The art of life, Stoic Emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote to himself in Meditations, is “more like the wrestler’s art than the dancer’s.” It teaches you to “stand ready and firm to meet sudden and unexpected onsets.”

As Ryan Holiday explains in this video, the connection between sports and Stoicism is very clear. Any athlete will immediately see the parallels: “Stoicism as a philosophy is really about the mental game. It’s not a set of ethics or principles. It’s a collection of spiritual exercises designed to help people through the difficulty of life. To focus on managing emotion; specifically, non-helpful emotion.”
Here are 11 rules from Stoicism to help you become a better athlete today in order to win, be number one and conquer the heights of greatness.

I have been listening to this every time I go walking and running. Was really in shape when I was younger in the Army. Later got diagnosed with a lung autoimmune disease. Really jacked me up. Recently had shoulder surgery and decided I am going to do whatever it takes to get back in some form of shape. It has been agonizingly slow. But each day I feel a little stronger and can go a little further. Thanks for the continued motivation.

I started running after a year off. It was quite discouraging to see how my performance had suffered. I started to continually think that I'm "better than yesterday," and it keeps me motivated. It's easy to hold onto your past self...don't do that.

Why dont I always give my best? Because its mentally draining. If you try to give your best on anything and everything you will be mediocre when it counts, because you will be exhausted. Give your best where it counts, allow yourself to recover. Which doesnt mean be lazy. It means that consistency is more important than giving all you have and this consistency will give you the ability to be great when you actually need to be great
