Kim Young-ho is a South Korean foil fencer.In 1997 in South Africa, Kim became first Korean to win a medal in the World Fencing Championships with one of the most memorable performances. In the final, he met Sergei Golubitsky of Ukraine, at one point trailing 10-1. But Kim made nine consecutive points for a 10-10 stalemate. In the end, Kim lost the match to Golubitsky, 15-14, but it was the performance that put him on the radar of the global fencing community.In 1998 after competition, he underwent surgery for pneumothorax, when air leaks into the space between the lungs and chest. Just a week after his surgery, Kim entered the Taereung National Training Center. After finishing third at the 1999 Worlds, he won Fencing World Cups in Iran and Austria, as well as the 2000 Daewoo Grand Prix. After April 2000, he didn’t appear at international events in order to develop new techniques to use as a “secret weapon” in the Olympics. As a result, at 2000 Olympic Games, Kim took a revenge against Golubitsky with a 15-5 victory in the quarterfinals, then edged Dmitriy Shevchenko 15-14, and finally eventually defeated Ralf Bissdorf in the finals. Kim Young-ho became first Asian fencer to win Olympic gold. His impact to fencing development in Korea was immense.
