the "next jose altuve" is not a kid with 50 trainers, 60 ~$300 bats and 20 ~$450 gloves. altuve grew up in a poor venezuelan town and only had one ball he used for practice with his dad every day.

@Summer Chamberlain This isn't a shot at him. He is a good player, he likes to play, but his parents don't need to focus on the future, as if justifying the purchase of all his equipment and trainers. They can just say, "we love our kid and we hope he does well." It's pretty obvious from the amount of stuff he has that they a) care about their kid and b) are obsessed with him making the big time. I think it is cool that they go out of their way to help him succeed in baseball, but as a parent, you need to have some sort of perspective about why you are doing things for your kid. I play travel ball, just like him, and my parents sometimes buy me equipment, or allow me to use money I earned on baseball, but they don't go around offering me to Time magazine and telling the world that I'm going to be a big leaguer. They do it because having nice equipment (albeit not 50 bats and dozens of private trainers, like him) makes me happy. They do it because I like playing baseball. My dad played pro ball, and he does not care whether I keep playing or stop. It seems as if, especially after the cameraman (most likely) asked the dad about whether Joey is being pushed, and the dad snapped at the camera guy about "life lessons through baseball," that Joey's parents are obsessed with his success. To be honest, no matter how hard he works, he may never overcome his physical disadvantages, and even if he does, he may never even go D1, or D2, or D3, or even make it off the high school JV team, and that is okay. He shouldn't have to be a pro baseball player for his parents to be proud of him.

Concerned the D1 word thrown around alot by both the player and mom and dad. My son had some d1 interest as he was a all state selection in HS and played on the best travel team in Ohio however he knew a private school he wanted to go to where he knew he could start as a freshman and get a ton of playing time and he was focused on his education major. He played NAIA and got over seventy five % as a outfielder of and expensive education payed for and never looked back or regretted his decision. I'm just saying keep an open mind and options open and don't get caught up in D1 trap.

Loving the game is important, but so did the fat 40 year olds in slow pitch softball leagues that did not even make it into the college level.

La_softball. player yeah where center is 200 something while I’m 1 age group above and our center is 400 at least 101 feet further plus he hit it to right where it’s shorter than center and we didn’t see what the fielder did he could’ve missed it so it rolled back all we saw was the hit and him run not what the fielder did
