I’ve been wanting to review a prehistoric mammal for the longest time but just didn’t know where to start.
Addedum 1: I mentioned in the video that this is my first, but thanks to viewer Antônio Rocha I realised I completely forgot about the iToy Paraceratherium that I reviewed 🤦‍♂️, so it's actually my second prehistoric mammal.
Addendum 2: I was a little puzzled what those regularly spaced bumps along the back could be.
Thanks to viewer paleodude for furnishing that info: these are also tubercles, that contain specialized hair called vibrissae, which may have a sensory function.
Doing the PNSO Mosasaurus reminded me of another even older PNSO sea animal that I have… and that decided me! Let me introduce you to the PNSO Basilosaurus, my very first PNSO model!
Even from its beginnings, PNSO showed much promise, as exemplified in the blend of detail, paint application and scientific accuracy in this early model. I was also delighted that PNSO was tackling not just the usual suspects that were popular, safe, yet, so common. As we have seen, PNSO has lived up to its original promise!
Prehistoric mammals are fascinating creatures because they are so distant and yet so familiar. It is a wonder to explore the idea of evolution because mammals are more relatable in many ways. The notion that the largest animals on the planet came from somewhere, and that somewhere was the land, as smallish animals, should bring us a sense of not just humility, but also inspiration.
