For more Michael Phelps as a kid, see his 50y fly race from the same pool (Lejune Hall at the Naval Academy) earlier that year: • 11 year old Michael Ph... .
You can hear someone shouting "come on Phelps @2:10 and "good job Phelps" @2:23.

His strokes at a young age is already asymetrical. Add a longer glide, bigger looping motion, and dolphin kicks off the turns and Wallah! You have an olympic champion.

It's fascinating seeing the technique of these all time greats as kids - relative to the streamlined perfect technique they'd develop over time you can see they were, despite all their amazing talent, still look VERY rough. You can see it here, and the likes of Graf or Nadal on the tennis court.

30.08 34.00 (1:04.08) 34.56 (1:38.64) 34.55 (2:13.19) I used a stopwatch... The end was hard to tell and the video started when Phelps was in midair. I started the timer early to make up for this time difference. Overall, very consistent splits and a really fast time! I swam a 2:21 at age 12 and strive to go a 2:13.

@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 8 жыл бұрын
TooM3R It would be difficult to become world class at swimming starting at 16. The problem with swimming is it's quite technical, and technical skills usually require one to start at an early age if they want to be world class. The good news is if you are willing to do another sport, it is possible to become an International Pro at a more non-technical sport that is based on fitness. One such sport is road cycling, one such event you may be familiar with being the Tour de France. A good percentage of the pro peloton began cycling at the age of 16. A few have even begun as old as 21. However 16 is a good age to begin a cycling career with the aim of becoming an International Pro. If you trained hard and have ability, in 3-4 years you could be a Domestic Pro and another 2 years after that to International Pro. There are also other sports that are non-technical fitness based sports where you could become world class starting at 16 if you have ability. Tennis is another example of a sport that is technically based and requires one to begin at an early age.

Most 11 year olds on swim teams are faster than me. Ha! I'm 55 and I swim, well, no where near that speed. :D During a daily 4 mile swim I average about 1:55 per 100. If I could get down to 1:30/100 then maybe I could get in 5 miles in the morning. I only have about 2 hours and 20 minutes to swim. Gotta make the most of it.

@@LuvCake1281 Long course pools are not just in meters. I once trained in a 50 yard pool, and swam in a meet held in a 55 yard pool (that's 50.3 meters.) Depends on where you are and what's available there.
