I recently moved out of San Diego as our landlord sold our house and we had to move. However, moving to Murrieta which is about an hour away from San Diego is nice too and cheaper as we managed to get a big two story house for rent in Murrieta for only about $3000 a month which is not too bad compared to San Diego whereas San Diego, you’d be paying that much for a small shack. Lol 😂

The older I get the more I prioritize community over climate. No matter how nice the sun and beaches are, you will not be happy if you are lonely. Due to the high cost of living, San Diego is a revolving door. Many people come to "live it up" for a bit only to move away later (especially once they have kids). As soon as you make a solid group of friends, they move away and you have to start over.

The happiest person on the planet about the COL in San Diego...our children are priced out of owning a home here or renting for that matter, less they are from a wealthy family, inherit a home or we live on top of each other. IF you bought a home in the early 2000's consider yourselves very lucky/blessed.

I am very lucky and blessed to be living out here in SD. I started living out here in the late 2000 as an Active Marine. When I got out in 2001, I decided to make SD my official home. It was a struggle with no family or support but I was determined to stay here, by all means. Even if I had to stay in my car. When I say I was blessed, 2010 I was married to a beautiful wife from my home town and we decided to purchase our first home in SD. The prices for housing is so crazy here now, I cannot believe we currently own a home that is worth a 3 quarter of a million dollars! I wouldn't imagine paying that much for my particular home. So yes, buying a home in SD is overpriced but there are people out there that would pay that price sadly.

Murrieta is a little cheaper than San Diego, but still pricey because it’s still California. However, not as crazy expensive as San Diego. Lol My brother, however, moved out of San Diego back in 2016 with his family and now lives in Oklahoma as he is a now a police officer with Oklahoma City. He said everything is much cheaper out there than California, and he said it was easier getting into the police academy there than in San Diego.

Can you please consider doing a series of videos about the neighborhoods that are next to Trolley stations? I don't drive and would love to consider moving to SD, but it seems like you can only live there with a car, so I'd love to see what the neighborhoods are like if you relied solely on taking the Trolley to get around (work, groceries, etc.)

A lot of people take the trolley and bus in San Diego! We have a pretty good system, and you can get almost anywhere that you need to. But if you can afford a car, then driving is definitely the way to go since a 20 minute car ride, could take 1.5 hours or more by public transit. I'm scared of driving so I still take public transit to get to school and work. On the bus and trolley, it'll mostly be people from Tijuana or people from lower to lower middle class areas of California, trying to get to work, going grocery shopping, or going to shopping malls. There are also a lot of students taking public transit since we have a bunch of schools. Mostly people trying to mind their own business. Ngl, there are a lotttt of sketchy people that ride the bus and trolley as well. They usually just go around yelling nonsense, just don't pay attention to them. The closer you get to Downtown San Diego, the sketchier the people. There's also been an increase of homeless people, and they're everywhere, but they tend to gather in Downtown more. On the blue line, San Ysidro up until H street are the safest. Anything after 24th street, up until America Plaza, or maybe Washington St, is pretty sketchy. I'd completely avoid walking around Barrio Logan, 12th&Imperial, Park&Market, 5th Avenue, and City College. I'd avoid the Orange Line as well. In the Green Line, it starts to get nicer the closer you get to Mission Valley and Fashion Valley, which are the nicer malls. At the end of the Blue Line you get to another really nice, bougie mall in La Jolla. I hope this helps!

Drive, take a lunch and enjoy!

Another rent factor: building a small 500sqft backyard granny flat to rent out, which would add to the city's rental supply, starts at $300,000. You can buy a proper house anywhere else in the country for that price. I am a SD homeowner and have a spacious backyard. I wish building small ADUs would be more affordable for homeowners - and renters.

we almost moved to San Diego in 2017 but we decided to go to Orlando, what held me back were the housing prices and taxes I just read an article if you make 100 grand in Orlando you would have to make 150 grand in San Diego to live the same lifestyle, Orlando taxes are cheaper but they get you in toll roads, and the heat is unbearable in the summer, with that said I love to vacation in San Diego and hope to go back soon.

Fantastic video, you pretty much nail most of the reasons! For anyone thinking about moving here, DONT, you would be basically paying high prices for the weather. There is no point to purchase a small 2 bedroom house for $600,000 just for you to enjoy the weather. Plus people in San Diego are weird, and extremely flaky. San Diego is perfect for those people that are: outdoorsy, heavily religious, rich, and extremely superficial.

It's not just San Diego it's the whole state of California and my rent is so high here is that the state and the counties and the cities continue to increase the property taxes and add bonds like the city of Tracy which makes your property tax bill go way high and so if you have a rental you have to increase the rent each year to keep up with what the state the counties and the cities are doing with property taxes so look at them because they are the ones who are creating the homelessness and for other older people for all fixed income we cannot keep up with what they are doing especially the cities

Sprouts is so cheap because they underpay all the employees
@bw1955
@bw1955 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of employers in SD pay their employees less than similar positions in more affordable areas of the country. My theory is that it’s the insane cost of the overhead (building, utilities, etc.) and they’d rather keep customers happier than employees.

The real REASON why it's expensive? Taxes, government regulations, private interests having a hold on the public officials, lack of natural resources. California in general is expensive because our government gives away a lot of "free" stuff which comes out of the taxpayers' pockets. Owning a small business here is tough, we want to make enough to keep afloat but we don't want to make too much otherwise we'd be taxed at a higher percentage. Basically we'd be working harder to only get kicked down to where the government wants to keep us.

Regarding parking lots in Downtown San Diego. If there is an event, such as a ball game occurring, the lots in downtown will jack up their rates during the event. What usually is $5-$9 will suddenly cost $20. It should be illegal, but it's been allowed for decades.

California has the highest gas prices in the nation. We have a ridiculous "gas tax" which was supposed to go toward fixing our horrible roads but a huge chunk of it has been spent on an over budget high speed rail train to nowhere and to bike lanes for the benefit of bike riders who pay NO tax to ride on the roads which are squeezing cars out. In fact, gas is actually cheaper in Hawaii than in California which makes no sense whatsoever.
