I’ve never enjoyed making a dirt road or parking lot, but that fact the you can paint a dirt road amazes me and gives me confidence to try it differently. Thank you for uploading these wonderful videos!

Your welcome MLB. Just dilute the paint, use smudgy colors to start with, and keep blending! Practice makes perfect. This is the 3rd gravel section i did. ;-)

I use the vacuum from woodland scenics to suck up the excess grass. It runs on a 9v battery and catches everything in a small container, so you can reuse the grass. Another thing you can try is to drive a little car through the almost-dry soil, to create tyre tracks.

I have seen that vacuüm cleaner. Now I am using a normal vacuüm machine with a panty hose to catch the grass.

I'm really glad you're doing this series. I'm also working on a diorama (okay, 2.5x13.5 feet might be a bit large for a diorama, but I don't have a layout at the moment so it has to pull double duty) and it is similarly in an urban-industrial area with street-running. I'm currently laying track & soldering at the moment, as well as building a DCC system from scratch & converting some older locos to DCC+sound, but these videos will be a fantastic resource in a month or so. Something you may or may not wish to look into is scratch building structures with cardstock. I found a channel on YT that goes by the name of Chandwell, and it got me super inspired, as the host does such fantastic, convincing work. I'm not sure if the details would be as convincing in HO scale though, as he models in British N gauge, but it might be worth a try, and cardstock & paper is miles more cost effective than textured styrene, though you may have to do your weathering digitally, due to a lack of texture on the model.

Great to hear that my videos are found by the right folks. Can i find your trackplan somewhere on the internet? I will check out the card stock options. For now i am planning to use a mix of ABR modulair building system and kitbashing plastic kits.

@@DubaiTrains The track plan is a custom affair, built in AnyRail 6. Haven't uploaded it anywhere (and the left hand half isn't final yet, that's phase II of the build). It's an N scale Layout with continuous running and two reverse loops (one significantly more elegantly placed than the other) & it's primarily designed for operations over prototypical look, (minimum radius 9") as its main purpose is to validate my interest in the hobby and to build my modeling skills. I'll see if I can't upload the plan to reddit here shortly. The majority of the industrial branch line is street running with the main switching area having a run-around where the tracks are placed in what would normally be on street parking, so that way I can leave cars for inspection without blocking the road. Another interesting operational concern is that this line has a trolly right of way on it, so the line has to be cleared frequently for the passenger service.

Sounds like you have a good idea of what you want. The concept as you describe will be fun to operate. Smart to first validate your interests. And when you get hooked, you'll find that with the first few layout your interests will get refined leading to a different layout. Don't get discouraged if the first structures or scenery you do isn't what you expected. Just keep on practicing and before you'll know it you will amaze yourself.

Hi Manolo, a train does run on it. But the purpose of the diorama is to try new technieks for my next layout. Once it's finished ill probably put it on display somewhere.
