$1100, $400, $125 Margaux Wines: Which is BETTER?

Ай бұрын

In this video we’re comparing three 1855 Bordeaux Classification wines:
Chateau Margaux, Chateau Palmer, and Chateau Brane-Cantenac. All
three wines are produced in the same Margaux appellation and even in the
same commune. All of the wines are from the 2005 vintage, which is a
classic vintage In Bordeaux and particularly successful in Margaux.
Often referred to as “the Queen of First Growths”, Chateau Margaux is one
of the most collectable wine from Bordeaux and retails for $1,100. The
Chateau Palmer retails for about $400 and the Brane-Cantenac for $125.
We ask “How much better, if at all, is a $1,000+ compared to a $125
bottle?”
While comparing the wines, we explore what makes the soil so unique in
Margaux along with the history and location of each of the chateaux.
Viewers will get facts and research on each of the wines, along with our
subjective opinions. We conclude the video by comparing our preferences
with that of the CellarTracker community. See what our final conclusions
are about these incredible wines.
The video includes original footage from Margaux along with footage from
our wine cellar from where the bottles were chosen.

Instead of people focusing on what you should’ve done in the video, we all need to recognize the effort (time and money) to create this video. The editing is superb and adding side notes to each wine elevates the content. It’s entertaining and engaging as well. Because of this video, I took a 2009 Brane-Cantenac to Flemmings last night and it was AMAZING. Thank you all 🙏🏻

First of all, thank you for your kind words. Second, you are absolutely right - the editing is quite challenging and B is doing it all by herself. Self taught. I love the fact that the '09 Brane-Cantenac was fabulous - I have four bottles of that vintage in my cellar and now I'm really excited.

Thank you for your nice comments - our goal is to keep it real. We went back and forth on having Stacey tasting them blind. It's hard not to notice the wine smell and color when I open the wine so I would need to have someone else do it for us. We'll figure it out and in the future we'll do some blind tasting for sure based on all the feedback.

I have had all three wines but with different vintages: 1983 Palmer, 1986 Margaux, and 2019 Brane-Cantenac. The Palmer and the Margaux were neck to neck with Palmer slightly ahead. But the Margaux showed a certain breeding that Palmer could not match. The Brane-Cantenac was a distance third. I really enjoy your channel.

'83 Palmer is legendary - what a treat! I had so lucky to have had a bottle of that last year in Paris from a chateau re-release. It was special. I'm glad you had a great experience with the '86 Margaux. I've found the '86 vintage to be closed to the point where I'm wondering if they'll ever come around. Good for you!!

2019 Brane is not even fair to compare. No 2019 from Bordeaux is even close to be ready to drink. It is one of the vintages that would need a lot if time to show the potential. Last 3 months i have tried over 150 2019 vintages here in Bordeaux and every time on both nose and pallet it is not that nice feeling. But it will be a beautiful vintage and should start open up in maybe 7-8 years.

Idea!!: now that we know “Pops” as you lovingly call him loves Bordeaux. You should do a blind tasting with the Palmer Bordeaux, and a California Bordeaux style blend and another Bordeaux style blend from a different country. (Super Tuscan?) Make them all from vintages that are with a few years of each other and that rates really high for that particular region and also make them around the same price point. Keep up the good work love your videos 😊

I take this episode as evidence that the wine needs to cellar long enough to get to its happy place so it will drink really well. I would have liked to pick the Chateau Margaux as my favorite but the Palmer was clearly in a better place. Brane Cantenac? I am not the barnyard guy, so good to know. The only way to know is to buy more than one bottle and take your best guess about when to open a bottle to zero in on when the vintage of that wine is at its best.

I'm about the same as you($20-100). My wheelhouse is $35-80(some XLNT St Emilion for $35, Left Bank starts at $45). I'm a Quality/Price ratio(QPR) guy, like you. I get as much overall enjoyment with a 97-point wine(shorthand) for $75, as a 98-pt, $125-200 wine. HOWEVER, a 100-pt wine is a Different Animal. To keep an example within Margaux, a $45(now $75) 2015 Giscours was Great(feminine, elegant but complex smell & flavor. Medium to Med-Heavy balance). 96 points.

Bordeaux pricing is heavily influenced by several factors. That 2005 will be slightly over $1k, yet say, a 1998 will be under $500. Futures can often be purchased for under $400. Same can be said for those other wines. The answer to your question applies to each individual. It would have been more interesting if you covered the labels, tasted them blind, then revealed them at the end along with the prices.

For me, Brane-Cantenac is the epitome of barnyard smell and the jammy seductive taste...Quite like it. Only tasted 1986 Margaux, which was fantastic, and 1986 Palmer, which I did not like too much. One notion about the tasting: half-blind would have been more honest? Or maybe the styles are so distinctive that there would have been too many giveaways in any case...

There have been lots of suggestions about single-blind tasting and we plan to incorporate those into future episodes. You bring up a good point, which is why we didn't do it this time. The aromas and colors are different enough that I would need someone else to open the bottles for us. Also, I think the wines were distinct enough in this episode that they would be easy to pick out. On the other hand, I think single-blind tasting is a great suggestion that we'll incorporate in future episodes. We're just getting started so we'll learn as we go!
