James makes a good point. Hashbrowns made of shredded potato taste a bit different than fried potato made of little chunks, which both taste different to French fries. Each is fried, but there's a different ratio of fried surface area. It's also amazing how other ways of dealing with a potato can taste so different- baked, mashed, boiled...

The Midwest often gets ignored in the beauty department, but I tell you, as a farmer's daughter, nothing is more beautiful than the greenest green of a cornfield waving in the wind, or the bluest blue sky filled with fluffy clouds, or a quiet winter morning with unbroken snow sparkling like diamonds. Every state has its own beauty. My soul sings for the mountains, but I'm raising my family in the beautiful Midwest 😊

In the US we have a difference between hashbrowns, homefries (which may be close to what you refer to as yours). We also have simply "hash" which usually includes shaved/chopped corn beef, fried potatoes (obviously), and sometimes onions and/or saurkraut and/or grilled peppers.

To Milly's comment about Lawrence possibly unknowingly speaking with more of an American accent when around others speaking American English, that is more than possible. My parents once moved with my younger siblings from Florida, where native Floridians in most parts of the state don't have much of an accent, to Eastern Tennessee, where the accents are as thick as molasses. They moved back to Florida after a few months and my little sisters had already developed a bit of the Tennessee accent. If you lived here, Milly, you would likely convert fast.

The Square vs Circle pizza is because the two doughs are made with different ingredients. If they used the same dough, sauce, cheese and toppings then they would taste the same. That being said, texture on different shaped foods absolutely comes into play. If you serve me "mac and cheese" made with angel hair or spaghetti and say it's the same because they're both pasta I'm going to look at you like you're absolutely nuts.

Then you have breakfast potatoes or home fries depending on where you are, which are chopped and boiled, then fried with onion to a nice crispness. The American diner is truly amazing some have no less than 100 item on their menus. Everything from your fresh juices to salads to sandwiches to steaks or a menagerie of pies cakes and pastries. The eastern woodland of the US has to be experienced. The concept of endless expanses of tree growth that goes on ...for days and for weeks...had never occurred to me at a younger age. RE; pizza - square shaped/sliced pizza tends to be more of a pan pizza/thick crust style. The crust can also be a little sweeter. With round pizzas, sometimes depending on the style of pizza you order, the slices might be a little thinner. If you want your pizza to taste good ask for pan style pizza.

There is a mathematical foundation to his argument that pizza tastes different, whether it's square or circle. It comes down to the dough. Geometrically, a circle covers more surface area than a square, which means that in a square pizza, the crust of the pizza will be thicker and more fluffy, which will change the way it mixes with the other ingredients. It also means the overall pie will require less sauce, cheese, etc to achieve the same coverage. So, square pizza will have a thicker, more fluffy crust and less of the other ingredients.

If you're referring to the pizza, they do taste different. Round pizzas are basically air baked on a flat pan, but square pizzas are baked in a square pan with edges. The square pan has to be greased so you can get the pizza out of the pan, so you're also slightly "frying" the pizza in a small way. That totally changes the flavor profile. You can actually add more flavor as well by using bacon grease on the pan (like you do with cornbread).
@FEARNoMore
@FEARNoMore 10 ай бұрын
@@waynepurcell6058 No, if you take two equal sized balls of dough and shape one into a square and the other into a circle and place them on the SAME flat pan or the SAME square pan, there would be NO difference in taste. As the shape has no baring on taste in itself. I think James is confused with the two styles of pizzas which have different recipes, different dough consistencies and different flavors. A flat thin sliced pizza verses a pan pizza.
@kathysutton-zy8ww
@kathysutton-zy8ww 10 ай бұрын
Yes, square pizzas do taste different. My theory is: round pizzas are baked on a flat round pizza pan, and can easily be slidden off when done. Square pizzas are baked in a pan with sides. And the only way that pizza is coming out of the pan is if the bottom as well as the sides have been well oiled. That oil soaks into the crust as it’s baking, and gives it a unique flavor. Or I could be wrong-it happens occasionally. 😂

The best pan pizzas are made with olive oil in the dough and in the pan. The dough sets up in the pan for at least an hour if you want the most amazing, probably deadly, crispy, not crunchy, crust. I used to manage a pizza joint, My crew and I broke a dozen sales records in less than a year, so I might know what I am talking about.

Rectangle pizzas are called, “Detroit Style”. I’m originally from Michigan and Buddys pizza is a state treasure. The little old ladies that created the menus and this pizza are from Sicily originally. They hide the toppings underneath the beautiful tomato sauce/pizza sauce. The history of the auto industry includes Buddys pizza. How? You enquire well the steel pizza pans once were used to hold tiny pieces of the vehicles that were being either being built or repaired. The dough is twice baked. It’s extra crispy. Finally, the cheese is called “Brick Cheese” & it’s from Wisconsin. This type of cheese has less water in it. If you are ever in Michigan you most DEFINITELY need to go. Order the antipasto salad. Buddy’s house dressing is EPIC. Take care & blessings to you all. 😊

I couldn't answer her honestly so I said, baby I don't know lets Google it. Here is the kicker, we never Googled it. We just kept clicking next video. Anyways the reason why we love your videos is not actually because of the content, but because we see ourselves in your commodity with each other. My wife and I have known each other for 40 plus Years, and have been together for more than 20 years, we hope for many more. That is our wish for you 2. As a male I recognize that sparkle you have when looking into your significant other. My wife recognizes the body language, eye contact and skin flushing that the lady has for you. I hope you both the greatest happiness that can be shared between two people. If there isn't an American couple that responds to all the cool and amazing things British people do, the maybe we will give it a go. I just don't know if we can pull it off. We don't know how to edit or post videos to you tube and we don't rely believe anyone will be interested in it. We are in our 50s and not camera friendly at least not me. My wife is an angel and her beauty is unmatched. Me not so much. Perhaps we can do voice overs, but we don't have content about why British are so fascinating.

8:22, there's a Mel's Diner in my town, I wonder if it's that one. Looks just like it. Used to go there 50 years ago after the bars closed. They are still there today.

I would recommend making your first American road trip in an SUV instead of an RV if you're from the UK, Ireland, or anywhere else where you drive on the left hand side. Stay in hotels, lodges inside or close to our National Parks, or camp in tents. I'm sure you would get used to our roads and the huge RVs eventually but they most definitely do not drive or perform like cars, the sleeping arrangements might not be very comfortable, and pray you don't have to dump your sewage/wastewater. I'm not against this sort of trip but I'm very familiar with RVs, Winnebagos in particular, and just know it's not necessarily just get the keys and go.

OK I'll chime in on the shape of food debate. At least in NYC square pizza and round pizza are very different mostly due to the dough. But also pasta - it just seems pasta tastes different between ziti and the bowties and spaghetti, etc. I do believe they are made the same but taste different.

When I went to see Digweed in London at age 19. I hung out with so many random Europeans for two weeks, that once I got home, I had a effed up accent for like a month. I think I’d be more conscious of it as an adult though. I’d try to rock my incredible Maine accent.. I’d even add some extra to it🤣

Square pizza definitely tastes different than round pizza. I've always thought it was weird; how can shapes have tastes, but they do! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this, because it's true!

James is right about different sizes of things tasting differently. Consider pasta. As far as pizza, square (which us Americans call Sicilian) and round DEFINITELY taste different: The yeast/dough is often risen differently, they VERY often use a different sauce recipe, and sauce to cheese ratio differs. So in the case of pizza, it’s not about size and shape. They’re just made differently. If you go to a pizzeria that offers both types, they don’t just make the same thing in different shapes.

Yes he is correct about the hash browns and pizza. The pizza is because it’s a different kind of pizza round pizza is thin square is thick and they are cooked differently.

Square pizzas' proper 1's have a thicker crust that should be airy. Best square pizza (deep dish) I ever had was from a PaPa Ramones pizza in Michigan U.S. a nice, thick, airy crispy crust. So different dough different taste, different thicknesses of dough different taste. So you are correct they taste different, and the round and square from a pizza place will not have the same thickness of dough in both of them

Square pizza is going to taste differently, because (at least in the U.S.) it is usually a different pizza style, whether it is Detroit style, Tavern style in Chicago, etc., These styles use different crusts, different cheeses and different ingredients in the sauces. They do not taste differently, however, just because they are square. BTW/I love it when James low-key riffs on the un-exciting parts of the Midwest. Nice people there, but not stupendous scenery in most places.

Not so. Along the Mississippi river are some beautiful areas although the Wisconsin Dells area is incredible. So much ice age geography that it's a tourist destination. And don't forget the forrest's and the Great lakes. All areas of the US have scenic areas

That’s 💯 psychological associating shapes and taste. Texture can effect whether you like or dislike a food because of how it feels in your mouth. Square pizza and round pizza made with the same ingredients and cooked the same way will taste exactly the same.
