A few of these false friends actually do have crossover, but only in certain senses. For example, realize your dreams=realizar los sueños, and you can introduce an element of something into a scenario. Of course these are less common uses of the English words, but I think it can be helpful in conceptualizing words in Spanish such as “realizar” and “introducir”. “attend” vs “atender” is a good one too. Re: the whole ser vs estar thing, you address the basics of the difference between the two, but I’d love to see you do a more advanced level video talking about the scenarios where it’s not so obvious, such as “la comida es buena” vs “la comida está buena” Great video! Saludos desde Nueva York.

Realize has the same meaning in English. Realize means to become aware of something but it also means to accomplish or fulfill something. Therefore it technically isn’t a false cognate
@torimac79
@torimac79 4 жыл бұрын
In English, these words almost all have many meanings that include the ones given in Spanish. But in the Spanish the meanings are much narrower, and do not include the most common (American) English usage. That would be why they are "false cognates". BUT "parientes" is almost the opposite of that! In Spanish it includes all relatives but in English it is only the direct parentage.

I want to learn enough to atLEAST make a conversation, but I am only good at reading and receiving Spanish, not speaking and remembering, so how do i fix that?
@SpanishandGo
@SpanishandGo 5 жыл бұрын
This is a very common "problem" when learning a language. I say "problem" (quote unquote) because it is completely normal. When you start learning a language you're in an input stage where your brain is only receiving the information. Kind of like a baby when they start learning their language. They can understand and point and do what you tell them to do, but thay can't speak it yet. Try to listen to as much Spanish as you can. If you enjoy reading in Spanish, do that too. If you like watching movies in Spanish, do it with Spanish subtitles. Eventually, your brain is ready to produce the language and you'll start speaking. Practice in your head, practice speaking whenever you have the chance, at least the basics you already know, but don't force it if you're not there yet. Listening and reading will take you farther than you may realize. You can do it!

One of the mistakes I kept making when I started was always accidentally using "todavía" to mean "today". They just sound so similar! 'Introduce' is a funny word in English, as it can also be used to express similar situations. Example: I will now introduce the solution into the wound... Or... I introduced a further two rats into the cage for breeding reasons. The complexities of language and expression are astounding :) You take it for granted. That's an interesting sentence. It actually works in a similar way. For example, I'm Argentinian and have been to Mexico for a long time, then I return to my country and speak with a strong (or even soft) mexican accent, people would tell me 'estás muy mexicano' as a way to say 'you're on mexican mode', 'you're behaving like (estar) a Mexican, but you aren't (not ser)'

May - there is a little correction I would like to make in this video ...for Point #8 ...Sentencia vs Sentence ...actually in English - the word 'sentence' has two meanings ...one is what we usually say 'a sentence' which is nothing but just combinations of words ...whose Spanish translation is 'oracion' ...but in English 'sentence' also means a punishment given by the court of law ...which is similar to 'sentencia' in Spanish. So may be we can mention both, if you feel the need like. But I don't know how you can go back and edit this video to add this part. Thanks again. I just thought of sharing it with you. Ooh, I should have asked you this question before. It's the use of the word GUSTAR. One teacher told me that you can use it to describe liking for things or ideas (Me gusta la musica, Me gusta mi perro), but not most people (Me gusta mi abuela) because the liking is "too strong" and may be interpreted as a romantic liking. Another Hispanic friend told me that using GUSTAR to like someone is perfectly fine (Me gusta mi amiga). So who is correct? Thanks!

Hola! "Gustar" is a tricky verb. But your teacher is right. You can like things and ideas, but if you want to say that you like a person you'd say "Me cae bien". I don't know if you can make it a rule, but it seems that ser is "satisfied" by a noun, estar by an adjective. In fact, the choice of verb can change the meaning of the following word from noun to adjective. Es pobre: he's a pauper. Esta pobre: he's broke. (you wouldn't really say that, but that's how it would come out.) Es enojado: he's a grouch. Esta enojado: he's angry That's a rule I made up for myself when I was in [U.S. public] high school (which I called "el colegio", but maybe "el liceo" is more correct, given what I now know. Sometimes I hear "escuela secondaria", too. The presenter's distinction might be regional, but she seems to be very careful, so I suspect her understanding that "el colegio" is a private situation may be universal. Glad I tuned in.)

Colegio is any private school. Is escuela public schools - elementary to high school?
@SpanishandGo
@SpanishandGo 5 жыл бұрын
At least in Mexico we have: Primaria = Elementary school Secundaria = Middle school Prepa / Preparatoria / Bachillerato = High school "Escuela" means just school here. You can say "Voy a la escuela todos los días" meaning "I go to school everyday" and it can refer to any school like dance school, cooking school, etc. So "escuela" is more like the building you go to when you're studying something. You can use "Escuelas Públicas" to refer to public schools or "Colegios" to refer to private schools.

Spanish and Go Thank you. I hear colegio a lot. Are most schools private in Latin America? Are public schools uncommon which is not true in the US?
@thekingofmoney2000
@thekingofmoney2000 4 жыл бұрын
@@motogriso1 It depends on the country. In many Spanish speaking countries, "colegio" just means school, either private or public, and "college" is "universidad'. It's interesting, because most English speaking countries do not use the word "college" to refer to a university, they only do that in the US. In the UK, where I live, they only use the word "university".
@motogriso1

thekingofmoney2000 Thanks for your reply. In the US college refers to a school where they offer BA, BS, Associate degrees (4 year, 2 year). University is where they offer post graduate degrees, like Masters and PhDs. The college I went to, where I got my bachelors degree in time starting offering post grad degrees and they changed their name to University. Not sure if the US DOE requires that, but I think so.

@@motogriso1 Yes, I know. “College” actually has another meaning in the UK - it’s where many students go for two years after completing compulsory schooling at 16 in order to prepare for exams to get into university. You can also take vocational courses at college. A four year "college" would still be called a university in the UK, or "uni" for short. haha. In most Spanish speaking countries, the way the word "colegio" is used, varies. In some countries it just means school, in others high school, and it seems that in Mexico, it refers to a private school.

Small correction: sentence and sentencia aren't necessarily false friends. Sentence has two definitions in English. One is a grammatical set of words as you referred to, but the other definition is of a court ruling or court judgement. In English you could say "the judge sentenced the man to 10 years in prison", or "the sentence of the criminal was unfairly harsh". So one definition of sentence would be a false friend, but the other definition wouldn't be.

Its weird because I’ve heard a lot of native speakers use colegio in reference to college. Possible double meaning or just incorrect? Another false cognate is molestar (to bother).
@SpanishandGo
@SpanishandGo 5 жыл бұрын
I can see that if the college they're talking about is a private one. It's not incorrect in that case. Also if they live in towns where "spanglish" is common. Like in California, Spanish-speakers living there use a lot of anglicisms. Same here in Puerto Rico. They switch between English and Spanish all the time. Yes! Molestar is a very common one, too. I'm gonna have to make a part 2 and include more of these! :p Thanks for watching! -May
