“Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” “Aladdin” stars Will Smith as the larger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud as the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards. The film is produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich with Marc Platt and Kevin De La Noy serving as executive producers. Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and two new songs written by Menken and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.The film, which was shot on practical stages in London and on location amidst the stunning desert vistas of Jordan, has a talented creative team helping to bring Agrabah to life, including: director of photography Alan Stewart, production designer Gemma Jackson and costume designer Michael Wilkinson.

Ali was never intended to be FROM Ababwa in the original. Ababwa was his surname. If he was supposed to be from Ababwa in the original, he would have been addressed as "Prince Ali *of* Ababwa". That's why Aladdin doesn't give Jafar an answer when he asks, "Just WHERE did you say you were from?" Aladdin answers, "Oh, much further than you've traveled, I'm sure," because he never said where he was from. So the question being fixed isn't "where is Ababwa", it's "where is Prince Ali from". I'm sorry to quibble so much and I don't mean to be rude or confrontational, I've just been a hardcore fan of the franchise since it first released when I was 8 and I've been part of the online fandom for 20 years. You know how it goes with fandom passion. lol

Not to bash what you're saying, but it does go along with how modern the original Aladdin was since no one started using surnames until 1066 in Normandy (England). Middle Eastern rulers would be known by first their name and where they come from. Also, Ababwa could also be referenced to a ruler's father's name if they want to be realistic. So there are several ways to realistically interpret it. But not introducing the place where you come from could be considered rude when you intend to court a sultan's daughter. So I believe that's why in the newer movie they called Ababwa a location. Not to say that the newer Aladdin isn't modern as well.

however in the movie when aladdin asked what his wish would be, genie answered he wanted to be free, just like other people and travel around the world (sorry if i was mistaken) and genie grant wishes just as how he himself interpret it. just as the narrator in this video said, when jafar asked to be the most powerful being, genie interpreted as negative as possible and made jafar a genie, and when aladdin wished genie to be free, he did just exactly what he had in mind about a free being: human.

@@gabriellagonzales4363 Rubbing the lamp while making the wish wasn't required in the original animated version. In animation, Aladdin was able to trick Genie by playing into his "ego" Genie: "I'm an all-powerful Genie" Aladdin: "Huh, I bet you can't even get us out of here." Whereas in live-action, Genie appeared to have a certain "low expectation" about human-kind. He just wants to get the whole "make-your-three-wishes-and-be-done-with-it" routine ended. Which is how Aladdin is able to trick the Genie into escaping the cave. Genie: "The more wishes you have, the more you want." Aladdin: "That's not me." Genie: "We'll see..."
@markedred

Yeah to add to that is the "Friend Like Me" sequence -- the first genie couldn't wait to tell Aladdin how powerful he is. -- the 2019 genie started out simple, and only went to the big number when he saw how shocked Aladdin still was. He wasn't really overexcited, he just wants to get the whole wish thing over with.

One change I really liked was freeing the genie. In the original 1992 Aladdin, the genie is free from his binds but still retains all of his power. Basically if he were evil like Jafar, he’d be allowed to destroy and conquer anything he wants without the restrictions genies have. In the live action version, when he’s freed, he loses his power and becomes human. This makes a lot more sense for the rules of being a genie.

I don understand why Aladin had to make a wish to be resued when drowing .. All the genie had to do was move him, which he did many times like the time he made Aladin dance or when he moved him closer to Jasmine. The Genie even fixed the carpet without it asking for it .

Genie moving him was to help him with his prince wish and was him being nice. as for saving him, that falls under a different situation and he technically wasint supost to. finally, him fixing carpet and undoing some things was because he felt bad as most of it was his fault so he was fixing the mistake free of charge. at least that's how I see it.

@@redwelch7547 I would agree too, dancing and the map situation all fell under the first wish, I would say that the first wish should have given him basic Royalty knowledge on the practices surrounding all things Royal. Fixing the Carpet I would say was a personal thing, Genie and Carpet are friends, there is no gain other than it's his oldest friend, since the "wish" requires verbal contracts, there can be no abuse. I do however think that the 2nd wish water scene is still BS, Aladdin is unable to actually make the wish, the contract sounds very suspicious and I'd have to pause to read it, but I don't think it counts.

When you say "source material" do you mean the original animated film or the actual story? If you meant the film then yes, but if you meant the story then no. The story of Aladdin that the movie is loosely based on is called Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp and was not originally part of the 1001 Arabian Nights. It takes place in China and the evil sorcerer lives in Africa. He's not an orphan, he and his mother are poor, he's a pervert, and does some pretty terrible things in order to get the princess. Three wish rule doesn't exist, he treats the genie pretty horribly and is all around a terrible person.

All the other things mentioned in this list are not mistakes or mistakes they didn’t fix! And they actually managed to ADD some major plot holes in the remake that didn’t even exist in the original! 😂 Unbelievable. Like, how the hell was the genie able to make Carpet end up in the end of the world while being Jafars servant? So you can’t take someone/something out of the water without your master wishing for it, but you can do magic on Carpet so it ends up in the end of the world behind your masters back?? And when Jasmine takes the lamp from Jafar and then they’re chased by Iago, there was several times during that scene when they (Aladdin and company) had the lamp, when you have the lamp why don’t you just rub it? And you would think that during “A whole new world” they didn’t visit Greece China etc because that wouldn’t be reasonable to use in live action form, but no, because then they did that in the end of the movie anyway when Carpet flies with Aladdin from the end of the world back to Agrabah. And before Jafar pushes Aladdin into the water he says something like “if you have the lamp you will come shooting out of the water and if you don’t have it you’ll just die, either way I’ll find out”, that made no sense. Even if Aladdin does have the lamp, the only way the lamp can save him in that moment is if it is physically with him! And the genie uses his powers to fix Carpet in the end without anyone wishing for it! It’s like people were high and not thinking at all while making this movie.

The calm, cool, and inhumanly collected live action Jafar was able to think right, not being completely batshit insane. So, rather than not knowing that being a genie would’ve caused him to suffer a genie’s fate, 2019 Jafar knew what he was doing. Albeit, he knew too much of what he was doing. She could have easily picked it up and whisper “I wish for jafar to disappear or never have been born or *something*” I thought the rule was whoever had the lamp control the genie. So she had the lamp- she controls the genie. Even same thing with Eago. I’m confused at why he didn’t think to use a few wishes for himself before giving it to jafar.

The grey area explanation doesn’t correct the issue. Genie created the document in the moment and signed it with Aladdin’s hand, while he was incapable of consenting to the wish, therefore, genie STILL technically stole that wish from Aladdin, only now we are simply capable of making a longer argument. So we care so much about realism that we have to make the magic carpet ride cover less area.......yet Aladdin and Jasmine have no seat belts on (most likely because it wouldn’t “look as pretty”) even though “realistically” they would’ve fallen off ages ago? This is the problem with the obsession with photorealism and realism. We lose all the great things in the name of realism, yet it’s clear that they themselves are willing to compromise realism for the sake of aesthetics. There’s nothing wrong with photorealism within itself, but acting like having photorealism and more esoteric realistic elements (without thinking through the multiple plot holes and lack of logic that comes from trying to address them) automatically makes a film better or great *is* a problem.

The inaccuracy isn't the punishment (under Sharia law theft was punishable by amputation), it's the application of said punishment. The merchant wouldn't be within his right to amputate her then and there. In the 1992 Aladdin, Jasmine being denied due process (especially for such a gruesome punishment) was not only historically inaccurate (you had to meet a heap of requirements to be amputated, many required a judge), but culturally insensitive as it creates the image of a culture where amputation can be done lawfully on a whim.
