Күн бұрын

The first episode in the series on a DIY project to build an inflatable boat. This video takes you through a series of pictures from design to construction of the tubes. This design is a 12.5 ft long boat with 18" tube diameter. A soft bottom inflatable with a fiberglass/wood transom.

As a PVC boat maker, i`m impressed. This kind of baffles are new to me, not the easiest way to make them, but yeah, it works, same for the cones. Inner seam would be on the outside of the tube in mass production line (it`s easier and faster to make the tube that way). You`ve come up with a cool strip cutter! My only advice for any future projects of yours is to cut strips diagonally to the edge of fabric ( 45 ± 10 degrees), so strips become compliant, flexible and being easily ironed without wrinkles. That of course takes more material. Thanks for the video!

@shuldiner2007

@@mohalmisri1230 In Egypt, i believe it easily gets +40 or more, so PVC seams might fall apart. Above +60 degrees PVC loses its qualities. There was a case about inflatable boats being sent to UAE, and all of the boats fell apart. I see 2 solutions for hot regions - 1) material with additives PVC/PU; 2) hypalon/synthetic rubber. PU is a special poly-urethane additive which widens the temperature range of usage up to +70. Hypalon is very expensive and very different, not for mass production. It really depends on what kind of production line do you want to start. Do you want to make a lot of small boats, or few big boats, or RIBs?

With the high price of a good inflatable boat, it just makes since to build it yourself. I'm thinking of getting a messed up aluminum Highfield aluminum inflatable Classic 360 or similar and making new tubes out of Hypalon. I'll be heat welding the material together if my TPO/ PVC heat welding gun works on Hypalon. I would think it would but who knows. Presently, I'm using this gun for installing TPO flat roof membrane on the roof of my home. You did a great job on this build and it gives me confidence to do it myself. Hopefully I can find a donor aluminum hull to build out from. Highfield boats are made in China and I'm not willing to purchase anything made there. I love supporting American made products but will support other free world countries like Japan, Australia, Canada and Western Europe. Since I haven't found someone who makes a good aluminum inflatable boat in America, it seems as though I'm forced to build it myself.

It's so good to see someone building an inflatable, I have been playing around with the idea of building one for years. I don't understand why it's not more common, good inflatables are expensive and its hard to find one combining all the elements you want. I really like your design, I've owned 3 inflatables a 12' Achilles, 8' Zodiac. and a 10' Achilles with everything from a 2hp to a 9.9hp pushing them, from my experience I think your added width is going to help get it on plane quickly with less power and be great for passenger comfort. Please keep going on the project and the updates you've gotten me motivated to give it a shot.

Ken, it's great to see you tackle this project. Of all the boat building methods out there, I think the inflatable boat process is the lest understood. I've been looking at the diypackraft.com site as a possible first project. Also I've been considering making an inflatable ama for my sailing kayak, similar to the Balogh sail design type. My coworker wants to sell me a mid eighties Avon RIB. It needs new tubes. The price is right, but the project is big and unsupported by other amateurs. Some KZfaq videos exist with pros retubing boats. That's not quite enough info for me. What are your thoughts on this?
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about this (inflatables) being unsupported by amateur boat builders on the internet. I have looked and have not found much other than professional inflatable videos as you have stated. But, I still wouldn't be afraid to tackle re-tubing a RIB. Some advantages are you have the old tubes to deconstruct and pattern to, you can change up to a heavier or different tube material, and tools needed are not hard to come by (scissors, straight edge, & easy built seam cutter). Please let me know if you would like any additional information. Ken

PVC Inflatable Boat DIY I think the folding kayak market was just as opaque and confusing...until Tom Yost brought all of that crashing down. His dissemination of his building manual represented a huge step forward in boat building, and also was a disruptive force, in a very good way. I wonder if the inflatable boat building arena is next. I’d love to have a rebuilt RIB. Heidi’s boat that she offered me is a craft with awesome potential. Lightweight, robust, powerful and much more accessible to passengers getting on and off from the sides. If I had a couple of grand in cash, I would do it now. Good luck with your project!

Hey there! This is one of the only videos of constructing an inflatable of any sorts and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am in the midst of creating my own similar project. I too have been using HH-66 glue but have found it to create bubbles and creases in my material which is causing leaks. My questions are did you clamp every seal you did? For the doubler did you some pressure to create a seal? I read one of your comments about the doubler and you said it had screws/ no glue and was confused. Thank you for this fantastic video and would love a reply. Also would love to see you make another project like this- great work.

@pvcinflatableboatdiy934

I haven't tried a hot weld joint, not having the right tools. From what I've read, using a flexible PVC glue is more widely used in the inflatable boat industry. This of course adds a significant cost to the project. I estimate I will use around $250USD in HH-66 glue.

@pvcinflatableboatdiy934
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934 6 жыл бұрын
Rafael. I transferred measurements from an excel spreadsheet to a 1" x 1" grid (paper), then laid out pattern on underlayment plywood. the horizontal (24 degs) and vertical (20 degs) are basically a sine wave pattern developed to produce half the angle when added together. Not the best answer I know. I can send the excel spreadsheet with a PDF of how I made the pattern if you like. Contact me at kenmayer13@yahoo.com.

Hi! I was wondering if you might be able to provide some more information, like the specific type of valve you used, as well as specifics on how you sealed around the valve?
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934 3 жыл бұрын
I used a generic valve found on Amazon, it is the same as a Halley Roberts valve. I glued in a doubler (second piece of fabric also called a doughnut) to the inside of the valve location. The valve just screws together , not glued. The mechanical compression seals the valve to the fabric. I had no leaks on the 3 valves for the boat. Hope this helps.

I used a good quality silicone (GE 100%) and installed them with some air in the tubes to seat them. Use enough to get some squeeze out and let it set up overnight. My caps were from NRS, not sure if they make them anymore. But there is a video on KZfaq by NRS on how to install.

I wonder where you bought 50 mil pvc fabric. I already have a 0.9mm thick Saturn inflatable and it's strong enough. 50 mil is about 1.2mm. Based on the size of your design, it'll be too heavy. I'm planning to build one with 0.9 mm fabric. I think your interior width is too wide. It's hard to handle such size. Transom will need an angle , best about 8 degree (standard is 12) or the boat will handle terribly (too much bow rise). Tube from transom to end about 18 inch is sufficient. Don't use cones at the end, just simple tube for max buoyancy. That's where the heavy load will be. HH66 is good glue but expensive. Maybe a welding gun helps cut down cost.
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934
@pvcinflatableboatdiy934 6 жыл бұрын
50 mil PVC was purchased from Billboard Tarps out of Minnesota, it is heavy, maybe too heavy. Yes, it is a wide design and looking at other designs does seem a bit wide. HH-66 is expensive, heat welding is an option I thought about using but had never done before. The transom will have a 12deg angle. I do plan on an inflatable keel to add some better handling. Not a lot of information out there to go on.

PVC Inflatable Boat DIY Thanks for reply. It's not that hard once you got the pieces cut out right. The critical part is get the dimesion right so it will perform as intended. The wide hull will make rowing very difficult.

I2bang3 - Yes the wide hull will be much harder to row. hopefully not a lot of need for that. I did purchase longer oars/paddles. The hardest part is the glue up (assuming the pieces are cut out right). The material is bulky. I glued short seams first and then the long seams to close up the boat. repaired a few small leaks and then added the outer seam tape. your lighter material will help.
