That the FA Cup final ‘showpiece’ was played on such a disgusting pitch was an utter disgrace. On the other hand, that both sets of players displayed so much skill, and produced such a great match in those conditions is truly remarkable!

But then again there was this rugby player called Ron 'Chopper' Harris...
@chelseacharger
@chelseacharger 4 жыл бұрын
@@wildbill6826 Thing is, Ron, despite his reputation, was a good footballer. He'd previously captained England at youth level and was also the youngest ever captain of a Cup Final team, three years before this. And in a 20 year plus playing career, he was never sent off in a league game. That seems amazing but he played in a era where they didn't hold back and it wasn't just defenders. That Leeds team could mix it and there were forwards like Joe Jordan, Bob Latchford, Ron Davies, Joe Royle who gave as good as they got. Ron could certainly dish it out but he was getting whacked too. The irony is that he was limping badly before extra-time in this match and was substituted. In the replay, the injury was aggravated in another challenge but he made it to the end. No complaints from him. Just got on with it.

I remember this game well. A real blood-and-thunder final. I went to the semi-final replay when we lost to Leeds at Burnden Park and Best missed a sitter from six yards out. We hated Leeds but there's no denying they were a bloody formidable team who never lay down. They had some terrible luck down the years, culminating in the robbery in Paris five years after this.

No diving, no wrestling in the box at corners, no trying to persuade the ref to book an opposing player, no multiple substitutions in the last couple of minutes to waste time, no enormous, athletic giants with no skill or ability, managers who sit on the bench rather than prancing up and down the touchline like spoiled children, just two teams doing their best to score more goals than their opponents. Watching this game shows you how far football has fallen since the creation of the Premier League.

Leeds' greatest ever side which played superb football yet they finished the 1969-70 season with nothing...one of football's biggest injustices

Leeds were cheats and thugs, the most hated team in Britain. They were a disgrace to football, it was great to see Chelsea kick the shit out of them AND beat them.

Interesting that you say that, as Ron 'Chopper' Harris boasted in his book that he made the biggest single contribution to Chelsea winning the replay when he crippled Eddie Gray.

Gray wasn't crippled, but Jones did crock Bonetti

Everton were well ahead of them in the league, Celtic were simply too good for them in the European cup, and Chelsea, even with Bonetti injured in the replay and Hudson missing, made sure they won nothing :) As befits such a dirty team

@@mizofan I suggest that you watch the whole of the 1970 final and the replay, and then have a rethink. Little point though, as you probably have a closed mind, clouded by hatred, third hand opinions and selective memory. Actually, I have edited this because I realise that I am wrong. You are actually a wind up merchant. Fair enough. I have just read your comments on the video of McCreadie's unpunished assault on Bremner, and they are actually much more balanced.

A show jumping competition had been held at Wembley a couple of weeks earlier and the horses had cut the pitch up a bit.

@@craiggerrard5117 ah! Thanks Craig. I couldn't figure it. In those days other pitches could be a tip, but not Wembley, which was always immaculate. For instance in the 1971 F A Cup final between Arsenal and Liverpool. But that explains it all. Bit surprising though that they allowed a show-jumping event there two weeks before the great showpiece?! Wonder if someone got a rollicking?!

@@martm216 They certainly never allowed it to happen again, so I expect that some Wembley official was given a bad time. The Wembley pitch was usually perfect because it wasn't used very often. As you say, it was great 12 months later for Arsenal v Liverpool.

@@craiggerrard5117 exactly. The Wembley pitch was kept for special occasions, internationals and cup finals, and not much else I guess? I'm sadly getting on in years now, but looking at the pitches they play on these days, I can scarcely believe my eyes. They look like billiards tables or bowling greens. I really don't know how they turn them out like that, week after week. New techniques of drainage and grass technology or something. I used to go and watch Southampton play at The Dell. What an amazing little stadium that was. The pitch might look all right for the first few matches, but then it would all cut up, and both penalty areas, and beyond, would look more like Bournemouth beach. Many other grounds weren't much better though. Some were worse. Was watching on here just yesterday a programme about Brian Clough. The pitch at the Baseball Ground was literally a mud heap. Not a blade of grass to be seen. You wondered how they could play on it. Probably wouldn't even be legal nowadays!

Leeds were hated, of course, because they had class. Jealousy. They were from the north, relatively new on the scene and successful; the London press hated them for it.
