I haven't read the book but I can clearly realize everyone one of them in my life. Especially when it comes to friends, we hung out with people just because we know them for a long time even if they don't bring any value into our life. Great video! and that moment when you feel everything is meaningless, i guess everyone experiences that at some point, glad that you are back!

What do you mean they don't bring any value in your life? Unless your definition of value is only material. These friends can create these brief moments of pure bliss, euphoria and feeling connected, the ones that get hard-written into your memory so much that a simple reminder of that moment will bring out a tiny amount of that bliss that you felt. Otherwise you use money to spend on goods, on people you love, on opportunities to do something awesome or on ecstasy and have once in a lifetime day of love and euphoria or buy a thing you really wanted - all these induce some variant of happiness or pleasure that you seek and get from these friends of yours, even if it's short-lived. But it all comes down to the same thing - it brings you happiness, offsets negativity in your life and makes life worth living. So if you say that your house, your car or the new thing you bought bring value that your friends don't, then you are wrong. Would you say your beloved dog doesn't bring value to your life? It brings more happiness that you otherwise pursue by buying things you want. So these friends of yours are just as valuable as any other thing that makes your life more positive. Actually, if they bring you more joy than any material thing , then they are bringing the most value to your life and deserve to participate and have a place in one of your episodes of life. If I misinterpreted your post and turned out condescending, well then I'm sorry for the blabber :)

The parenting rules were especially interesting for me because Peterson argued that hitting your child is worth it if it means that your child learns the ability to be a social person. He argues that hitting your child now is more helpful then them being bullied because they haven't learned to trade etc. Roughly speaking.

Regarding spanking. I am a parent. This was my philosophy. 1) Never spank in anger. 2) Spanking was really only used prior to our son reaching an age when we could discuss why something was wrong. 😢3) After a swat on the butt, I immediately picked up my crying son, held him close, and told him I loved him. 4) I never spanked him after he reached an age when I could reason with him. When he misbehaved, he lost privileges. Bad behavior always had bad consequences. I never forgot that I was his parent, not his best friend; there is a difference and parents who confuse this boundary parent poorly.

Dad voice does the trick 99.999% of the time, I’ve sparked her twice in her life and immediately felt bad and realized that’s not how you teach a kid anything besides to fear you, do you want your kid to fear you or listen to and respect you? Everyone has a unique way of thinking, there are no two people the same. We all try to coexist, and the best ways are the ones that are in general good for everyone. The way he delivers his message is more like of a father figure, speaking loudly with pathos, and is what resonates with the male audience. He is saying a lot of good things, and some that I don't find as the best ideas or solutions to some dominant problems people have these days. But, if he helps some people with these "rules" good. I just have a few remarks and additions to these rules which from my experience are beneficial. 2 better said: you are responsible for your own happiness. Treat yourself with respect, which may be a rule of its own. 4 aim always for the best you can be. And, if you want to compare yourself to someone, compare yourself to who you want to be, not the yesterday You unless you want to get stuck in the past and what to creat same old. 5 is highly debatable, you are fickle, people are fickle, and that's not a measure to teach your kid good social skills. You don't like lots of things, you have bad days, other people have their own agenda, so if you teach that kid that "you have to behave the way I like it or else..." later he will get crazy by trying to please you, or everyone, in order to be accepted. That's a recipe for disaster, especially if you are an aggressive parent, that's the way to create a people pleasure, or a neurotic child. Rule 5 should be: teach your child values( supposing you know some ) and don't let your kids do things that you know will be hurtful for them. If it happens that you want to stop the kid doing things you don't like, be authoritative, not aggressive, and don't slap him. That will teach him the same technic of reacting to others, that's the way to create a bully behaviour in your child. 12 indulge in light, playful things, don't do only stressful, boring things, don't take life too seriously. It may also say, be kind whenever you can with everyone, pets or humans. Indulge in gestures of kindness, which stimulates the production of serotonin making you happier. I think another important life rule to abide by is, treat others the way you want to be treated because everything in life goes full circle. What you give is what you receive. But let's say, simplifying life down to a few good rules, is a good start. Sincerely from Toronto, with one R 🙂

Some of these points are some tumblr shit. And the good points you can't argue with are vague and extremely obvious. ''7. Stop caring about what others think'' I would change this to, stop caring about what people think who don't have your best interest in mind. You should not stop caring about what your loving family thinks, or your dearest friends. ''9. If you dont want to do something don't do it'' What if I don't want to exercise, sleep or be kind? This is a rule that directly contradicts all your other rules potentially. ''- dont argue, let them win, victory isnt worth it' Quick way to let resentment happen and slowly crush yourself ''- do not tell anyone they are wrong, ever, be friendly and cooperative '' I don't even need to explain how wrong this is. Do not tell anyone they are wrong, ever? Like... in every scenario? Even when you are teaching someone? You must not have thought much about this one. I hope you have not thought much about these rules, and just conjured them up for a youtube comment. Because if these are genuinely your concrete rules for life than it has a lot of holes.

The problem with the truth is you can;t unhear it. Now this does not mean that all is true and it also does not mean that all is false either. It at best means I better stop talking about the truth and seek it within myself.

More info just lead me down a rabbit hole of doom. At the end of the day it was all on me. I believe ot was a mixture of time and exercise. Time-wise I just got fed up being a mini miserable Arthur Schopenhauer. Then I looked at Nietzsche and Tolstoy who seemed to have similar realizations about the meaninglessness yet somehow braced it in a more positive light so to me that alternative was better than being a miserable Schopenhauer. But yeah time and exercise is what helped me. What helps you may be different.

First things first. Make sure that your chemistry is fine. Exercise, Read some books, Meditate (MUST), Do NoFap, take cold showers. Set som Goals you Work towards. If it's hard. Try to find meaning in taking a cold shower everyday, Meditate for 10 minutes or more once or twice a day, workout atleast 4 times a week. Try Reading a minimum a book a week (52) a year. And find meaning in doing these things. Also make it a "challenge" to no fap or watch pornography. If you do these things you will feel a lot of meaning in really really short time

Rule 1. Stand straight, with your shoulders back. Rule 2. Treat yourself, like someone you are responsible for helping. Rule 3. Make friends with people who want the best for you. Rule 4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Rule 5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them. Rule 6. Set your house in perfect order, before you criticize the world. Rule 7. Pursue what is meaningful not what is expedient. Rule 8. Tell the truth, or at least don't lie. Rule 9. Assume that the person you are listening to, might know something that you don't. Rule 10. Be precise in your speech. Rule 11. Do not bother children, when they skateboarding. Rule 12. Pet a cat, when you encounter one on the street.

I thought this book was going to be great but personally speaking, I struggled to get to through the first half without finally giving up. Despite the first chapter being quite long winded and the use of the lobster example being quite unnecessary imo, until the first 'rule' is finally summed up as to stand proper. Which many of us know because of channels such as this, as we know it shows confidence and whatever else the research suggests. But are you really going to stand proper or dive deep into the human psyche because of that lobster example? Then came what felt at points non stop use of the bible. The manner and tone in which he explores and exbibits his opinions and ideas was just too much at points. I`d like to hear of anyone else who was a little disappointed once they got into it. I will of course have to pick it up again and finish it but I started Lost Connections by Johann Hari which was so simply written yet thought provoking on what can constitute a meaningful life in todays societies that it made me love reading again

Chad Perkins Its very odd that you say that. Why does one have to listen to him speak to understand him? The words written in the book are the same regardless. I personally find Petersons speaking style to be very annoying. He talks like a preacher, very confident and full of emotion, but if these rhetorical methods are used to mask mediocre content then it feels rather disingenuous. To say that you must listen to him speak is basically saying that the words coming out of his mouth and on paper matter less than his delivery which is meant to convince you on a far less rational level, through psychological methods rather than philosophical ones.
