Charlie Benante is one of metal's most respected drummers, from his 40-plus years in Anthrax to his recent gig behind the kit of the newly-reformed Pantera. The guy not only knows how to play, but he has a near-scientific understanding of what makes a rock and/or metal drummer exceptional. We asked him to pick who he considers the 11 greatest drummers of all time, and he traced a line from the Beatles to Metallica to Dimmu Borgir.
Watch his picks above and let us know some of your top drummers in the comments below!

I love Charlie but I don't think Vinnie would be very happy about it at all. He repeatedly dismissed the idea of a reunion without his brother and now with both of them gone, arguably the core of Pantera, it just feels wrong. If they were to market it as a tribute and go by a name which reflects that I think it would be far more respectful.

Charlie is not just a great drummer. He’s a great musician. He writes a lot of guitar riffs for Anthrax. Back in a 1993 interview for Guitar World, Scott (Ian) said that Charlie was better than both him and Dan (Spitz). He has nothing left to prove to me as a drummer but I want to hear more from him as a guitar player.

It makes perfect sense that Charlie likes drummers that add feeling to the music instead of just speed or intensity. I've always said that's where Charlie excels, he plays the perfect parts for the songs, not just speed or showing off. He understands what works as well as anyone ever has. I play guitar and Charlie is still one of my favorite metal heroes and there's only a handful of drummers on that list. Classy, professional, highly underrated, and one of the best music IQs ever.

I'm sure I will get laughed out of the comments section for this but the drummer for Def Leppard is quite literally the only one armed drummer I know who has been doing this for as long as he's been doing it. Love your observations about Ringo, you are so right on. And Rain, forget about it. From 1963 (I was 15) to 66 his drumming was on the radio 24/7. It was the most wonderful 'brainwashing' of drums and harmonies. I dreamed it at night. The thing I loved about Bonham was how perfectly he separated his right foot from his right hand. No matter if he was doing quads with his foot or counter rhythms with his right hand, the separation was perfect. The only other Rock drummer I ever heard who could equal that was Gary Driscoll, Ronnie Dio's drummer before Sabbath. The fastest foot I ever heard and saw. Separated accented 32nd notes. Nobody had more of an influence on my drumming than Gary. He could do things with one foot I couldn't do with double bass. And Keith was so syncopated in the 60s when drummers were into that syncopation. Keith, Mitch Mitchell, Ian, Clive Bunker, etc. When Jean Luc Ponty left Zappa and went solo, on every album he had a different great drummer.

Ian Paice and Cozy Powell and Lee Kerslake have old school feel for miles. They have everything that Vinny Appice doesn’t (and Vinny’s drumming vocabulary works perfectly for that kind of really measured ‘marching’ metal feel of so many Dio songs, I wouldn’t want it differently with all those machine-gun snare fills and the endless Ting Ting ride cymbal 1/4 notes, it’s his very own.)

Hell yes you're on my top 10 metal drummers list. Among the Living and Persistence of Time were amazing. S.O.D. Speak English or Die was a crossover game changer for a lot of us growing up in that period of time. I definitely remember your drumming made me take notice. Thank you for all the great music!

Hey Charlie! It's great to finally get to communicate w/ famous artists. I'm a 49y dude from Long Island NY, who grew up as a bassist, but later gravitated to drums. Thank you did your list, allow me to give you mine. This is in no particular order, and yes, you're on my list. These drummers are on this list not only for being my favorite but for being inspirational, making me wanna be a drummer in the first place 1) Robert Sweet-Stryper: his showmanship is 2nd to none. Before him, any double kick I heard were rare. During the song "You Know What You Do" it was the 1st timei ever heard anyone do a double kick fill in the chorus of a song. Blew my mind at the time, and it still does. 2) Mikkey Dee-King Diamond, Don Dokken, Motorhead Key songs: Black Horsemen, Invisible Guests 3) You-Anthrax; the 1st time I heard you on "Antisocial" my mind was blown, totally 4) Tommy Aldridge- Ozzy, Whitesnake, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iconic 5) Nick Menza- Megadeth 6) Cozy Powell-Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, 7) Nicole McBrain-Iron Maiden 8) Joey Scott-Lizzy Borden 9) Shawn Drover-Megadeth 10) Jimmy Dr Grasso-Megadeth, Ratt Thanks for listening P.S. Good luck on your new Panera your bro!

Great list of drummers. I like the inclusion of Ringo. One of his greatest strengths was that he was as steady as a metronome, no small feat. Two other rock drummers that I think would be worth including would be Ginger Baker known best from Cream and Yoshiki from X Japan. He ran a marathon on his double kicks.

Keith Moon was the lead/soloist instrument in The Who and Entwhistle and Townsend were the rhythm section which was made them so unique. Also Moon did wierd left lead double bass drum flams on songs hugely filling out what would otherwise be a basic 1 & 3 count with a single bass drum. It's unique and I've never really heard anyone else to that except maybe Alex Van Halen sometimes?

Love it! Brann Dailor had Lars Ranked 2. Charlie has him 11. These guys know what they're talking about! They have the Lars haters on strings, dancing! 🕺🤣😂 And they aren't the only drummers that love Lars! These drummers love Lars, too: - Mike Portnoy - Joey Jordison - Mario Duplantier - Brann Dailor - Charlie Benante - Dave Grohl - Taylor Hawkins - Travis Barker - Neil Peart - Bill Ward - Chuck Biscuits - Phil Rudd - Mikkey Dee - Dave Lombardo The list goes on! Not to mention the millions of fans that love Lars. And KZfaqrs that upload videos of them learning and playing Lars' drum beats. And other musicians other than drummers that love Lars! Nice to see people with credibility that know what they're talking about say how great Lars is! Too many haters on their couch with cookie crumbs on their belly talking shit!

It’s that Lars is terrible or anything and yes he was inventive early on ,we all agree. He’s just not a very skilled player, nothing personal a lot are not. Drummer Jeff Campatelli was asked to come in by a producer to work him on his skills That’s OK. Definitely very popular household name & he’s still out there doing it.
