Yeah Ben Shapiro says that movie is a bad example because “clearly the dude killed his father” Strange a very intelligent man who often with movies missses the whole point. Just like when he said civil was was stupid because iron man is meant to be the rebel and captain America is meant to follow orders….etc When real fans know they picked the rights sides for their character because the other movies set iron man up to be humbled by past events and sets Steve up to be suspicious of authority.

That guy is dumb and bad at understanding character then. Cap was the one who rebelled in the Civil War comics too(because he represented the ideal of America, not the politicians, and Iron Man felt they needed to be kept controlled after his dealing with his alcoholism and nearly killing people in a fight with Machine Man while piloting the Iron Man suit drunk.)

And pay attention to the *distance* , *angle* , *height* of the shots as the movie progresses. It's subtle and effective. Also- introducing the second knife that way completely *violates* the rules of evidence in trials. It would be a mistrial at best. When lawyers see this... they feel they way I do almost every single time computers or role playing games are portrayed in movies.

This is another of those "everyone needs to watch this movie" movies. I recently was called to jury duty and actually found myself in a very similar position. 11 to 1. I was actually able to sway the group to find the defendant not guilty of the most serious charge against him (the only one refuted by the defense). I could not help but think of this movie (and the remake) during the process.

I was on such a jury, as the foreman, with an 11-to-1 initial vote.A big man was accused of beating down a meter maid over a parking ticket. It was a 4-hour trial...and we deliberated four days. I tried to call it a hung jury, but the judge said, "No, go back and deliver a verdict." If I were to compare myself to the jurors in this movie, I would be the E.G. Marshall character (the man who "never" sweated). I was one of the last people holding out for guilty until I was finally convinced that the one piece of evidence I thought unshakable wasn't as clear as I originally thought.

This movie continues to be fascinating on re-watch. All the actors remain in character even when not speaking. It's interesting to watch their expressions and actions as events progress. For instance, the guy who was anxious to get to a ball game was looking at his watch while they were still in the courtroom. The man who defended the old man helped the old man into his chair when they first entered the jury room.

My father was a lawyer, and he called this movie the greatest fantasy ever made. Tbc, he loved this movie. But, according to him, no jury ever has ever been this effective. He once had a case where the entire jury voted in writing, and not one of the 12 spelled the word "guilty" correctly. (They all got the word "not", to their credit.)

Ooh, you're missing out on some great classics, a lot of them as taut and as gripping as Twelve Angry Men. If you like the austere hard black and white that involve just a few sets and seem to take place in real time, then check out 'Fail Safe' which also stars Henry Fonda and which is actually shot live like a play. It's about the American President and the chiefs of staff discovering that a computer glitch has ordered their nuclear bombers to attack Russia. Most of it takes place in a bunker. It's pretty gripping, though not quite as great as 12 Angry Men. Another great thrilling black and white movie is 'The Train' where French resistance workers attempt to derail a certain nazi train, starring Burt Lancaster. It's brilliant, and real trains are crashed throughout the movie. Finally try Billy Wilder's 'The Apartment', which is just incredible. I love that period of American actors, and 12 Angry Men has so many great veterans from stage and screen you'll see cropping up the more of these films you catch.

Same comment from above, but also for you: I'm late to this reaction and suggestions, but if you're willing to try something quite different (and rewarding), consider a Buster Keaton silent film. The General is commonly found on top-films-of-all-time lists and has one of the most expensive stunts of all time; Steamboat Bill, Jr. has one of the most dangerous stunts of all time (you've probably seen it w/o realizing it); Sherlock, Jr. is a fun short entry (about 40 minutes); Our Hospitality and The Navigator are also top contenders...I could go on. I highly highly very much extremely totally recommend checking his work out, even if for your own enjoyment. (As a side note, I believe his pre-MGM work--all of the films I recommended are pre-MGM--are no longer in copyright; I believe it is only the scores that have been made for restorations, etc. that might fall under a copyright issue.)

While 12 AM is a well written and has 12 Oscar winner caliber acting jobs, the remake not so much. Overall it is not a 'good' movie. It is really a movie filled with plot holes and contrivances. Any rational person sitting on the jury paying attention for 4 days of testimony could tear up all of the emotion laced arguments from both side and come to the guilty verdict. Let me just go over a few point. The old woman didn't say she put her glasses on therefore she couldn't see the crime. Well there are reading glasses, maybe she was reading a spicy romance novel at the time, old people get less sleep due to reduced production of Melatonin, so she could have been awake, plus how could she sleep with the train going by. People do things instinctively, the failure to state thay she put her glasses on or off is irrelevant that would be a natural action that you do without thinking of it. He is acting like a demented D&D Game Master. You're just got eaten by the dragon. What dragon. The one standing in front of you. You didn't say there was a dragon standing in front of me. You didn't ask if there was a dragon standing in front of you. People's perception of time is not accurate. If you are asked how long does it take to do something your perceived estimate, 20 seconds to cross the room , is not necessarily the actual time. So you can't pick some point in time and calculate second by second what happened. The not remembering what movie you saw 3 weeks ago is completely different than 1 hr ago. And some movies are so bad they are forgotten while you are watching them. At that time of night how many people are at a late night movie. Yet no one saw him at the movie, if someone did and this was a major news story several people could have come forward to say he was there. This guy has a very unique set of facial features.

To Kill A Mockingbird (1962), Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Like 12 Angry Men, they both know how to build tension and emotion slowly and subtly to great effect, and are beautifully shot. It's A Wonderful Life (1946) is a beautiful old movie but it's a Christmas movie - I'd recommend it when the time comes, though. While you're waiting, Jimmy Stewart, who stars in it, also did Harvey (1950), a comedy about a man and his best friend, an invisible six-foot tall rabbit. Marx Brothers movies are great old comedies as well, I would suggest any of The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Horse Feathers (1932), Duck Soup (1933), or A Night at the Opera (1935). I say any because honestly, they all have some great bits. The boys started their careers during the vaudeville age and are absolute masters of their craft. Their physical comedy, their wordplay, their facial expressions, all wonderful. Margaret Dumont is the best straight man (er, woman) that ever lived. Fight me. Fiddler on the Roof (1971) is not as old as others on this list but is no less a goodie, a beautiful musical that is - well, a lot of things. Funny, sad, touching, it's a beautiful story. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (1966) is all comedy and goes full on ridiculous just before the end. Lots of big names in this one - including Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, Buster Keaton, and Michael Crawford, who - segue! - also appeared in another excellent musical comedy, Hello, Dolly! (1969) which also has Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau.

Paul Winkle, who says the boy is definitely guilty, has been saying to me for months that the knife fight in "Rebel Without a Cause" is a crusher for the defense. But it's not, at all. Anyone can watch the "Rebel Without A Cause" knife-fight scene on KZfaq. The best video is titled "Rebel Without a Cause (1955) - The Knife Fight Scene (5/10) | Movieclips" and the channel is Movieclips. 1) During the knife fight scene, at least 13 stabs/jabs/thrusts are attempted with switchblades, and *all of them* are attempted with an "underhanded" motion/grip: the way a switchblade should be used, not the way a normal knife would be. 2) From the beginning of the knife fight - from the first point where both fighters have their switchblades open (0:33) - to the end - (where the winner throws down his knife (2:02)) , it lasts for 1:29 seconds, which is 89 seconds. There are 2 fighters with their knives open through nearly all of that, so I will multiply that by 2: switchblades are open for about 178 seconds. Of that time, only 1 fighter at any point holds his switchblade the wrong way - that is, the way a person would hold a normal knife - and that lasts for only about 5 seconds (1:25 to about 1:30). 5 seconds is less than 3% of the total time. To recap: 1) 100% of the 13+ stabs/jabs/thrusts are done the correct way for a switchblade. 2) For less than 3% of the time is a switchblade held the wrong way, and no stab/jab/thrust is done with a switchblade when it is held the wrong way. THIS IS PAUL'S GREAT REFUTATION THAT HE'S BEEN PUSHING FOR MONTHS! PROOF THAT THE BOY IS GUILTY! LOL!!!

I'm so happy you picked this movie! A lot of the reactors seem to avoid the classics. You were so right about the last man to change his mind. He held out for so long because he needed to punish. He felt the need to punish because of his relationship with his son. That was the whole point of the movie. It wasn't entitled "The accused" because it doesn't deeply examine the person charged with the murder. Instead the film is exploring the motivations of the men charged with passing judgment on him. One did so because he had issues with his son, another because he was a racist, yet another because he felt it was the quickest way to end the inconvenience of having to sit on a jury. It's a truly excellent film and one of Henry Fonda's best. Another great Henry Fonda film is *The Grapes of Wrath.* ~ 1940 drama A great courtroom drama is *To Kill a Mockingbird.* ~ 1962 starring Gregory Peck And another is *Inherit the Wind.* ~ 1960 starring Spencer Tracy If you want to try something a little more art house then I would suggest two of my favourites by Orson Welles, the first is *Touch of Evil* and the other is *The Trial.* (though it would be hard to react to The Trial). If you want to try truly beautiful foreign language films then I always suggest *Wild Strawberries* by Ingmar Bergman or *Ran* and *Seven Samurai* by Kurosawa.

The point about this film is it shows human nature, and actually to me it shows how frightening it would be to be judged by other humans, humans who have not been trained to think analytically, to only look at the facts and ignore their prejudices and emotions. Another film I recommend is An Inspector Calls. Not the recent version, the 1950s black & white version starring Alastair Sims.

Hitchcock films you can't go wrong. Rear Window, Rope, and North by Northwest are excellent (N by NW is my favorite), for Sci-Fi; there's "The Andromeda Strain" from the 60's, Forbidden Planet (50's),and "Enemy Mine from 1985. As far as comedies go; Walk, Don't Run (60's), Harvey (50's), High Anxiety (70's), What's Up Doc? (60's), Hopscotch (80's). Drama; Great Santini (70's), Frantic (80's), Chinatown (70's), Mirage (60's), Ordinary People (80's), The Verdict (80's).

I've got a few classic movie suggestions for you. "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). Simply put, one of the finest movies ever made. Keep the tissues close by. "On The Waterfront" (1954). Standout performances by Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Lee J. Cobb. The taxi scene alone makes this movie worth watching. "I coulda been a contender!" "Laura" (1944). You'll fall in love with Gene Tierney, too, in this suspenseful film noir classic. "Them!" (1954). The first - and best - of the "big bug' sci-fi movies. Sure, the special effects are a bit laughable now, but it's still an example of sci-fi done right, with a crisp storyline and a stellar cast. "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938). The definitive swashbuckler filmed in glorious technicolor, featuring arguably the perfect cast, story, and score. "Stagecoach" (1939). Mired in obscure, low level "oaters" for ten years, John Wayne was cast in the crucial role of The Ringo Kid by legendary director John Ford over the objections of studio execs. The rest is cinematic history. "The Public Enemy" (1931). Planned as a star-making feature for a particular actor, director William Wellman couldn't help noticing how another actor in a supporting role kept "jumping off the screen" when he watched the dailies. He had them switch roles and made a star out of James Cagney instead. "To Have and Have Not" (1944). Bogie meets Bacall for the first time and sparks fly. "You do know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just pucker up your lips and blow." "The Thin Man" (1934). William Powell and Myrna Loy are fantastic as detective Nick Charles and his wife Nora in the big-screen adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel. One of the best "whodunits" ever written, filmed faithfully by W.S. Van Dyke.

Still probably the best cinematic example of how to pull off a riveting drama in (mainly) a single setting- so glad the film, director Sidney Lumet and screenwriter Reginald Rose received well-deserved Oscar nominations. The entire point of the movie was to show there was a reasonable doubt, not to say the boy was innocent entirely. Maybe he did do it. But the evidence wasn't strong enough. I bet in a six day long trial, anyone would just be tired. And a lot of the jurors let their personal biases get in the way of fair judgement. This movie was an ingenious way to summarize the justice system, and how flawed it really is. Regular people when in court have a false sense of urgency. If evidence is weak, then vote not guilty for reasonable doubt, and another court date will be scheduled. Most likely he was in custody under suspicion. But a normal person would assume "not guilty" means he gets to walk free, out on the streets again, have a nice day bruhahah. If the boy really did do it, then the NEXT court date would have to present stronger evidence. If the boy didn't do it then the NEXT court date would have no choice but to abstain, since the only prosecution they had was in question.
