When a new Batman animated show was envisioned back in the late 90s, the Head of Programming at WB wanted a teenage version of the character. However, this posed a problem with the hero’s narrative and character as Bruce Wayne took the mantle of Batman only after he matured into an adult. So, the writers and designers came up with this revolutionary idea of placing Batman in a futuristic Gotham of 2039.
Wayne would transfer his cape and cowl to a teenager who would work under the supervision and tutelage of the old guard. Despite agreeing on this concept with the producers, Bruce Timm freaked out, partly because they wanted the show on air in less than a year. They all hustled to think of an effective storyline that retained the mythology fans knew of and held on to the continuity of other earlier Batman shows of the ’90s.

I love how they were given such a terrible concept- a “teenage batman,” but they took it and made it something new and cool that still respected the source material. At no point do you watch the show and think “that’s not Bruce,” or “they did Bruce dirty,” without feeling that the changes to him are justified. You never think “wow Terry is too good at this,” without there being some justification for Terry being as capable as he is. Also yeah, the villains do be banging.

"The Joker, the *real* Joker, was unlike any foe you've ever fought; and for your sake, I hope you never do." As much as I love Batman Beyond's own unique rogues' gallery, I love how they brought the Joker back; not only in a way that truly tested Terry to see if he was indeed worthy of the mantle of Batman, but doing so in such a dark way that Bruce and Barbara were scarred and traumatized for the rest of their lives, leaving old wounds that never healed. We view Joker from BTAS as a comedic prankster, but this allowed us to take a peek into the reason why Bruce viewed him as a psychopath and a monster. Throughout most of the movie, Terry didn't really view Joker as a threat, even when others warned him. So the look of horror on his face when Joker played the simulation of him raining down destruction on the city from the satellite was extremely satisfying. He was finally understanding how his own foes truly didn't hold a candle to the wanton destruction that the Joker would call a Tuesday.

It gave us an interesting continuation of Bruce Wayne's life and story even though they introduced a new young Batman. Would've liked to have seen more of the old school villains though. It was never shown in the series but according to Timm and company Harvey Dent/Two-Face eventually got cured of his insanity and moved away from Gotham to rebuild his life. It would've been great to see an episode where Terry got falsely framed for a crime (like he did in "Eyewitness") and have Bruce call Harvey as his lawyer. Oh well...

Nope. That the different royal flush gang. There’re so far 3 royal flush gang in DCAU. The first one was taken down by the Justice League, then the youngest gang members, Ace, used her power to manipulate people and turn them into her version of the royal flush gang. However, Ace’s power was getting out of control the more she using it which also killing her too. Amanda Waller gave Justice League a weapon to “properly “ kill her without causing any destructive backlash. Batman( Bruce Wayne) volunteer to “finish the job” but instead of using the weapon to kill the poor child, he sat with her to her last moment, convinced her to undo her power before she die. The royal flush gang in Batman Beyond is a completely different one from the one from justice league unlimited series.

Yeah I know it was supposed to an homage to/amalgamation of the "dark" Batman and the campy 60s Batman but I don't like my Batman stories to be campy. This show was so damn good. I want to watch all the episodes one day. I’m so glad I was 8 when this came out. That’s the perfect age to watch this as a kid. We didn’t even have cable at key moms house, and I didn’t even get to watch much tv anyways. I always had to do work om our orchard. So every other weekend when I went to my dads house I got to watch all the tv I wanted to and he had cable too.

To me, some of the most disturbing villains of this show, albeit one-off's were Robert Vance, a tech mogul that transferred his brain and consciousness into a computer and then when awoken by his grandson wanted to transfer his mind into a living body, his voice was super creepy. Then the splicer guy, Abel Cuvier in his final "chimera" form, the stuff of nightmares really. And as others have mentioned, the Earth Mover creature. One of the best shows I've ever seen and it's been such a delight growing up with it.

Spellbinder was a blend of Mad Hatter and Scarecrow. Inque was a new version of Clayface. The Terrific Trio was a DC version of the Fantastic Four. They were more victims than anything. Golem (Willie Watt) is a more kid friendly version of Carrie White. He was a victim turned villain.

Spellbinder actually seems like a mix of Scarecrow and Mad Hatter to me, since like Scarecrow he induces terrifying hallucinations, and Mad Hatter forced people to do his bidding in a similar way to Spellbinder (mind control). Inque is a great next-generation Clayface-type villain, and she was my favorite villain of the series. For some reason, I always wanted to see her reform, even though I knew that was not likely to happen. It's interesting how Magma's design resembles Clayface.

I'm a middle aged guy born in November in 1981 that graduated in 2000. Which means I grew up watching the great "Batman the Animated Series". I saw Batman Beyond for the 1st time on Netflix or Hulu in 2015 so not too long ago. I don't remember which but my son and I watched the whole series together and despite being an adult I got really into it. (Probably because we were also playing the Arkham Batman series at the time. Which if you haven't played any of the 4 games counting Arkham Origins that basically shows the beginning of the Joker and just a little over a year of Batman's run. You are missing out on hands down the best Batman games made and also tons of information and lore about Batman, his villains and their origins and the overall universe that DC it's characters and such reside in. However I thought it did Batman Justice and I told my son that even though most (Not All) the villain's were new and original with the exception of the New Riddler and the Joker gang which paid homage to the originals and at one point found a way to get the original into the episode with it making sense. This channel made a awesome comparison with Spellbinder and The Scarecrow. So that got my son and I thinking and we went and made a list and noticed that almost all of the new villains are just "new" and for the most part "improved" versions of the old villains from the late 1990s early 2000s. Great job by the creators. I don't know if it was intentional or not but either way I say awesome job. 😎

@DragonmanX90

One thing I never understood: Spellbinder created VR technology so realistic it even fools the senses. The "spells" he puts on people so air tight that no one questions the scenarios he puts them in until something snaps them out of it, or Spellbinder gets what he wants from them. Later on he upgrades his tech to the point where it basically reads minds and puts the target in a simulation so perfect that it creates a physiological dependency on it. My question is this: If Billings was able to create this kind of technology, why not patent and sell that to make all the legitimate wealth he could ever want? He seems to do his crimes due to resentment, revenge, and a desire for wealth; but you'd think he'd just quit and either make more money in the private sector with his tech, or as a child psychologist/psychiatrist. I mean, is the guy just that petty? Far as I know; any time he's caught he's sent to prison instead of an asylum ala Arkham, so he's not insane. Always wished the show or the comic would clear that up.
@ugan2
@ugan2 3 жыл бұрын
My guess is either no one would patent tech from a petty school teacher unless he somehow got Lex Luthor money and influence or they would screw him out of the money he would make by justifying it as not funding criminal activities. And that's on top of the PR nightmare and lawsuits from the parents of the kids he used that tech on. Frankly better question would be why didn't he just patent the stuff, get rich, and not resort to crime?
@DragonmanX90
@DragonmanX90 3 жыл бұрын
@@ugan2 Far as I know, the guy's PH.D is legitimate until he goes to jail the first time; so he'd have some level of legitimacy backing his pitch to sell the tech. I agree about going legit instead of going into crime; that's what I don't understand. The technology the man created is basically a superpower; sell it or partner up with a reputable tech company with him maintaining control over the inventions and he gets rich off the royalties alone, to say nothing of selling future inventions. Only thig I can think of is that he was going to pull a Batman Forever and use the money he stole originally to finance his own company like Nygma did with his "Box". That or he really is that petty or sadistic and cared more about revenge and ruining lives and the money is just a side benefit

This has me thinking about a fan fic I got planning. It's basically a combination of Blight and Magma, in the sense the guy had Blights powers but had Magma's dilemma. It's just set in a Fallout setting. Has to stay in a armored hazmat suit he customized for durability, mobility and combat effectiveness. Really likes using a plasma flamer, like grabbing a guy by the hair, putting the barrel in his mouth and melting a hole through the back of his head to hit the other raider slavers behind him. Also REALLY likes booby trapping dead bodies with mines and prerecorded holo tapes to lure enemies in for a nice big boom, then picking them off with a lever action rifle. The slaves are then set free and handed some food and purified water. Then he's off to go do something else heroic until it kills him. He genuinely wants to die but he can't turn his back on people, so he sees his immortality as an obligation to serve those in need. If he dies, he still gets what he wants, but if he does get killed, his body will react like a nuke and all that armor is just shrapnel, if it even matters at that point.
