Several years ago I built a water feature for our back yard. I used stones I had dug up from a little excavation I had done for the waterfall. I made it about four feet high and so it would fall into a small pool. The water would flow from there by a little stream to another small pool sitting a little lower than the upper pool. Watching yours and others videos about building water features, I see some mistakes I made. I didn't backfill the liner enough in places along the stream bed and didn't remove enough grass along the sides. The grass wound up growing over the sides and into the stream causing excess water loss. Turned out pretty nice and looked fairly natural. But a few years ago I added some river and pond pebbles. Then started having algae growing in and have had to continually pull it out. It's a hair or string like algae. Not a big problem, just had to keep scooping it out. It's about like a clog of hair in a sink drain. Yuk. lol. Good video and very nice waterfall you guys made.

Ralph I have watched this several times and I learn something each time, especially when I read your answers in the comments. I like the 'bib' method you use and your explanation is very good! I also like how you have large rocks and gravel outside the spillway; that is different than I've seen before. I know my deer will want to drink from the one I build and that will give them a place to stand w/o injuring the liner or my built up mound (they love to climb mounds of dirt). I saw that you used a 4-8 pump and I was curious what the head was on this 12' feature. This is the BEST video I have watched and I have seen a lot of them!

@pondscapesaz
@pondscapesaz 2 жыл бұрын
The pump vault should be installed at either side of the excavation for the aquablox. I try to put it on the same side as where we put the waterfall spillway but it doesn’t always work out that way. I don’t like the pump vault at the end or in front of the stream because it takes up more space and is harder to hide. Thanks for watching 👍

Wow, very natural. Was there a reason the soil was not compacted or excavated and replaced with stone under the large boulders at the highest spot to prevent them sinking in?
@pondscapesaz
@pondscapesaz Жыл бұрын
We do compact as we build up our elevations. Usually I use 1/4”minus as it compresses very tight and doesn’t settle.
@billboswell4509
@billboswell4509 Жыл бұрын
Good to know. We are scraping away the topsoil then using washed 3/4 stone and compacting in 6" layers under 8-10 boulders of half a ton each.

Hey Ralph, you told me previously on another job that I commented on, about the why you need to do bib lining that it depend on the situation, am I understanding that on this particular job that instead of trying to achieve the right level of each ( bassins or levels ) as you call them, whit the dirt underneath the liner by flipping on and off till you achieve the desired level it give you more control the way you did on this job? What will be the disadvantage of having the water going to the gravel instead knowing that you will have gravel over the bib liner...Thanks in advance for this response.
@pondscapesaz
@pondscapesaz 2 жыл бұрын
Raymond I like using this technique because it gives me more flexibility with my rock selections. There could absolutely be a disadvantage if you don’t do a good job of sealing the levels with your foam and liner/fabric. Inevitably water will leak through each level ( because the foam is just a water diverter, not a sealer ) but it is not a problem as it passes through the gravel then hits the liner and rolls downward into the vault to be put back in circulation. If there is excessive leaking due to poor bib sealing then you will have a situation where the amount of water rolling over the falls is less than desired and you potentially have a high volume of water in motion that is not seen because it is passing through the gravel instead of over the top of the waterfalls. Great question!
@davidjamesellis99
@davidjamesellis99 Жыл бұрын
@@pondscapesaz I am so thankful for people like you that do these videos. I have learned so much from yall. I do have a question because I am confused about why you use the "bib liners". Maybe I am confused. It is my understanding that you have the underlayment against the ground, then the liner, then you have your stone placed along with gravel for the stream bed. Then it looks like you put the bib and then another layer of gravel. If I am understanding this correctly, why do you need the bib? What is the difference between the lower layer of gravel and the top layer? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos. I know it takes a lot of time and intentionality to do them.
@pondscapesaz
@pondscapesaz Жыл бұрын
@@davidjamesellis99 thank you for the kind words. You are correct about the order of materials for the bibbing process. The reason we do this technique is we have more freedom with the rock work when creating waterfalls. Instead of flipping the liner and backfilling with dirt which eats up liner length we do the bibs that allow a wide canvas to build on.
