In this video I'll share the 12 survival items (and focus areas) that I make sure I bring with me every time I travel. I make small modifications to my existing bug-out bag to ensure I stay prepared - even when I am flying.
What bug-out bag modifications do YOU make when traveling? Share in the comments below!

One of the things I keep in my preps are glue sticks, I can use my lighter to melt them. It gives me more options for repairs.

I've traveled to over 40 countries and one of the things I do prior to boarding my plane is to visit the airport's currency exchange location. I try to get a few of my country's destinations currency before I board the plane so I can have something on hand in case the currency exchange location of my destination is closed. Or in some cases, I already have a few from previous travels and I make sure I bring that along. From my experience, there were times when I reached my destination and the currency exchange is closed at the airport. My other must - have on my carry-on is bug spray. Whether I'm in Europe or Asia, mosquitoes love me. My grandmother used to say it's because I'm so sweet 😄 Thank you so much for this informative channel.

Nice pack. I’d suggest a single walled aluminum cup to boil your water for your freeze dried meals. I’d also add some tinder and fire starters. Great video and reminder that we prepare for all of those “what if” scenarios

Airline employee here: if you check a firearm, be sure to give yourself plenty of extra time at the airport because there is a hand screening process done by TSA that is more involved than just sending your bag down the belt. If you do not declare your firearm, you may be fined, and at minimum, expect that your bag will be pulled by TSA and rerouted to you later as a result. The firearm must be in a locked case, and you can carry no more than 11 lbs of ammunition. Gun must also be unloaded. For the multi tool - you may want to put this item in a checked bag. I could see TSA flagging it. Also, any of your items with a lithium ion battery should be carried on (think power banks, laptops, etc). They can catch fire, and it’s much easier to put out a fire in the cabin than under the plane. 😳

THANK YOU! This is so helpful for many of our members on here. I've heard horror stories where people missed their flights because they underestimated how much time it would take check in their firearm.

Items hanging on the outside of your checked bag can also get caught up on the conveyor system, and is why i arrived home on Christmas eve in Montreal with all my kids presents stuck to a ramp in Vancouver

For communication can I suggest a whistle. Small, lightweight, flight friendly and useful to signal for assistance. My son is going skiing next weekend so I will be giving him my whistle to take on the slope. Also love the ‘colour of prepping, on your bags, going to get some of these, although my fire kit is in a waterproof case. (Obviously highlighted in orange).

Hi friend! Darn you can quite see it in my thumbnail but I have a metal small whistle that hangs from my emergency bivvy along with a portable compass. Great minds think alike! I went with a metal whistle, do you have any whistle recommendations you prefer?

@@MuthaPrepper Hi lovely, mine is black, not sure of the make but very discrete. It’s so good to see a female prepper, most are male and I think women are naturally born preppers. We carry all sorts of things around just in case the kids need it. Keep up the good work. Xx

Just something to think about, you should always pack more than one source of fire making items, pack the matches and farro rod along with the lighter. Packing some char cloth and a stick or two of fatwood is also a plus. I'm afraid the bivy you have isn't a good item, they don't do what they are supposed to do and can actually rob you of body heat. You would want to have a good nylon type tarp and bank line to make a shelter. It can be modified in different ways to suit your situation. If you bring a compass and maps, you need to know how to use them, otherwise they doesn't do much for you and can get you lost. REI offers classes on how to use them. Bring a stainless single layer 32 oz size water bottle and nesting cup so you can boil water over a fire, and bring a cotton bandana so you can use it to filter the water.

Great video! Two things: 1. you cannot check your portable battery. Lithium ion batteries need to be carried on due to risk of fire; 2. Pepper spray is approved for check-on by the feds, but it isn’t necessarily approved by your individual airline. Check with your airline before you try to pack the pepper spray. Last time I checked American Airlines, it was a no go to travel with period. 😢 Thanks again for some great ideas.

Next is water.... I settled on the Be Free filter by Katadyn and for many reasons. First it is an open filter I can wash out. Directiins say just agitate. Next it's super compact. It has measurements on the bag. So, this comes with a 1L silicone bag actually made my Hydropack. Hydropack also makes thicker bladder bottles with attachment points to pair with this wider mouth filter. 'Seeker' is the model name and they come in 2L and 4L. They compact down tiny and are feather weight. The beauty here is the ability to carry allot of water and even make a wash up station by hanging the bladder up. Can also use as gravity feed to fill containers. I got a nylons packable bottle sling that weighs next to nothing to carry my Be Free in. So there is no reaching for bottles in my pack or whatever. It's like having a modern day canteen. Simple. And this packs down so small you can fit it all in a jacket pocket or waiste pack. So my next must have is a waterproof waiste pack/shoulder sling bag. I got a great one from 4Monster but there are so many kinds. I like ones with a few pockets, front, back, inside, atleast, and outer attachment points. That way I can have my ID and paperwork separate, and one quick access to my medication. What I pack- In order of priority for me. Gear: Without light I am done so...#1 My NU25 headlamp with shock cord band by Nitecore. It is rechargeable and has a load of features include red lamps. From their ad... "Max Output of 400 Lumens with a 70-Yard throw. Equipped with spotlight and floodlight with red light. Ultra-light dual-band design is lightweight, reflective, and glows in the dark. Three light sources (white, high CRI, and red) Charges via USB-C. The NU25 has a built-in 650mAh rechargeable battery that can achieve a maximum runtime of 45 hours on its lowest setting. Charges to full in only one and a half hours. A power indicator tells you when it's time to charge while lockout mode prevents accidental activation. 1.59 ounces." $36.00. I have an Olite H1R front facing flash light, one extra Olite battery, it's magnetic charging cord and an Olite battery charging cord. This ensures I never go without lite as long as my solar panels in my backpack work atleast. I can keep switching things out. All this fits in the palm of my hand. I store this and more in a little Chumbs zip pouch/wallet type pouches. In one, I keep extra memory and a micro mini reader in that too. Next I have a slim 10,000 mAh battery bank with the cords attached to the unit and has folding wall plug. I plan on getting the super slim, super poweful Nightcore battery next. They are over 100 dollars but people say well worth it. I have my water filter bottle sling so I usually transfer my Elete electrolyte dropper bottle from my waiste pack into the pocket of the sling. Dehydration kills. These drops are easy to use. I carry a locking folding knife similar to yours. Benchmade, very lite and reliable. I have a Leatherman Squirt mini multi tool with scissors, orange BIC lighter without tape on it because when the lighter runs out, the tape is wasted. I keep my gorilla tape and Leuko blister tape on a plastic card with two stainless big eyed sewing needes taped in between them and some heavy weight thread wound up around that. A cool mod for a lighter is to wrap waxed candle wick around it. This then acts like a candle to save your fuel. Very cool for a mini BIC especially. I have this as my primary, and the regular BIC as a back up now. I have a case for that. Still in my waiste pack.... I carry a SWAT T 3 in one band, super slim which is a tourniquet, compression bandage, wrap. Everyone should carry these, especially for kids and pets. I pack a few 4×4 non stick gause, Steri strips, some sticky wrap I wrap up more flat instread of round, a skin seal for burns, a few good quality waterproof premedicated bandaids in different sizes and atleast two packets each of triple antibiotic, burn gell, and hydrocortisone, alcohol wipes. And a few 'add water' dime sized towels. I have a one use mini Super Glue. I have small packets of Blood Stop and Curad blood stopping gauze squares, the size of handy wipes really. I have a tiny travel toothbrush, a teeny container of 'Dent Temp' for fillings, a small tube of Ambersol for tooth pain, a travel Visine, and I carry a small or mini victorinox in my pocket that has tweezers and a toothpick which helps with allot with fixing things. I carry screws for my specific glasses and a tiny screw driver not much bigger then a tooth pick that fits the screws. I have a neck lanyard I wear that has a good, slim whistle. Looks like jewelry really. That's common sense... Again this is NOT my main kit just in my waiste pack. And incase I get seperated from my pack. Meds: 2 each or one full course or dose of- Immodium, Decolax, 800 mg IBU, 80 mg Asprin, Tylenol fever, Dramamine, and Benedril. I have these seperated in 1"×1" thick mil teeny zip bags, like for beads but food grade I got on Amazon cheap, i made small labels, then I put this all in a bit larger one. Without all the packaging this all fits in a tiny bag like less then the palm of a small hand. I make up these for every bag i carry. I have 7 days of my personal medications. I also have two activated Charcoal capsules for detoxing from bad water, food. I carry a pack of vitamins I take to include high D3 ith K2, High Absorbancy C, Zinc, Magnesium, a B blend, etc...enough for 3 days and I have two packs of Emergen-C Immune + drink mixes as well. This is good to pop one in with water when any stress hits. I have a mini Write In the Rain Field notebook (credit card sized) and mini space pen, and mini sharpie...the notebook as my place to keep all my information. ICE, phone numbers, contacts, accounts, passwords, directions, instructions I may need like for water pure tabs, etc...I have 10 Aquapure tabs in with my meds. I have a wallet sized first aid- medical emergency card with basic instructions. I have a credit card sized magnifying glass, an ICE card itself to pass onto medics. I have 2 white cotten handkerchiefs and no one thinks of these. First to prefilter water into my Be Free filter. The hankerchief is dye free. Second use for medical. I keep the other to wash up, wash my face, blow my nose, whatever. Bandanas are good but for other things because of the chemical dyes and detergants you don't want in water, on wounds, in eyes, etc.... I have about 25 feet of Kevlar cord which is super small and stong. I can make a shelter or tie whatever. I have a One Wind rain poncho/tarp that has attachment points to make a small shelter. I usually wear a neck buff and always have running gloves. I dress in layers. With my phone I have a built in stand on the case and I have descent corded ear buds also in my waiste pack. I also have a small GMRS radio I could attach to the waiste pack. GMRS is something people should look into. I got one with GPS and data features. Text. An investment but worth it. No test is required but you must register and get your handle. You can do this online You Tube has tons of videos. Mine has a radio and NOAA and USBC charging. And last I have a very small Kleen Kantern bottle I can attach to my waisteack as well. This for boiling in. I have a small Sunto compass with the mirror, this was expensive because of the tiny size for a quality compass that has declanation, and glows in the dark and and with that a bit of trail marking tape all neat in one tiny square. I have an orange bandanna for signaling tie onto my waiste pac k I have a very decent 4 inch ferro rod, showers sparks, a small Live fire tin, which is a fire starter. I carry Burts Bees chapstick, and a small stick of Sunblock or Zinc. I have FOAM brand soap sheets, a antimicrobial 'pee' rag very popular now called the Kula cloth, works well to keep clean. I have a small folding Toaks titanium spork. I do have a super small pepper spray I clip on my wastepack. Sometimes I bring Weightlifters protein powder to make a shake on the fly and a power bar. Those fit in my bottle sling. This really works wonders for a one day fix. I carry atleast two Chicken Boulon cubes in with my medical stuff. Usually some chaga tea, green tea, calming tea. Something with medicinal benefits

I travelled more than 35 years to 98 countries on business with leisure and I think this is overkill for many items cited, e.g, , multi tools, walkie-talkie ( not legal in some countries). The medical kit is too much. For medical, get a travel medical insurance & familiarize with locations of clinics/hospitals (except for headache pill, and some over the counter med, I never used the rests even in Moscow, Dacca or Paris, not even once!🙂Considering the recent significant increase in baggage charges on airplanes, I'll be very conscious about carrying a bug out bag on foreign trips, even domestic.

My actual pack is more focused on shelter, I have a tiny Hummingbird double Hammock and its tiny tree straps and it's tarp/tent...A Bearz beach blankt I use constantly to sit places, a super lite down blanket/poncho, sleeping bag by Get Out Gear, love that, a Snugpack Special forces Bivvy that cocoons and zips in me and everything water and windproof to sleep, all very small.... All this packs super tiny really, super lite and stuff I use regularly. Especially on vacation. We camp allot. For clothes I pack rain gear, ultra lite jacket and pants, yoga pants, a tank or T, or sunshirt now usually, good socks, a packble puffy, winter-packable puffy down pants and tiny down puffy slippers, all so tiny... Food, usually Mountainhouse, a Toaks 750 with bail, with the tiny BRS stove and smallest can of fuel or I have a tiny Firebox as well with grill top in titatium i use mostly. I have the Mora Garburg as my primary knife, the pocket Silky saw which is totally awsome, a premade ridgeline, so more cord. A small piece of mosquito net to drape over my hammock, or make a day shelter at the park, weighs ounces, super lite, you could not get by without in spring most places. My IFAC is super tiny as well, just additional compressed gauze, bigger pack of Blood stop compressed gauze, and other super light weight closures. Watch Ubun Preper he has an exceptional list, and I have a tiny spiral bound waterproof medical guide, hard to find now. And we definately use this stuff allot so.... Your flash light alone is probably 1/4 of the weight maybe half of my 'essential' EDC gear. That huge stuff is definately not nessary. The huge headlamp, big radios, huge compass omg. Weight will injure people probably quicker then having almost nothing at all... especially those not used to walking or who have medical conditions they may not even know they have. Bug out means stress from the start, so... And a key is distributed weight between an ultro light weight yet comfortable pack, a chest rig maybe for guys, and a waiste pack for sure. A vest! Like a mesh fishing vest for summer. Another issue is if things are too heavy people won't carry them, especially out on vacation. A big pack at a hotel will do no good in trying to get back there. Think ultralight, watch through hikers on You Tube, thats what i I did... Good luck.

If you're flying with carry-on luggage only, think a little about what is allowed per TSA. A P-38 can opener, a Knipix Mini Pliers, and trauma shears (all under 6 inches) will handle almost any chores that you can do with a multitool. Keep the trauma shears in your FAK, the P-38 on your key ring, and the Mini Pliers with the sillcock key. You should be good to go.
