sensors at £200 each. I have had to do lower control arms the first year for MOT and the rear bushings for MOT the second year roughly £500 each time. I have replaced the coils and plugs due to age (never been done) and falling gas mileage. I could have left them, but the performance was suffering a bit. The last bit was a failed seal on the steering rack that forced a new rack install. Got a rebuilt and did the whole thing for under £400. My only other complain is the fuel guage (like many of this vintage) is spotty. It's too expensive to replace, requiring a whole tank and both sensors. So in all, total cost of ownership based on NEEDED repairs, £2000. Now, initially that may seem like a lot, but the car cost me £11,500 due to the mileage. So for £13,500 I have an Iain McCallum designed, poor man's DB9! Oh, and it's been Viezu Tuned and now nets a whopping 486bhp while still getting 26mpg on the A9... Not at all bad! Listen to that supercharger scream!

I'm a huge jaguar fan and for the money that are terrific value for money, but as a dad car shouldn't a dad car be something that the whole family can fit in ,something that can transport at least 5 in comfort, have a huge boot and still have a little bit of punch for the weekend. I built such a car it was a 1988 ford sierra ghia estate but by the time I had finished with it it had well over 400 bhp and would go off the clock at 170 mph . F20YBT was its registration number Google the number to see the car . But now days I drive a volkswagan t6.1 204 dsg transporter from Van Haven. They make in my humble opinion the best dad cars going .luxury, space and style. Enough room for all the family two dogs and 5 bikes whats more to love 🤟

Great video, My Maserati Granturismo did 25mpg on a run, but now it seems stuck at 16mpg… you can cut that £4k maintenance by 75% if you do the work yourself and don’t do lots of miles. I know not everyone has the space, tools etc. but it is a relatively easy car to work on and google and forums provide the knowledge. I do like the Jag XK, but my Maserati was far cheaper than £7k! although I think I have now spent £7k including buying it.
@dadcars
@dadcars 3 ай бұрын
My logic has always been if a car is driven frequently it should behave better than one which is garaged and only does small miles each year… also the parts cost with Maseratis is the same if you do the work yourself or not so I’d be interested to calculate how much cheaper it is to DIY. I am jealous of those with the ability to DIY though 😉
@SailingSVPipedream
@SailingSVPipedream 3 ай бұрын
I think a lot of the cost with using specialists or (noooo….) main dealers are that they will replace the part rather than consider digging deeper. For example my parking brake was playing up and couple of people I talked to said replace the electric actuator at a cost of £1800. I took the drums apart, found the small metal actuator in the hub was seized so bit of emery paper and grease and it was all fixed for free. I suspect a lot of ‘broken’ stuff is changed needlessly on the road to finding the real and often cheap simple problem. Not sure how much I save in my struggle to fix stuff myself, but I would imagine it is in order of thousands a year. Certainly my Maserati would have cost thousands plus parts to fix over the last few weeks. In terms of ability - I am just too stupid to realise that I can’t do it, then by the time I start to realise that I am out my depth, I am already halfway through and past the point of no return! @@dadcars

Jag depreciation has always made slightly older ones super affordable but definitely worth picking up enthusiast / low owner examples with history to give some peace of mind. Poor pickle is so squished in the back but super surprised a seat can even fit in there like that! The Jag is of course more then 1/18th of the DBS. It was 1/4th or even less new. The thing is, that the Jag is so much older and so much more abused, that it is way cheaper. What would be a fair comparison: Try a 440i vs a DB11 (both used). The 440i is half the engine, same gearbox, some generation of infotainment and both now and new its 1/3 of the price but its 75% the car - atleast if it got the individual interior with the fancy leather dashboard. I've driven both and they get quite close. The Jag might also get close but the feeling is totally different. I'd rather compare the Jag to an S-Class Coupe, less sporty but more raw, less refined materials and design on both compared to the DB11/440i pairing. Of course you don't always need the expensive car to have more fun. If the MX5 had a little more engine and a little more sound, I guess you could have more fun in a 35.000€ car then you would have in a 250.000€ car - if Mazda would provide a flying Miata from factory, I would take this over a lot of the fancy sports cars.

A lot of car for the money - about the price of a fairly average Fiesta! From what I've read the 4.2 V8 was one of Jaguar's most reliable engines so its off to a good start and if you can do some of the basic servicing yourself I think it might not be break the bank to run although a contingency fund of some sort would probably be wise. Just the looks and sound of an XK would be enough to forgive it some of its irritations!

Yes they look great, but let's be honest, you can hardly give these big V8's away any more due to road tax and general running costs. There are loads of mint looking XKRs on Autotrader which have been there for months. You can almost feel the desperation of some owners as they slash another few thousand off in a bid to sell. Or simply SORN them and hope for some kind of pick up. I honestly can't see that happening.
