Hi Anthony, it is a great loco, gorgeous is pushing it to far, and it does what it is meant to do very well. The issue with the axles contacts took a while to understand, but I got there, but after dealing with Dapol and Farish locos for years I have become accustomed to sorting silly problems ! The lack of instructions is a problem with all manufacturers though at the moment and this loco has very poor ones, but at least it had an exploded view of the loco !

As far as I can tell, the only reason that retailers got their 59s before deposit customers was down to Model Rail Scotland. Revolution were able to hand the models to retailers in person but had to work through all of the pre orders, separate out all of the 59/0s from the /1 and/2s and issue all of the invoices all while getting ready for the first show of the year. The priority for them was the fully paid orders. While I understand your frustration, cancelling your current pre-order could mean missing out.

They did the same thing with the Class 128 ! I am still of a mind to cancel the order and I am not alone in that and if I miss out, I miss out ! If they want the money up front they must supply to those people who have paid first, because they are funding the project.

@@PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland100% agree with this. I had mine marked as fully paid on 16th February and I'm still awaiting despatch. I appreciate it's easier to shift a bulk trade order, but it alienates customers like us, who they rely on to make the project happen to start with. I haven't ordered any 66s as I wanted to see how the 59 came out first. The lack of anything but esu decoder at the moment is also a factor which pushes me towards the new Dapol version instead.

@@PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland Indeed, hopefully in future supply will be better. Having seen the next gen of 59 from dapol, there isn't much in it, at least not for normal operation (i.e head/tail lamps working directionally). I'm not sure having the ability to have the head lights on both ends is going to see much use on a normal round and round layout.

I left the axles in the bogie because I think it's likely to break the bogie otherwise and just bent the silver coloured metal towards the axle on each side with a very small screwdriver so it was equal and the axle point was in and in contact with the cup. Yes I have heard that Zimo were looking into making a E24/Next28 but that was all.

I have two 59s. Both have issues going over points. Both have sound and the continuous restarting (over 45 seconds is a pain) leads me to turn off the sound and the continuous stalling is a pain too. I will look at what you did to see if I can sort it or I will stick stay alives in them. Breaking is the other issue that causes consternation. As for pulling power they are awesome. I have another 59 on order and 3 66s. I just hope they don’t have the same issues.

Hi Mark! An interesting take on the new class 59 from Revolution Trains! It looks excellent, and has fantastic pulling power, and some novel lighting features, but I'm not sure I'd be giving it such a good review with it stalling on curves as not everyone has your maintenance abilities! I'm getting fed up at having to fiddle with new locos and rolling stock to get them to work, especially as they cost so much! Not sure if their class 66 is on general sale yet, but they had them priced up on the RT stand at The London Festival of Railway Modelling a couple of weeks ago, so I assume they were selling them! Do you know if the new ESU decoder is Railcom enabled? All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, I know absolutely nothing about the ESU decoder that is in it other that the info that's in the comments from Mike Buick who is part of Revolution Trains. I do know they will be replaced with Zimo ones asap ! I also doubt if many people will use all the lighting functions available so as I said, a Next18 would have been better. As for the loco, it only had minor problems, but I do agree that there should not be any. But next to a Dapol or a Farish it is far superior. As for the 66, they are at the pre-order stage

@@PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIrelandIn fairness I use DecoderPro on laptop to configure my decoders, but dynamic braking is less than 5 clicks to set up. But I’m sure the Zimo is too, they’re likely similarly as simple to setup on DecoderPro. Ps. I do think Zimo slow speed performance is marginally better, but ESU has better sound in my opinion.

@@mrhobbles385 I am still waiting for my GBRF One with sound so I can't answer that one yet ! The issue with the braking for me is that I can not find out which CV,s to change to what values. @@PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland DecoderPro abstracts the CV's away so enabling dynamic braking is just clicking on the dynamic braking options, so I don't know which CV's they are I'm afraid. I recommend it, it's free software. However, I just looked the Lokpilot 5 manual on the ESU website (free download) and it seems the CV's are documented in there. They don't seem to be attempting to keep them secret. CV 179-184 seem to control this feature. See page 82 in the manual pdf for the descriptions of the CV's.

@PiddleInTheMarshbyMarkIreland

Hi Ronnie, the reason for that was because I didn't want their sound or decoder, as I said, I wanted Zimo. I have since got a Sound fitted GBRF One and I hate the racket it makes. The constant release of air is false, So it stays silent. As soon as a Zimo version is available those awful decoders will be gone and I have today cancelled my future orders with Revolution Trains because of that decoder. If they do produce what I want with a Next18 I will buy from a retailer.

The answer is also to be found on KZfaq from lots of people. I am not a lover of the Class 66 at all, or the 59, but they are part of history being the first privately owned locos. For me it's the Class 35 and 52

Hi Mark, the active braking does work but the throttle must be at speed step 0 with the loco coasting. It will also be effected by 28 / 128 speed step set up on your throttle, and the value for CV 4, which I cannot remember off the top of my head, but if you haven’t changed it, is high enough to allow the loco to coast. ESU decoders do not use the same architecture and protocols as Zimo, and likewise, other decoder manufacturers all have their own way of doing things, just like Command Stations, whereby they are all different. Bachmann constantly switch between Zimo and ESU, and interfaces to suit their models. The E24 decoder is the next evolution of DCC functionality and we used it to offer the functions required to operate the lighting functions - it’s identical in operation to any other ESU V5 decoder and has been used in North America as a wired version for many years without any issues. Zimo are producing an E24 decoder - YooChoos had the prototype at Alexandra Palace. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use our sound project as it’s an ESU only file - no different to every sound project as they’re non compatible but I’m not sure if Dapol will be selling their file as a stand alone option? They didn’t with the OO scale version so it’s highly unlikely. I hope that helps to balance things out.

Hi Mike, CV 3 is actually set to 55 for acceleration, CV 4 was set to 150 and can be changed back. I always use speed step 126. So excuse me if I am being stupid but how does one apply the brake ?
@mikebuick2332
@mikebuick2332 4 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, obviously I don’t know what command station you are using but wind the throttle back to zero and the inertia will allow the loco to continue on for some while before it stops of its own accord. It’s during this time that you use the F5 function and it will apply the brake. It’s fairly similar to F2 on a Zimo decoder whereby you may have to continually toggle the function off and on to achieve the desired braking style but it does work. I’ve posted a few videos on Facebook of both our samples and my own personal loco using the F5 function which incidentally works very well with F8 drive lock. I use both Zimo and ESU decoders on Oak Road and it can get a little disorienting when you forget which loco has which decoder but once you’ve got used to the driving characteristics, it’s a lot of fun. Just as an aside, double check your wheel back to backs. If you aim at 7.6mm the axle pin points will push themselves further in to the pickup cups and should alleviate the stalling on your insulfrog points. Hope that helps. 👍

@@mikebuick2332 I use F2 braking on Zimo now and love it. Any idea what CV 179 and 180 do ? I will go and try it again with F5 when I get home from work. I use a Bachmann Dynamis Ultima, okay maybe not the best but it suits me fine and works well.
@mikebuick2332
@mikebuick2332 4 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, they are the CVs for the Automatic Brake Control (ABC - most decoders have this) and are used in the active brake function too. I’m no DCC expert by any means but you can have various ‘user’ controlled braking functions with the ESU decoders and it’s a case of reading through the manual (found on the ESU website) and playing around with the settings. There’s three brake functions but ultimately, the values just have an effect on the value of CV4 when whatever function they’ve been assigned to is activated. This isn’t necessarily simple if a command station isn’t one of the more advanced versions that allow you to go deeper in to the programming suite. If all goes wrong, just remember CV8 to value 8 to reset. As much as we’d like it to be, there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to DCC and there’s a huge gulf between basic DCC users and those who are Rocket Scientists. Damned if we do and damned if we don’t is the best expression. Once I’ve finished work for the day I’ll upload a video to my YT channel shown my 59 pulling up using the F5 function. Cheers Mike

Have to say, you're giving out misinformation on this video regarding ESU decoders and their CV setups. Other than a physically different appearance, the Next28 is no different to a Next18 other than it has more functions. Those functions are controlled with CV's, just as they are with any other decoder (including Zimo......) - ESU document them ALL on their website and it isn't difficult to find them.
