I’m from the U.K. living in Hamburg, here people are too busy looking at their phones to stare at anyone . I haven’t noticed the famous German stare anywhere in the north, perhaps it’s a southern thing.

Here in Berlin nobody stares at you either, I think it is a small town thing. I used to live in Schwäbisch Hall and it is true, the staring there is really annoying.

If you have a really annoying staring person just stare back at their socks. Maybe add an eyebrow raise. Works best in public transportation Will drive them nuts 😂

Since smoking is forbidden in bars and restaurants I consider the smell of smoke rather disgusting. None of my friends/colleagues/family smoke and I always feel upset when someone passes me with a cigarette (what doesn't happen as often as it used to).

Julia Claire For me it is normal to see other people smoking but the smoke still bothers me a lot even though I have relatives who smoke. In restaurants it is normally allowed to smoke when you’re sitting outside. This is really annoying because there you can’t go away from the smoke 😃

I always hated it. That's really a reason for me not to go to places where people smoke. It should be banned from everywhere. It was even hard for me to wait at the bus station, because everywhere they where smoking. It's even a reason I don't want to invite parts of my familiy. I just cannot breath or talk then, I always have to swallow, and after that everything smells bad, ugh. I cannot tell how much I hate it. xD Rauchen ist asozial.

It's not that bad... I worked at a bar once and our regulars were allowed to smoke. We just didn't "see" it Of course it's a small town bar, nobody cared. It was really fun to work there...

5:20 smoking won't stop bothering me. I am german, I am a non-smoker and I hate it when I come across someone smoking in public. Smokers are often not aware that the smoke is annoying even several meters away. I just don't like the smell.

i was shocked and angry when i experienced that people clustered around hospital entrances to smoke. i had bad bronchitis and it was really bothersome. i did complain to the receptionist and they just shrugged their shoulders and said that the smoking area was designated across the street , but they just could not get the smokers to go across the street. i had to go to several hospitals and it was the same where in order to get in a door i had to struggle through a throng of smokers to get in the door. that is just gross and wrong.

The staring is more of a thing in the South of Germany, I think. I live near Cologne and don't feel stared at very often. But when I travel to the South, I notice people staring a lot more. Or it might be about city life vs small town Germany.

I've never had a dryer and I don't think I could use one without feeling incredibly guilty for wasting that much power...it's been drilled into me since I was a young child that dryers are bad and unnecessary Also, re: the Germany stare - the best stares are the ones you receive from old people who sit at their window all day. I still don't know how to react to them. I usually smile and stare back but then they just make me feel like I am the one who is being weird and rude. idk man

In northern Europe (including Germany) dryers are an absolute must unless you enjoy mold. You can use a drying rack in the summer( so 14 days) but as soon as autumn comes, you have no chance to dry your clothes outside or in your house. They will start to smell or cause mold before they get dry.

Great video, true verdict for all points made. Some of those points are even worse in the UK. Like don’t speak or talk to people on the London Tube (Underground) I personally lost the starring to a large degree during my 20 odd years living in Canada and the UK. I remember 2 girls getting freaked out in Canada when we were having a party and a buddy of mine told me about it but I didn’t even starre at them I was just thinking about something completely different starring into the distance and didn’t even notice they were there. LOL

Hi Nalf, thanks again for another lovely video :-)) Because this topic shows up so often I'd like to give a short insight about the "staring business". To me as a German this is a really really weird thing to hear about. And all the people from the US mention it. So I thought about it and here is what I think about the “staring”: Yes, it is correct: we Germans do it ALL THE TIME with EVERYBODY at any given situation. But Germans would never call it "staring"! Usually it's meant to be the briefest of eye contact. Why do we do that? I always feel like it's a kind of silent Hello, a sign that we recognize each other as human beings, maybe telling each other by the brief eye-contact that I’m a friendly person who won’t harm you. The crazy thing is, if you look back and hold the eye contact, then - funny as it is - to Germans YOU would be the one who stares... (I’m not talking about the looks which say “take your feet off the seat!” Those are the “real stares”.) It's probably just a thing to get used to. I don't like it much to be "looked at" myself, therefore I just ignore it. Then it's kind of my own wonderful stage and everyone virtually cheers my lovely performance. ;-)))

I'm german, and I don't usually smile. But one day, I bought a big sewing machine and had to haul it home while still pushing my bike. It was a windy day and I have bangs so my hair kept getting into my eyes, but I my hands were full. So I had to squint my eyes for the entire half an hour walk home. And I realized, quite a couple people were smiling at me! I was pretty confused why people were doing that, until I realized that inadvertently, by squinting really hard, I was sporting a big grin! Felt really weird to be smiled at without appropriate reason, guess that's proof I'm german! Haha

When I lived in Germany in the early 90's and as a kid in the 70's it seemed like smoking was everywhere. Now when I go visit I have noticed the smoking is much more subdued then in the past.

I don't know why, but Europe is just 20 years behind US/Canada on smoking. Nalf isn't old enough to remember when it was everywhere in the US also. No one went outside to smoke anywhere. Restaurants and AIRPLANES didn't even have a smoking section - it was OK everywhere. Then smoking sections, then no smoking anywhere. German railway compartments always had Kein Rauchen compartments and others where it was OK (OMG!) though. The UK seems like US/UK or even more so, with stricter cigarette package rules with stronger anti-smoking messages. Now in the US because of high tobacco taxes in places like New York a pack is $13!

Hey Nalf, I would like to offer a few inside informations to a few of your points: point 3: in a hilly part of Germany, people usually use Electrical bikes to move around because it's practical and gives you a lot of boost while climbing a hill. point 5: a beer during the day serves as a refreshment, not as a mean to get drunk. That said, a lot of people get "a russian poet" kind of drunk on beer during festivals or wild nights out. So it's a kind of time of the day/week thing on how the beer is percieved. That said, most work places do not allow drinking beer during your work breaks. Point 9: we do not understand the point of garbage disposal because we recycle even the food scraps (Bio müll). Sometimes if you live in a windy city, you do not need a dryer. And air pollution is mostly pretty low, so the clothes getting dryed outside do not get stinky or discoloured. I design and sell Kitchens, people mostly want a Dishwasher... Point 11: staring means caring 😉 it's just that we try to understand and learn about you, the high majority of people do not stare because they're being disrespectfull, but rather in order to avoid being disrespectfull Edit: words and grammar. Bosch sells dishwashers in the US, so they seem like a German thing, if less common. Obviously they use some electricity but no more or possibly less water than hand washing. Almost no American house built or remodeled after about 1960 does not have a dishwasher, and even most apartments.

We don't even have the "w"-sound, it's missing from our language just like the "th"-sound. And yes, we have a lot of trains and many neighbouring countries. In Italy or France people have wine with their lunch - so what? Several federal states don't allow smoking in any public buildings; Nordrhein-Westfalen and Bayern especially. So, smoking only at home or outside! We still recycle far too little. It's actually far better to not even produce waste instead of recycling it (vermeiden statt recyclen). Electric clothes dryers are just wasting energy, if sun and wind can do a better job without using electricity.

Many Americans have gas dryers instead of electric. They cost about half as much to run. Still using energy of course. Just guessing, all energy costs are probably a lot higher in Germany. I know people in Las Vegas where it can be 110F (43 C) with 10% humidity outside and their neighborhood forbids clothes lines in YOUR OWN BACK YARD!

#7 sounds weird, given that your list is from 2015. Germany was like that before 2008. It was totally normal that people were smoking in every bar, restaurant and disco. This suddenly changed at midnight of 31.12.2007. I'm glad that this has changed and most of the public places are smoke free.

When I moved from the US to Germany in December, the photo I submitted for my permanent resident card was denied, holding up the process, because I smiled too much in the first photo. My new photo basically qualifies me for the next Netflix Docu-series.

That's because the picture can be used for facial recognition. Smiling apparently messes with the algorithms. It wasn't that way with the older ID cards.

Love your channel bro, a lot of the things on your list are true. The only thing i do not like about Germany is that it is SO FREAKING HARD to make friends. I am a very friendly social person who loves to make friends. I've been in Hamburg for 2 years and have yet to make 1 German friend! I am a Latino from Long Beach, CA, so far the only friends I've managed to make are Latinos or fellow American expats lol

Just came across your video. I just moved back to the states after living in Germany y 26 yrs. Really miss it and can really relate to this video. In the beginning I thought, I must have a obvious disease......no one said hi or greeted me! And smiling the look and response....do I know you? Wow. I loved Stuttgart. In Leinfelden I was 7 min from airport . Then train to work downtown 20 min to Hauptbahnhof! Didn,t own a car for 9 yrs. I loved it. Have fun !! Miss the relaxed conversation, dinners and just walking in interesting places. Clean food!

I hate that smoking is so normal in Germany. I wish we had big anti smoking campaigns like you have in US. My brother started smoking a couple of years ago and, since I often see the effects of it in my patients, all I can think of is what his life will be like when he's older. It makes me sad.

The older generations smoked much more than the young people. Every child learns at school that smoking is bad for your health. There are warnings with terrible pictures on the packaging. Self responsibility!

@@dl5136 Saying that there already is stuff being done, does not make sense if the problem still continuous. There is obviously not enough being done! Most people don't even know the name COPD, one of the worst diseases besides cancer that smoking can do. So obviously we need to teach our kids earlier and more, so that nobody ever has to see their family suffer through diseases that make you unable to breath or even lead to you needing a lung transplant or you fucking dieing from the most preventable reason.

I have a dishwasher and a dryer. However, I usually use the dryer only during the winter time, when I can't hang out the laundry because it is too humid/cold.

I'm born in SW-Germany, raised there for the most part and smiling has always been a sign of kindness, courteousness and openness. But, this might not be the typical use in East-Germany (that part of the country, quite nobody in West-Germany, was interested in between the last 1950s und 1989); there - I agree - smiling constantly, especially in some bigger cities like Magdeburg or Leipzig, has quite the opposite feeling of what you could expect in the West. Well, lots of things in both sides of Germany, is quite the opposite of the others; there are pros and cons, but smiling-issues? No way! Not in the normal (older) part of Germany :)

Some people who are depressed or in general fear any kind of rejection smile unnaturally often. I think the term is "smiling depression". In school, this can be found especially often with the more awkward and more lonely teens, at least in my experience.

The first "e" in Hefeweizen is a long vowel. If you pronounce it Heeefeweizen, you will sound like a German in an instant.

Ok you are genuinely funny! I've been toying with the idea of looking for work in Germany (I'm American) so this was informative. I was stationed there in the late 90's so I know some of the culture but I think it's different right outside a military base because everyone is used to Americans.

Yeah, the smoking. I used to go to a bar in SHA called the Casablanca. In winter it was closed up tighter than a duck's bum and EVERYBODY smoked. You'd spend a couple of hours there and the passive smoking was probably the equivalent of a pack a day.

I think there are more parties in still slightly SMALLER towns than Schwäbischhall. Schwäbisch Hall is a very proper, dense and orderly place, however in still slightly smaller towns or villages, which all tend to be quite close together, there are indeed many parties. At least "here or there". There are the ordinary towns, which have ordinary event parties or places for parties, then slightly bigger or just more traditional towns (which tend to have a lot of middle-aged and older people walking around during the day), and then there are towns slightly below these , which I would say along with even smaller villages can become more spontaneous party spots. That is my feeling about it... Probably nonsense. But the point is: it doesn't mean the big cities... I would say in places where there are several "Gymnasien" (higher schools) scattered around (taking in the youths from various places), but with a sense of bigger freedom than some stuffy town or routined evening businesses.

Interesting videos. We lived in Germany 1989-93....assigned with the USAF north of Aachen, Germany. _ Do not agree with 7-tolerating smoking and 11-staring...but otherwise, interesting list... _ also, my wife and I stumbled upon Schwäbisch Hall back in 1992 when traveling "down south"....nice little town
