Bears are not made out of concrete
@austinchasteeny
@austinchasteeny Жыл бұрын
You can kill bears with just about anything, and in fact most encounters of the surprise attack nature where a firearm is involved are with smaller caliber, more common self defense cartridges like 9mm. And most of them survive those attacks. But armed with that knowledge, would I want to be caught out in Alaska with a 9mm if I could have brought a guide/lever gun? Not if I thought I had a high chance of seeing a Kodiak. Likewise, this concrete test does not equivocate what a 12g slug vs WLNGC 45-70 would do on soft targets, nor does it account for range, where both drop off substantially but the +p 45-70 here has the same muzzle energy at 100m as the 12g has at the muzzle. And the 12g? It's lost half it's energy by 100m. Up close the 12g has some real knockdown power, but at any real hunting distance the 45-70 maintains many many feet of soft target penetration. (Which for 1k lbs moose is a plus) Just food for thought; If I were out hunting moose, but thought I'd have a chance to see a big bear, I'd want a cartridge that could do both reliably and accurately at all potential ranges.

Hardcast bullets generally have a high antimony content. Antimony is the cheapest way for bullet companies to harden the lead. The problem with high antimony alloys is it creates a brittle lead so unlike a pure lead bullet, or one that is hardened by using tin, that is malleable and expands or deforms after impact the antimony bullet will chip and break apart.

You ought to mow the grass short around your target area, and maybe put down a tarp to have a better chance of finding the bullets or slugs. 12 ga. slug is probably the more practical round, as more people are likely to have a 12 ga. vs a 4570... And it gives you the option of different rounds.

The results are very similar to the .30-06 vs .300 win mag test. All four shattered the first block but did not touch the second. My guess is that when the first web is cracked that it wedges apart the sides of the block and cracks the other two webs. The three webs really are not independent of each other, because they are connected by the sides. Concrete is very strong in compression, but not in tension stress or shear stress. It would be interesting to turn the blocks 90 dgrees and see if the bullets get through the first block to the second, when there is only two walls they need to penetrate. This is a very interesting test because both projectiles are heavy with a lot of energy, but have drastically different sectional densities. I bet you would see a significant difference in penetration in the paper plate test, or in ballistic gel. The key points to penetration are velocity, sectional density, and bullet construction. Good video. I like your tests and have subscribed, but to make it a truly great video, include as much data as possible such as bullet weight, velocity, and design. PS. Yes I did take differential equations and newtonian physics in college and my job title ends with the word engineer.

I have lots of experience with 7.62 AP rounds with tungsten penetrators. In the above test, they would usually punch through the first three cinder blocks, or about 8- 9 layers. But a hardened penetrator AP round sucks for deer hunting. Just makes a small clean hole through the torso without dumping much energy into the tissue. But a turned tungsten penetrator in a 12 ga sabot would be freakin awesome to demonstrate.

That piece of copper was a most likely the gas check, previously crimped to the bottom of the slug. The bullet probably bounced out somewhere.
@thewatcher611
@thewatcher611 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the gas check is needed when you start shooting at velocities of around 1400 fps and above. The idea that most cartridges are going to be operating under such high pressures by then, that the powder combustion event can bypass the plain lead. Which means you have molten lead spraying at your barrel, thus leading occurs. Just for those why may not have known. Also, hard cast lead doesn't mean it's hard like steel. It's just harder than pure lead, and can hit harder before it deforms.

I've always been a fan of the 12 ga. foster slugs for deer, groundhogs and inanimate objects.. When I was a kid, every nearby farm had their own dump, with two within a half-mile of our house. We killed more than our share of old TV sets with 12 ga. buckshot and slugs (this was back in the late 50's and early 1960's); or as I like to say, way back in that last century. The only problem was those slugs and buckshot hurt like the dickens when fired from a 12 ga. single shot shotgun with a plastic (Rynite) stock. But we was young, dumb and considered ourselves immortal!! Anyway, I love your video's and have watched quite a few. I was very surprised that the 45-70 stopped so short, although I thought your estimate was a little optimistic.

Well now that was an interesting video and I thought you were either joking or very over-optimistic about the penetration of the 45-70 hard cast bullet.

Love this comparison, always wondered how the two rounds compared. I still love the 45-70 cause it not only broke the first block, but pulverized that block to dust. Also, I’ve hit some big deer with both rounds (different weapons used during different hunts), and the 45-70 seemed to cause more devastation than a 12 gauge slug. I own a dedicated 12 gauge slug gun, and it’s performance and accuracy doesn’t come close to the 45-70. Not only that, when confronted by a bear or big wolf which weapon would you want to have in your hands? Thanks again, Bill from Minnesota.

The performance in this test of a solid brass or copper .45-70 would be much different. That would be interesting to see compared to a brenneke slug.

Genuinely honest review. That's cool you didn't edit out your predictions. I did think that 4570 was gonna do better. I'm curious if you would get the same results if you ran the test a few times. Thanks for the video

Feeding the algorithm, as classic cool as the .45-70 is, I’ve gotta say that a good 12 gauge will probably serve you better through sheer versatility unless you need the .45-70’s range, and then there are rifled slug barrels to cover that application as well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The 45-70 exploded the cinder block into much smaller fragments than the 12 guage did, but the penitration results were ruffly the same. I'd like to see you compare a 308 to a 30-06 on the cinder blocks.

Well, at about 2:00 you asked us to put our guesses in the comments and I honestly don't think that .45-70 will go anywhere as far as you're saying. I paused the video to write this. Let's see what happens.... I'll comment some more after the test. I feel like I should dim the lights and be eating popcorn, lol. Edit - Ok, I'm glad I took a chance on this one. I thought the .45-70 would go further than it did but I didn't think it would go through all of those cinder blocks. This was definitely an interesting video. More importantly, you are looking healthier and rested. God bless.

Oddly enough, the 45/70 may have done better if the velocity was lower. I think the lower velocity actually helped the softer slug.

I know that .45-70 is a beast, but when you predicted it reaching the water jug, my expression went to 😵‍💫 After watching some of your other cinder block tests, I thought no way. I did think it would get into that second block though. Those big ole bullets seem to drop off their energy much quicker than those faster, smaller bullets. Was interesting to see that .45-70 pulverize that block though.

This was a good comparison. But, it all boils down to physics. I knew the slug would go deeper through the cement because it's 1 ounce! The energy is sustained longer.

You should have used some 3 inch mags for the 12 gauge. Maybe Brenneke slugs. I would choose the 12 gauge for almost everything if not every thing. And don't discredit the 20 gauge either. Good video!
