We all know cats are intelligent animals, but have we really given felines enough credit for just how smart they are? Turns out, our cats know a lot more about us than we realize. In this video, we will talk about 12 things your cat knows about you.
Cats know where their owners are
Scientists have learned that cats use sounds to keep track of where you are in the house, even when you’re out of sight. Cats have a whopping 32 muscles in each of their ears, which allow them to swivel and rotate to pinpoint the source of a noise.
Domestic cats create “mental maps” that track where their owner is located based on the direction of certain sounds.
Your cat knows you’re talking to them
Cats may be the masters of indifference, but new research suggests that they are in fact fully aware when they are being directly addressed by their human.A study published in the journal Animal Cognition has shown that cats alter their behavior when they hear the recordings of their owners’ voices speaking to them. So holding that one-way conversation with your cat isn’t as crazy as you might think. Your cat will pick up on your tone and affection
Cats know when you are angry or sad
Cats can understand when their owners are angry or sad through the subtle changes in their facial expressions and body language.
A study by Oakland University researchers revealed that cats are more likely to show “positive” behaviors such as purring if they see that their owner is smiling. Frowning on the other hand was met with less enthusiasm. And if you're stressed, it's common for cats to become stressed in response.
They know they’re going to the vet
Cats are creatures of habit who thrive on routine. Even small changes to their environment or routine can be quite upsetting to them.
Cats hate it when you take them to the vet, so they have learnt to pick up on all the clues when a visit to the vet is about to happen. Your cat knows you're going to take them to the veterinary office because you take the carrier out or you may be a little more nervous than usual so they may try to hide.
They know you fall for their manipulations
Recent studies suggest that cats have refined their meows specifically to manipulate people-and it works!
When they want something, cats will often purr in a plaintive way, or make high-pitched, hard-to-ignore meows that their owners find difficult to ignore.
What’s more is that cats don’t make those meows at other cats. For the most part, cats meow only to communicate with humans.
Cats know when you're sick
Some diseases cause chemical changes in our bodies, which can produce unique smells that some animals can identify in a person's breath or skin. Cats and dogs have an acute sense of smell, and so have the ability to sniff out a chemical change in a human body caused by a disease.
Another instance where cats sense hormonal changes is when we are pregnant. Cats can sense these hormonal changes and act differently in response, often becoming clingy and attentive.
They recognize your voice.
Your cat can tell you apart from outsiders based your voice.
A study conducted by scientists at the University of Tokyo found that cats can recognize recordings of their owners’ voices and tell them apart from strangers’ voices.
Your cats knows when you are afraid
One amazing skill that your cat possesses is the ability to sense fear. When we are fearful, we change a bit. We breathe heavily, we tense up, our pupils dilate, and perhaps we tremble a little. It's on full display and our pets can sense that.
Plus, when we are scared, our bodies secrete a series of hormones, one of which is called adrenaline, and our cat’s powerful nose is able to smell it. Cats often mirror our emotions and get nervous or tense when we feel anxious or afraid.
You are coming home
Cats have a built-in internal clock that guides many aspects of their lives.
Cats internalize our schedule because it's important to their routine. If we always leave and come back at the same time, it's common for our cat to be waiting to welcome us when we return.
And even if you get home at an odd hour, your cat can pick out the sound of your particular car coming down the street, and they are always listening for it.
Where you have been
A cat’s sense of smell is 14 times better than that of humans, which makes it very easy for your cat to keep tabs on you! You pick up scents from everything you touch or everywhere you walk by. Cats can tell if you've been in a grocery store, at work or if you have visited a friend who has a cat of their own.
They know when you call their name
A study published in the journal Scientific Reports showed that cats do know their names-even when it is called by a stranger. In fact, cats may also know the names of the people living in their household.
Cats know that your baby is weak
Cats are intelligent animals and have very strong maternal instincts. They know your little one is dependent and the most vulnerable.

My cat didn't have a mother, so I rescued her when she was about 9 days old, I I fed her, taught her how to pee and poop, I was basically her cat mama, let me tell you, it was a struggle, getting up every 2 hours to feed her, making sure she was warm and cozy ( kittens in this age can't control body temperature) I didn't even know if she was going to make it, because she was so small and so week... Now she's 2y old, and she never leaves my side, she literally follow me, she coddle with me every night to sleep, and every time I'm sad she lay in My chest and gives me little kisses, i never felt this type of connection with any pet before, I know she loves me, she shows me every day... she's the most loyal creature I ever seen ❤️

@@magne7771Yes, she does. I bottle fed a kitten whose mother rejected her (I know for a fact, because I was fostering the mom and whole litter). I kept that kitten, and she was so devoted. She got old and sick, and many trips to the vet didn’t help. The night before she died, she came to bed and was very affectionate. She looked like she was telling me, “Thank you. I love you.” Right after that, she passed away in the night. She seemed to know it was her last chance to show me how she felt about me. I hope I see her again someday. RIP Pattycake ❤🐈

Wow! I was always a dog person, but one day at a friends home there cat ran away after giving birth to 4 kittens. The mother was young so who knows? Anyway the kittens were getting cold and not eating and dieing off. I was there when the last kitty was looking bad. I said let me try feeding her and Thanks to God she ate!!! I said I'll take her home and bring her back tomorrow. I kept her!!! From 3 days old till she had to be put to sleep at 11 years old from cancer. I am tearing up as I write this! Yes it was crazy work to feed and make them go potty but the love you get is true!!! I so miss my Pookie!!!🐈❤❤❤❤🙏

The cat in my profile is called Bengy, he is 14 years old and I took him in after his owner passed away ... He behaves literally like a dog, he follows me around, comes when I call and he literally always by my side, If I was to go for a walk he would walk by my side like some kind of trained dog ... I have never seen a cat do this .... I had him now for a little over 2 years and he brought some much happiness to my life .... I love him so much, the fact that he is now getting old and maybe passing away is already freaking me out... I can't imagine my life without him anymore ... yed I did not raise him ...

My first cat was extremely motherly and protective of me. At one point when I was getting a spanking from my father, she actually attacked him pretty viciously. It baffled me for years, but every time I started crying as a little girl, she would run over and bite me. Now, I understand it's because she was trying to pick me up and carry me away, like I was her crying kitten. She was my hero. Anyone who says that cats are aloof or indifferent to their owners simply doesn't understand cats.

Cats are so much more emotional and caring than people give them credit for. It's just that their facial expressions and body language are so subtle that unless you know what to look for you might not pick up on most of the signs. Once you know how to speak cat though you can see all their tiny reactions to everything around them, a whole world opens up. I adore my cat, she's so loyal and loving and I love every second I get to spend with her.

I have 2 cats who I adopted 13 years ago. I have a degenerative spinal disease that causes constant pain & my boys are so tuned into my pain levels, it’s incredible. They know when it’s a worse than normal day & barely leave my side. My mum was always more of a dog person but the first time she saw my boys react when a particularly nasty pain spasm hit she completely fell in love with them. In her words “I never knew that a cat could look so worried before”. And to think, when I adopted them they were terrified of people after a bad first home. I didn’t know if they’d ever become lap cats, never mind therapy cats! They really do make living in constant pain that bit easier to cope with.
@beebuzz959
@beebuzz959 Жыл бұрын
I heard lap cats are actually a gene, and it's getting rarer because the cats who have it are usually fixed. Both pure-bred and feral cats don't tend to have it, and they're the majority of cats who breed. So if yours never turn, don't hold it against them, they still love you and will be affectionate in other ways.

We adopted our first cat Cleo when she was 14 years old. Poor thing was scared even by sneezing. But with our patience she changed. She was really smart. I teached her to give paw, sit down, death cat and ring bell when she wanted something. On beginning of covid we moved out to countryside and there was a feral cat. In same time unfortunately Cleo past away. We started to feed feral one. We noticed that he was watching us. So we gave him space and time to do it. Slowly building trust. It took him over a year to trust us enough to allowed us to stroke him. We call him Cleo legacy. I think that without her love, and gratitude we wouldn't ever think to help a feral cat. Our feral is named Tyson, he is a big boy. Biggest softy ever. He decided to "live" with us. We provide for him a cat flap, so he still can go hunt, and protect his territory. It took him nearly 2 years to learn how to meow ;) Tyson is about 12 years old. We think that Cleo left happy hormones smells around us, and also Tyson saw another cat happy with humans. We think that combination of all of that helped him to trust us. It's his second winter with us. He learned sound of car when I'm coming back home from work. He knows when I'm getting up for work. He managed to survive as a feral for so many years, so he's really good observer

I live with 3 cats I didn't want to adopt when my girlfriend mom died unexpectedly 5 years ago...but did. Now I couldnt imagine to be without them. In my world, I live with 3 hairy roommates. I dont "own" cats. They don't wear collars. If I get up to grab a beer, come back and one of them took my seat, I let them keep it after a reminder that I was sitting there first. They eat at the same time I eat. Something unusual happenning outside that draws me to the window means battle stations called.....we all are looking. I came home from work after a day that i forgot both my wallet and lunch/drinks on a VERY HOT DAY. I was alone at the jobsite and drank what was laying around in the truck here and there and I made a HUGE mistake trying to plow thru the day. That day (1 day in 30 years of electric work) I became so dehydrated that even my cheeks were cramping. I called my girlfriend (never ask her for help) on the way home and told her I was bigtime in trouble and PLEASE bring Gatorade, water, anything.....because I was too sick to even go into a gas station. Literally crawled up the steps to my apt and upon opening the door the cats slowly walked up and were sniffing me (usually they bumrush me).All 3 sat next to me for hours and barely ate what my gf put out....until I got back on track and they realized its cool again. Internal clock? I have one cat that wakes me up EVERY morning within a 10 minute range......4:30 am-4:40 for breakfast. She meows in my face and bunts until I say "Alright, alright! and some cusswords. Seriously, there have been more than a few times she saved me from being late for work because I left my cell (alarm) in the living room. Its a ritual that occurs at precise enough times that I can tell you that the "Crown" of the Great American Building in Cincinnati re-lights at 4:43 am after being off for a few hours every night. Plus, they all can open doors by staring at them. If you think cats ignore humans.....you never lived with one.

I lived for 15 months with 3 most loving, adorable and sensitive cats (who belonged to my landlady). I waa mostly bed ridden after a partial foot amputation and in thick bandages and her 3 cats would be with me constantly all through. Infact her oldest cat saved me once when she came and sniffed by foot for quite a while. So I just knew something waste very wrong since animals just know... I rushed to the hospital immediately and they unwrapped my dressing to find my sound had split wide open full off dripping. pus and blood! Thanks to her quiet, most intense cat my foot got saved from gangrene again. Contrary to people's notion about cats being indifferent animals, they are intact, very loving and caring... I managed to stay cheerful, positive and sane day to day, simply because of her 3 loving cats and 2 affectionate dogs. Nothing so pure and selfless as the unconditional, deep love of the animals once they trust you! They are truly created in God's image...❤️

What a terrible wound, you must've been so worried.! I hope your foot has healed and your health is better these days. I'm convinced cats and dogs have the sixth sense. They not only know when something is wrong, they know exactly where the problem is. Whether it's a health scare or an emotional issue, our animals just know!

@@nicolelillis2077 Dear Nicole. Thank you for your sweet msg. Actually both feet are still in bandages 22 months later n 3 months ago I hit 200 BP and had a cerebral stroke. Its only because of my home less animals I can stay cheerful. My dogs come to visit me every morning with sad gooey eyes and put their paws up on my knee and we have a long talk.. The stray cows too come to my ground floor and stand and just stare and I keep some vegetables for them too.. My animals are my anchor and lifeline. One particular stray blacky guards my door and when my Dr comes to do my dressing she comes in and sits and stares at him. Fortunately he loves dog's so he understands why... Im so blessed! Every morning I open my door and take my blessings from my strays then start the day. I've been working voluntarily for 4 decades with the homeless and they are so loving and protective.. Yes, they understand everything thats precisely why my cats n my doggies are very gentle and at times sniff my bandaged feet too! Nothing lile the animals once they trust you. One time I was in extreme pain because of my period, kept lying in bed for 10 hours just crying, throwing up, and making pain noises, and the cats all sat in my room for 10 hours not eating, drinking, or plying, only to go to the litter box for a minute to then return, they only got out and ate/drink/played when I got better enough to leave my bed. That day they never pured, never sat close to me, never fought with each other as they always do, but just sat quite and never left me, I saw in that loyalty, emphathy and tenderness.

My favorite cat ever Jerry was acting really strange in front of an open window. He was meowing and turning and looking very concerned and trying to get my attention. He didn’t settle down until we went to bed. The next day there was like 5 cop cars at my neighbors house. I went to work, came home from lunch and they were still there. So I looked it up, it turns out my neighbor had killed his wife and they found her rolled in a rug in a closet. I think that cat smelled what happened and freaked out and was trying to warn me. Pretty incredible.

My calico kitty headbutts me repeatedly, trying to distract me, when I get really stressed. She has taken over the roll of emotional support animal since my other cat died suddenly in 2021. I have a carrier for each cat. (My cat and the cat I'm fostering) I leave the carriers in different parts of my apartment with a blanket in each. That way they have the choice of sleeping in them. It shows them on a daily basis that they have nothing to fear about the carriers. They enjoy having personal caves.

We love the cats we care for and we know that they feel comfortable in our presence. I've always loved cats as far back as I can remember. The first we "adopted" in our present home back in 2001 was a grey Persian who just turned up on our doorstep one cold evening. One saucer of warm milk and we were all hers. She was obviously house-trained leading us to think her "owner" may have died or simply abandoned her. We called her the grey ghost aka Fluffy. The first thing she did on entering the house was to go downstairs and make a bed in the spare bedroom her own. We used to have a routine when I was still working; each Friday I'd bring fish and chips home and my wife would say to her "fish Fluffy" so when I walked in, there she was sitting on the arm of the sofa waiting to enjoy the meal (fish) with us. She was a darling.

A cats purr has a pitch that has healing properties in it particularly with bones. So if anyone in their house hold has broken bones or had bone surgery you may fined that your cat will sit by you and purr. I heard of a dog that was injured requiring surgery and the cat would sit next him all day purring. A mother cat will purr a lot when she has kittens perhaps it helps with bone and growth and development? I also had a cat who knew the Vet by name.

And scientists still aren't exactly sure how cats do it! Part of their mystery and specialness is the magic of purring. I learned something interesting about cats, both domestic and wild. Cats that purr don't and can't roar. Cats that roar, can't purr. My friend works in an office at the San Diego Zoo. Sometimes the handlers bring the cheetahs around for socialization. Cheetahs are very shy. My friend said that one day they brought one of them in and that cheetah purred the entire time it was walking through the building!

6:55 I would advise you to keep the cat carrier out as one of the sleeping spots for the cat, and in fact put a towel in there or something to make it a comfortable spot. Once you actually need to use it, you want the cat to see it as a trusted safe spot. To add to this, when you use it to transport the cat, instead of a towel put an unwashed shirt in there that still smells like you.

I love how cats are so sensitive and once you've earned the love of a cat, you have something very special in your life indeed! After getting my booster over a weekend recently, alternating feeling normal with feeling not that great, I would stretch out on the bed and sleep until I felt a little better. My now-grown cat, who has been with me since he was a few weeks old, and who is not a lap kitty at all, would stretch out next to me keeping one paw on me until I felt better and got up. While on the bed like that, if I rolled over and away from his paw, he would reach other to be sure that he kept his paw on me the whole time. I am sure that he was taking care of me in his way. And every night, after I am in bed and as soon as I turn off the over-the-bed light, he comes from wherever he is in the house (or even from the foot of the bed if he's planted himself there) and sort of pats the top of the cover near my face. He used to want me to lift up the cover a bit and crawl under the covers under a little tent I'd form with my knees bent, hanging out there for a while, purring. Now he just comes and pats, looks under the cover to be sure that I'm tucked in properly, and off he goes, back to the foot of the bed to spend the night. I didn't have a cat for about 10 years before he came into my life. Now I wonder how I could ever be without him because he is so special. I'm moving to Europe next year, and he's moving there with me! Thank you for this informative and interesting video about the wonderfulness of cats. As the writer Colette put it, "There's no such thing as an ordinary cat." They are all such individuals, and all so special!

Our two boys and I have developed a lot of communication skills with each other. I'm not very graceful, so when they're in the way where I might trip or hurt them, I wave my hand a certain way and say "scootch!" I developed slow blinking with Oliver--who shows to appreciate it. Sampson uses more human cues like coming to me when I call his name (because it usually means he'll get pets). Both the cats know where the red dot comes from. If they know where we put the laser, they'll come towards it and look at it, then us, then it, then us, etc. This is their way of asking to play with it. There are tons of other communication tools I can't remember right now. It's great knowing my cats and I understand each other.

I used to only have dogs but when my dog died a cat appeared out of nowhere on the roof by the window in my room. For context, I was extremely depressed at that time, I was barely eating, not much sleep either, and I would be crying a lot in my room. It was the worst year of my life for many reasons. So the cat would appear outside the window every day, she wouldn't leave and was very insistent, so I started letting her inside. Best thing I ever did. I never knew cats could be so attached and devoted to people, so knowing of everything going on, and so protective. The cat was like a mother or a really devoted nanny, she was steering me so I would go eat, go to sleep, rousing me our of my sadness, doing everything to get me out of that funk and return to a healther routine. I think it was meant to be, and it was pretty magical how she appeared. In fact there were strange and unexplainable things around her appearance, but I'll leave it at that. I used to think of myself as a dog person but now I don't see it that way, both cats and dogs are loving and loyal, they just express themselves in different ways.

One thing I've found cats to never be is indifferent. They're simply past masters at keeping it cool, unless something is very wrong. They're intelligent enough to discern the difference

I had a sweet orange tabby that I could tell he loved me. He'd come running when he saw me, and would make little mewing noises. So cute. I fell down in my kitchen once, and just sat there for a bit, stunned, and he ran over to me and climbed up into my lap and was searching my face and sniffing me, looking concerned. He was upset I was hurt. I miss him so much. He would go on long walks w me. The neighbors would remark about how they'd never seen a cat go on walks w humans. I didn't need to put a leash on him.

Cats know you're on your way home. They know where you hurt, and will purr lying on the hurt area. Well, one of them stayed close to my broken leg for 6 weeks, the other avoided me for 5! That one (that avoided me), is not just meowing, she howls! Gets attention, yes, but not the good kind! And no, she's in any pain. The other cat, will meet me at the door when I get home.

Yes! My cat did that, too…if I had an ache anywhere, he would put his head on that spot. I thought I was crazy, until he sniffed my dog’s mouth, gave me a serious look, and meowed continuously. The dog had a history of dental disease, so I took him to the vet in the morning. Sadly, he had oral carcinoma…and my cat “diagnosed” him! I thank my cat for having time to try treatment, and say goodbye to our dog. I don’t think I would have had that, without him! ❤🐈‍⬛

My cats had names for my late husband and they stood in the front window and called him every day at coming home time. His favorite little girl kitty called him until the day she died, nine months after he did. "Meow wow woo!" I can still hear her call him after thirteen years.

As a cat owner I agree with this 100%. However my cat loves his kennel. He knows he gets to go outside on the deck if he goes inside it. I've seen him pull the door open go inside and close the door behind him. (I still have to latch the door tho). He also knows when we are going for a walk around the block and sits perfectly so I can put his collar on. As a former dog owner , I have to say cats are smarter.

Whenever i left the house on foot my cat would follow me, he was smart because he'd keep a distance from me. I used to go to a friend's place to play videogames, often even sleeping over. Then the next day as i would go back home always on foot he was there, hanging around my friend's house probably waiting for me. It's something that always intrigued me. Miss you Tigro.

My cat was like that. He used to wait for me outside any neighbours’ houses where I was babysitting and walk back home with me. So protective.

I have had cats most of my life. The one I have now, is the only one who likes to go to the vets! She has a front door opening carrier and gets right in (with very little coaching). Every 6 weeks, she goes to the vet to get her nails clipped. She defininately likes the feel of her nails short. I've never seen that before with any of the other cats.

I drove a school bus for over 30 years and parked near home during the day my cats would come running to the bus to meet me if I came home with a spare bus they did not come running home to meet me unless I drove it home for a couple of days but they still remembered my regular bus when I came home with it after repairs or maintenance they also know the sound of your personal vehicles

Cats are contented to answer to any name you call them if you use the exact same tone with saying the alternative name to their official name. I have a bad habit with cats that I often give the one cat multiple names and they always respond when called, even if they haven't heard the new name before

My cat used to be able to tell when I'd step out of bed even when he was in the basement at the other end of the house. I'd put one feet on the ground and the little guy would come running and meowing just to say hi......He wouldn't ask for food, water, treats, or anything else, he just loved to say hi :).

My cat manages to completely ignore my voice in person, I seriously doubt he'd react more to a recording! 😅 Also, when I was a teenager I had a rabbit who would hear and recognise my mom's car coming down the street. It's not just cats.

When I lived in France and talked to my family in Germany on the telephone I also wanted to talk to my cat for a moment just for him to know I‘m still there and not gone forever. Some people may think it‘s crazy but we have such a strong bond that I knew my absence would make him sad.

When I had COVID, there were two days in particular when I was VERY sick. During those two days, my cat lay against me purring. From what I can tell, she was concerned about me and lying against me and purring was her way of trying to treat my COVID. And, I can honestly say, that after the worst of COVID had passed, when I could finally stand up again, there was my loyal cat, begging to be fed.

To make vet trips less stressful: take off the front and top of the carrier, line it with soft things and use it as an extra bed for them day to day - that way, it's not as traumatic for them to be put in it when necessary
