Yeah for sure, I don't disagree with you man, and that's what this video is for. But like, I look at my KZfaq analytics and literally 90% of my audience is from rich first world countries, and people over here (in "the West") tend to make dumb decisions about how to spend their money, e.g. $1000 on a new phone? Sure. $4 a month on a program that will actually help you learn a language? No way! Better put Duolingo on the phone instead! It's those people I'm talking to, not people in the Middle East.

Exactly, I don't think anybody expects to be holding university lectures in a language they learned strictly through Duolingo. Currently I'm focusing all my language efforts on German, but every morning I do couple Spanish, French and Russian lessons on Duolingo. I've never did any other language content in Spanish besides Duolingo and after an year, I can understand Spanish memes from my friends, I can talk about basic stuff, I can get around in Spanish countries as a tourist and not feel as a total moron when I go out with Spanish only groups. I could never have a fluent conversation, but it's effective to gain the basics, so you can build on it through more fun content such as series, movies and simpler books... And most of all, it's fun, which is subjective, but I had much better time with it than with Busuu, Rosetta or Speakly, since I was actually looking forward to it, not as a chore... And consistency is always king.

I couldn't have said it better myself, I hear people praise Anki as the most important language learning tool since sliced bread, but it's sooo clunky. I tried it for my japanese for a few days; but suddenly making flashcards, importing/exporting vocab decks and learning the program felt like a chore in of itself. And for whatever reason, the words on screen never stuck no matter how many times I went over them. Now I make physical flashcards and use the Leitner system instead; and it works like magic. For whatever reason, physically writing down the vocab, and purposefully choosing the words I feel are useful for me to learn (rather than downloading a pre-made "5000 common words" list) makes it easy to learn and ascertain my 15 new words every day.

just found your channel and went through a couple of vids and subscribed! as an audio nerd I noticed something you can improve on: I found both in the 5 apps video and this one, your mic was clipping at times (the gain is too high making it distort when you speak louder) you can lower your mic gain in your recording phase and raise it later in post without any artefacts (you could also possibly use a compressor on it which would help making the volume of speech more consistent and not bump or go too low between different dynamics, but that is an extra step) however since you videos seems to be mainly conversation based I hope you give audio some more love :)

I’m fairly early on in my journeys to learn French and Mandarin and I am using Duolingo pretty successfully so far, however what I’m also doing along side it is some of what was suggested in this video…I watch movies and programs in these languages and I listen to music in them too, looking at the lyrics in the target language if it’s a video. In addition I joined a worldwide pen pal site and have pen pals whose first language is either French or Chinese and a small amount (so far but will grow) of our correspondence is in those languages. With my Chinese pen pal we exchange audio files so that she can critique my grasping of the tonal elements of the language.

Currently I’m learning Korean and I’ve been using Memrise, Mango, and a Coursea course to learn the language. Originally I learned Spanish from a class for 4 years in high school and was able to get at a B1/B2 level. I have thought of taking a college course for korean but those are astronomically over priced $500 + book per quarter. I’m willing to pay for an app like Memrise because I found the vocab fun to learn and with the native speakers saying the words I now have a reference rather than a robot voice. My problem with mango is that it’s to quick of a pace for myself. I learned a few phrases but then it teaches grammar too quickly.

It has vocabulary, it uses that word in a sentence, it is written in Japanese. But once you flip the card it also has hiragana if you can't read the Kanji or Katakana. Every card has audio. They flip the way they quiz you because sometimes it is just the audio and you have to guess what it is, so it helps you with listening skills. I also like it that it has pictures.

I have Rosetta stone which can get you pretty far in a language as far as grammar goes however it doesn't have a lot of vocabulary so I also used duolingo and an app called hellotalk that let's you speak to people in the language you're learning and I also made sure to look into colloquial speech and watching shows in the language. It's boring but watching shows ment for little kids helps since it's repetitive and they tend to speak slow so it helps you get used to hearing it. I also use google translate a lot, it's extremely useful for when you don't know a word or forget how to spell one, it's not good to use for a lot of full sentences if you want it to be accurate but there's a lot of ways you can use it that can be really helpful.

Thanks for all those recommendations, I will definitely use Forvo as I find English pronounciation very difficult. Good luck for Anki. I remember having a lot of trouble using it at first, but now I am addicted to it. I use it everyday to study English and Japanese. About iTalki, I never considered using it, but you're making me reconsidering it. I'm also wondering. Have you ever used HelloTalk? If so, what are your opinions about it? Oh and be careful, at the beggining you should say "allons-y"instead of "vas-y" . (And personally, I think it's more natural to say "c'est parti" instead) PS: I sent you a message on Facebook a few days ago, but since I'm not sure you're active on it I'll write it here (minus the typos and spelling mistakes lol): Hey ! J'ai découvert ta chaîne KZfaq et je la trouve très intéressante. Personnellement, j'apprends l'anglais et le japonais, et ta chaîne m'a donné de précieux conseils. Je ne connais pas bien ton niveau, donc j'ai essayé d'écrire ce message en français facile. J'espère que tu n'aura pas de soucis à le comprendre. Merci. OK, first, the Vas y thing - "Vas y" is actually something we say in English for this context sometimes, though not very often. Basically, I'm not necessarily even speaking "French" at that moment. A lot of Australians also say "Trezz bien" (pronouncing the S, and we know that it's wrong, it's kind of joke to deliberately mispronounce French). "Allons y" and "c'est parti" are not part of the English vernacular so we would regard that as a bit pretentious (at least when not on a language learning channel). But either way it's a deliberate "misuse" on my part, I've said it in a few videos, it's basically an in-joke with a few people, who said that if I say it then French people will correct me and I replied that when you make legitimate mistakes in videos, almost no one corrects them, but when you say that Duolingo isn't good (basically a fact) then you get corrected by every man and his dog. So the joke was to see how much I would have to say "vas y" before someone "corrected it" and the answer is about 60,000 views and at least 200 comments haha. Also it's a reference to the stock music that I use; I often use a track which the artist named "Vas y". Yeah sorry I don't really check Facebook much. En tous cas, je peux tout comprendre, et si tu veux, tu peux toujours écrire en français.

It's pretty much just because they can't ever get enough bad press in my mind: they've asserted themselves as the number 1 name in language learning and it's crap because it's rubbish. How long ago did you do your French? They also helped me with Swedish but that was before the series of cash grab updates that made the thing stupidly slow. My French is OK and I tried it in French again like 2 months ago and it pissed me off so much, it just sucks and yet they have crowned themselves "THE BEST WAY TO LEARN *insert name of language*". It's a farse IMO.

Hey, you can change the speed on KZfaq in 5% increments (which is very gradual steps) with the built in controls. It’s only available on the web desktop version though, not on mobile app (which only does the 25% increments). I’ve done this while trying to learn to sing songs in my target language to great effect. I start at 65-70% of speed to really get the pronunciation and accent down, then I increase 5% daily until I get to 100%. I think you could do this with mimicking dialogues too.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 4 жыл бұрын
Ha, I only just found that - but I still prefer mine because of the shortcuts. Like going back by 1, 2, 3, 4 or any numbers of seconds has a shortcut. The problem with going too slowly is that it does that stretch thing that messes up the quality. I sometimes do it just for a single syllable or something but not so much for pronunciation. I use it most when transcribing.

i really recommend to watch videos with the subtitles (in your target language), if you only listen to the videos, then you will be missing a lot as Steve Kaufmann says in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frlnnpdiytnaj3U.html (it's in spanish, but it has autogenerated subtitles in english); learning a language is mainly about listening and reading, then, if you did it the right way, you will speak and write because you have already learned how and when to use the words. Find strategies that you enjoy, it's the key for learning anything, its not this or that app, its about the way you learn, we all learn in different ways, so if you feel that something is working for you then use it!

here's the thing. duolingo is good for parents wanting their young kids to learn a language. its format, characters and lessons are perfect for someone young already not super advanced in their fist language. however, for anyone over 10 trying to learn a language, it isn't great. and i say this as someone who is older and started spanish on there. as others have said before, its lessons can be useful but after a while are very repetitive and boring, teaching you phrases that you like likely never use, such as '¿tú comes manzanas?' (do you eat apples?). it's good for learning singular words, but not actual phrases that you would use irl on the daily given the opportunity to.

I'm currently using Duolingo because I don't have any money income as a student. If I get money I save it for my driving licence which is really expensive. I hope I'll be able to use other apps later or maybe attend an online course or something. What helped me a lot with Duolingo is to read the comments. Duo doesn't explain word order or why they use specific cases with some words. But in the comments there often are natives or people who already speak the language who can answer questions, explain stuff or provide helpful links to websites with good information and explanation. So my tip would be. Read the comments. I've learned more from the comments than from the actual Duolingo sentences.
