Hmm, what a coincidence...I just checked out a FT-817 for an estate sale on my bench and fortunately it was working FB, lucky me! I had a suspicion about half way thru the video that it might be the issue you found, but it is so easy to look back when you're not in the hot seat and see a potential problem. Good job Peter, thanks for sharing, I always learn something new watching your great videos. 73 - Dino KL0S

Peter, thanks again for another great trouble shooting video. Although it was a simple fix in the end folks now know how to troubleshoot this in case there was a real problem. Well done my friend. I learned a while back to just reset the units when they come in. I had one on the bench for two weeks trying to find an issue. In the end it was a menu setting lol. Had me pulling my hair out. Thanks again for a very well explained video.

The outcome was more or less a surprise to me. Following your analysis i was thinking quickly, check the switching transistors, check them, check them.... to be really honest I would have gone and look circuit why the "piep-Ing." transistor was not switched on. And probably would have spend cloudless for hours ( gone to driving unit.... etc). Going to the Manuel and switching it on... brilliant! Thanks for this lesson.

does this transceiver have a PI5V331 configured as a double balanced Tayloe Mixer if so then check the 74HC74 configured as a Johnson Counter to see if the quadrature switching signals are there or not if they are not then the problem might be the oscillator quadrupler might not be working as that is what drives the 74HC74 configured as a Johnson Counter to generate the quadrature signals that drive the PI5V331 configured as a double balanced Tayloe Mixer, this is just my thoughts on the problem as I don't have the schematics, That optional filter not being fitted didn't cross my mind.

Trace the path from the balance modulator, since it is working, the switch might be defective, but ceramic filters often go bad because there are never any blocking capacitors on the input/output leads. Is RX normal, or distorted/reduced in levels?

"Nice" fault! Moral: always check for finger trouble first! Extra flux is not always a sign of "unauthorised" repairs. It is sometimes also a sign of FACTORY reworking (due to a poor soldering process during manufacture), and only discovered on test. Note also the extra flux on the filter legs. These and other delicate/expensive items are often fitted AFTER the board is soldered, in order to protect them from the radiant heat/hot air used to melt the SMD solder paste.

@@TRXLab well, beleive me, when I send my computer at HP, they did not hesitate 1 second to reset it, same with my cell phone when I had an issue with it, the first thing that they did was to reset it... I think, when you warn all your clients that there might be a possibility that their unit will be reset after servicing would help you trouble shoot even faster... after seeing your video and all the trouble (though really interesting to follow your procedure) you would have solve the problem in seconds !!! After a reset, if it is still a problem, NOW you trouble shoot, which you do wonderfully ! Thanks for all your videos, really instructive. I wish I had more talent to do that as a business !

A couple of years ago more like 4 now.We set up at field day operated until midnight, and a thunder storm came through while we were sleeping in the concrete basement of a TV transmitter site. Never could hear the storm when we woke in the morning all was dead no receive or transmit never did figure out what happened as the antenna never was hit. I still use the antenna today I'm gonna dig it out and see if a near strike scrambled the settings on the optional filter.Jim

In general, I find the ideas and comments of clients interesting, but not to be relied upon when it comes to eliminating possibilities. It is precisely because they overlooked something, or assumed something which was not true.. that they come to us for help !

HaHa! one of the best stories.. but. seems to me with an adapter-pcb with for example 2SMAs - we could take out and feed back this ssb - signal over the optional-filter - header????? hmmm... 73 de DL1LEP & thank You...
