Over the years, Joy Division have been one of the artists I've covered the most on my channel (some good, some bad!) and as I recently picked up a new Ibanez bass, I thought I'd have a go at demonstrating some of the guitar and bass riffs. No order of 'best' here, just some quality tunes.

Joy Division! This video accurately demonstrates how the bass is literally amd figuratively the biggest part of this band's sound. Don't hate: the guitar, drums and haunting vocals are stellar as well.

Totally agree. There’s definitely a melody in Peter Hook’s bass playing that is the driving force in their songs. Almost all the tracks for Joy Division open with the bass

Ian Curtis said he liked the chorus effect Peter Hook put on the bass because he could distinguish it. That’s a strength to Joy Division’s sound-each instrument had its separate place and pulled its own weight. Nothing bled in together. Everything was sparse and unique.

@@michaelcolt4196 the entire band. The whole band is based off the last minute and a half of “NDF”. Forget where I read it, but it’s fairly accurate.

@@steveFL450 Well yes, it does have some resemblance to songs like Stella was a diver or Obstacle 1, specially in the way they´re played but Interpol evolved into their own, of course the Joy Division influence is there

@@michaelcolt4196 yeah, you’re right. Don’t overthink it. It’s just a throwaway line from an article I read somewhere. I think of it like this: if you put that bit of “NDF” in a Petri dish in the NYC indie scene with all of its influences and let it develop you’d get Interpol and it’d go from there.

For anyone who hasn't seen it before there's an interesting documentary on Joy Division from 2007 which is currently on KZfaq. Might not be there for long though kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndORgtR9sda0ioU.html

Nice work. Ceremony is one of my fav things to play and Barney's guitar work is massively underrated. Great recording, and loving the bass work too.

Good stuff. Disorder will always be my favourite JD song, the contrast during the bridge where the bassline keeps that sense of urgency as the guitar just sets itself free and soars is pure perfection.
