Sometimes people just want to downsize and declutter and live a more simple life after they have become overwhelmed with all the things they have accrued over time. But then there are other people who are just natural born minimalists. So here are my 11 signs that you might just be that, a natural minimalist.
i talk about:
- black friday
- stop shopping
- echo in room
- collectors
- netflix subscriptions
- library books
- time stress
- moving house
- getting a fresh start
- ebook readers
- getting a dog
- bullet journaling
- good reads
- scrivener
- childfreeness

Had to laugh at the kids one! I'm a natural born minimalist and when I had two kids the worst thing was having so much stuff in the beginning! The buggy, the car seat, the bla, the blub...basically the horror of too much stuff. I loved my kids growing up and being able to minimise our household again. It is literally breathing space for me.

I became minimalist after moving a lot and I realised that I have too many things that I don’t want and don’t need at all. Also it helps me manage my anxiety

Grew up with a mom who was happy to donate and teach us as kids to let go of whats already served its purpose, but learning to let go without replacing it with more stuff has been my journey in adulthood. I’ve scaled back, and the hardships that followed COVID has me even more selective in when and what I buy. I’m a happy work in progress :)

I would say yes to many of the things on your list except I love a few pieces of handmade artwork, I love the feeling of holding an actual book when I’m reading and I consider them a part of the decor. I also adore my cats, and I don’t consider them a lot of work. I’m designing a climbing gym for my cats that looks like modernist artwork… and it will be a quiet space for them to get away from household activities.

#12 - gifted items that are not on your wishlist. Not that I'm ungrateful for the thoughtfulness of gifting, but that I already have everything in its perfect place and the thought of another thing to disrupt that stresses me out

I never actually tried to be a minimalist but I often dislike having to buy new things and shopping overall (thrifting clothes being an exception). Also am not the best at recieving material gifts because I prefer carefully choosing things myself. A lot of the time though when I do get something I thought wasn't necessary I am really surprised and glad to own it. Totally on board withe the no kids poit as well :)

Totally comitted Maximalist here, although I am no longer a collector of anything. When we moved house 7-ish years ago I got rid of many collections and just never found anything interesting to replace them. The only two "collections" that remain are my library and my wardrobe, but even those are seriously scaled back....a one-in-one-out policy works well in these two areas.

I used to think i was a minimalist at heart with a maximalist aesthetic, but I’ve accepted that I’m just a maximalists haha. All my little things brings me joy! I am very purposeful about what I keep and do declutter a lot but im a very sentimental person with collector tendencies. Finishing a coin collection set or filling a bookcase is oh so satisfying and creating almost altar like intentional places that hold items from my travels or items that remind of beauty and luxury on my vanity is very natural to me.

I have a Maximalist decorating style, and I am actively working on getting better at keeping it tidy and not letting things grow outside of the space I have. I like to take inspiration from minimalism, but the idea of a room that ECHOES because of how empty it is gives me the willies.

I identified with many of these, except for my book collection. I am 5 months pregnant and the thought of buying maternity clothes and adding stuff to my closet that I will not be wearing long-term fills me with dread. I still wear some stretchy stuff I already owned, even though I look like a sausage in a too small casing. Guess I'll have to adapt more soon...

Funny enough most of these resonated full on. Minus the kids part. I have 4 kids. But when my oldest was born i instinctivelly set out for a non-consumerist approach to parenting. I barely bough anything. Every time i would enter a kids stuff store i would ask myself "how did my grandma and her 11 siblings survive without all of this stuff? A century ago" It became the best filter for baby shopping decisions. Learned A LOT of skils, that made parenting exponentially less overwhelming and even pushed me into starting my own business

the only thing I don't agree with is books. I give some away, I lend them and if they don't come back that's ok, i don't have attachement, but still, i read real books and i like having them around; My decor is books, plants and lights. I don't have any objets, statues or anything than those three. But like you, one thing that makes me so happy is when I get rid of stuffs. Emptying my appartement is such a delight !!!

Jenny said "neat and tidy home but huge book collection" I felt so called out. 😅 I was the messiest maximalist teenager. I was an arty kid, so I had a million paints, and scrap paper, pencils, magazines, and canvases. But now I'm totally stressed out by owning too much stuff. Especially after a big breakup in 2020 that had me moving 3 hours away with only what I could fit in my car. I had to choose what I could take and give up the rest (hint, I took 6 boxes of books, my clothes and not much else) now I don't even have a bed, just a mattress on the floor and I'm so much happier for it. I love my almost empty room. Though my house mate does have about 65 house plants but I'm okay with that. I can enjoy a beautifully decorated home, and then retreat to my empty room when I need to.

Was with you every step, until the dogs. We have 2, they’re poodles, so they don’t shed; their sleeping crates are hidden behind a custom built cupboard (closed during the day) & toys in a small toy basket. (although one of our dogs empties the basket & scatters the toys as soon as we put them away; he does this with his outside toys too; the other dog will only play with one inside toy & 1 outside toy, she’s the good one; ☺️) My weakness used to be books and the piles of books used to stress me out, but I solved that clutter immediately the first Kobo came on the market. We have plenty of empty drawers and cupboards and almost all of our surfaces are clear, unless in immediate use. Some people find our home too empty, we find it beautiful and calming.

natural born minimalist I guess, I never really thought of it that way. Hate black Friday. Don't collect things. I prefer clean counters, uncluttered spaces, and room to breathe and think. Stuff makes me nuts. I had three kids, but they grew up knowing if they were done playing, stuff gets put away! However, I can't give up my books, I love to read, and far prefer an actual book. And the part about contracts and obligations on my future time - YES!

Not for everyone though. I 100% believe that if someone is doubting whether they want kids or not - it's better not to have them. I'm not risking a chance of raising a kid with a thought of "I shouldn't have done it". Too many neglected kids with trauma in the world already.
