11 Nightmarish Modern Slasher Villains That Went Under The Radar - Explored

Who isn’t fond of the mask-wearing and machete-holding serial killers? The slasher sub-genre of horror was the rage before the nineties. The release of Wes Craven’s “Scream”, a satirical take on the slasher flicks, helped expose the tropes often overused in the genre. Post “Scream”, the slasher movies moved away from the mainstream. The 2000s witnessed the emergence of innovative slashers. It not only gave us a more sinister take on the classic villains like Leatherface and Michael Myers, but we also saw some original villains, trying to follow in their footsteps. The surge of multiple incarnations of Ghostface going after Sidney, not only highlighted the genre’s weaknesses but also invited a cynical outlook towards the slasher movies. The cynicism of the audience after Scream inspired the filmmakers to combat that outlook. We have prepared a list of underrated modern slasher villains who went under the radar in the twenty-first century. Without further ado, we’ll get into our discussion of the eleven modern slasher villains who deserve your attention.

It was a good film, and a brilliant short story... part of Clive Barker's 'Books Of Blood' - each story being very creative, dark, disgustingly graphic, and awesome!

Tucker and Dale vs evil, cabin in the woods, and you might be the killer are all better satires imo. Leslie mask is so lame, it's anti climatic and tries to hard.

I would say best derivative killer. He's basically goofy, southern Madman Mars. Same clothes, same scar, same hair and similar weapon. Hatchet franchise is beloved and amazing, nonetheless!

I know y'all JUST did a vid a week or two back BUT... I would've thrown BONE TOMAHAWK on this too lol! It's not a "Slasher" but any death (or violence in general) committed by the Trog-Dogs would fit right in any Slasher film... Well... BT's violence is actually even more grisly than the films on this list lol but y'all know what I mean! It's also a criminally underated movie too! Basically, what I'm trying to say is: Just find a way to throw Bone Tomahawk on any and every list that isn't negative... K? Thayyynks

Agreed! I watched it over the weekend! Some scenes would fit in other films, in fact you could draw comparisons. Nick's death, split in two from the crotch down (brutally grisly indeed, though I was impressed with its speed and effectiveness at gutting/boweling), mirrors ^^^^more^^^^ Jason Voorhies kill on the landing with the guy doing a handstand; machete to the crotch. Should be thankful he wasn't scalped first!! >XD I was left wondering whether the wife/Dr would have shared the fate of others and be killed and eaten, or whether she might have been forced in to becoming a new female, a blind, crippled breeder!? Definitely worth a watch*, you can't go wrong with Kurt Russell. *the new Wrong Turn WT like BoneTomahawk BT is more story driven than slasher premise driven, but is still equally brutal and grisly in parts!

I'm so tired of people saying Wes Craven's scream brought the slasher genre back it didn't, take it from someone that was there that seasons theater-going crowd in 95-96 had a few slasher movies Michael Myers even made a comeback also the satirical smart slasher movie like 94s the color of night even Children of the Corn 3, Candyman farewell to the flesh these were popular disguising themselves as thrillers and murder mysteries plus the Mindless slasher movie was only popular for teenagers and young adults in the mid-to-late 80s and somewhat the early 90s and sadly younger kids who wanted to be older and there were jems all throughout the 70s an early 80s so there is no popularity Resurgence of these types of movies they're just people who did them well and people who just did them & scream made its money at the time but it's not a cult classic now nor are it's terrible sequels there were of note also a few teen Centric killer slasher type movies peppered throughout the time. so please for the love of God stop saying Wes Cravens bad ridiculous movie brought it back don't get me wrong I love wes he started it all along with others besides he's one of the best he should be remembered for more than just scream as a matter of fact it makes me want to scream

But I, personally, thought it was a very good little homage to the old low budget indie slasher flicks. I think they made a good film with an intriguing villain and sharp practical effects with what they had in budget
