Eleven-year-old Athena Elling will become the youngest student to graduate from Irvine Valley College this week.

@@machupikachu1085 Oh, is that how it is in the US? In my country, everyone has to pass calculus to graduate from university, no matter what degree they're taking. My sister has a degree in philosophy and literature, she had to take calculus classes.

Any kid can take acting and theatre classes at community college concurrently and get an associates degree then? I’m wasting my money on these kids theatre and arts studios? Would have to find late afternoon or evening classes to make it work with elementary school schedule.

I agree that the main thing is to get a job after this. That was the only talking point I encountered after graduating from a university. Also there is no one that can hire her due to child labor laws and most places will not hire someone under eighteen. So what was the point of all this. All she did was take the place of someone because they have limited class availability in a lot of cases. Whether people like it or not, you don't go to college just to get a degree you like. The reason is to get a job and the sad fact of it is, she can't do that for another few years. So what was the point of rushing it. Also in the college system, they tend to grade on a curve. I don't if she is smart or just smarter than your average eighteen your old from the year 2010 or whatever.

mmmm, I believe in certain age range and spend 4 seasons and learn certain subjects with same classmates to have proper development as human. they cannot watch PG 13 movies and how do they learn certain literatures, sociology, history, etc? it is not balanced for their body development and brain learning and I feel like there would be a huge problem later in their lives? I wonder how the experts are analysing and guiding those issues?

This should not be encouraged. People tend to forget that a lot of college elective classes get filled up fast. All she did was take the place of some other student that possibly wanted to attend that class in order to get a degree. If the class is full, you are potentially delaying that person from a degree. Also what is she suppose to do after this. The primary reason you go to a university or college is to get a job after that. The time when you went there to learn something, that you just want to learn for fun, is just about over. Whatever it is she is learning may not be useful in a few years because things change so fast now. This is something she did to impress the news media and like it or not, that is all this is. They also tend to grade on a curve now because a lot of students just don't know as much as they did in previous years. If this was high school and someone graduated earlier then that is fine. However, for whatever reason, I don't think anyone would even care about that anymore. When was the last time you heard of an eleven year old graduating high school. Unfortunately, it appears no one cares about that. Which just makes graduating high school seem insignificant. Which is an insult to the teachers who teach in high school.

Who knows, maybe she just wanted to get high school and uni out of the way fast so she can spend her teen years delving into some specialized knowledge she's interested in, or maybe practicing a certain skill? Artisans in Japan and other Asian countries spend 20+ years practicing a craft before they can be considered a master. Usually they start at the craft from the time they are very young. This is why we don't have any artisans anymore, because children/teens spend most of their time in school learning stuff they're not interested in that they immediately forget after graduating.

Big Freakn' Deal. I'm a plumber with a high school diploma. My wife, is a high school custodian. Our one son, and two daughterss are all on the highest honor roll. And they will not be attending a liberal college that scourns America.
