Your "refusal to call" was your lack of intelligence by concluding "I'm no dummy". Good call, keep it up!

In 6th grade I wrote a story that very closely follows these steps for the heroes journey. At the time I had no idea, I just wanted to write a compelling story, at the time I read many books so I perhaps intuitively wrote like this. I got offered by the principal to publish this story but I refused because I felt my story wasn't good enough to be published. Thinking back to that story I wrote I realise now that I wrote a full, engaging and coherent story without even realising and I'm kicking myself because I lost it.

You also probably inferred the structure from movies since many in the 80s and 90s followed that structure.

My absolute favorite REFUSAL OF THE CALL is in ROCKY when he turns down the big fight.

Rocky is always refusing to fight. That’s part of what makes him such a compelling character. We all know he can fight, namely he can take so much punishment and keep getting up and moving forward. I think in nearly every movie, he has that moment, and for different motivating factors. Yeah, they get a little campier and redundant as they go on, but I still think there’s heart in all the sequels. Rocky was and is Stallone’s baby, and it shows in the work.

I love how there’s imagery of early scenes in films that the narration is describing for later moments in film.. weird… don’t describe the climax while showcasing an inciting incident

Excellent video! One nitpic: When describing the climax, you showed scenes from the first act of Legally Blond. A better example would be Elle in the courtroom scene, showing off what she's learned in law school.

I think i know one of the readons Harry Potter was so popular, nearly every year is a new retelling of the Hero's Journey built on the previous Journeys

I wrote an outline for a book and without knowing it, the story hits these beats. I'm happy to know I had some kind of structure even if i didn't realize it lol Thank you for this video with digestible explanations, this can help stabilize and develope my story better playing with these elements.

Succinct, and wonderfully illustrated. You could call it a checklist, but you'd be selling the ideas far short of what they deserve. Thanks.

Imagine writing a script based on this cycle where the hero’s journey is based on an escape from nihilism. It’s compelling enough that it attracts interest and investors with a signed deal. Then under the guise of “a polish” is drastically rewritten without your input as a formulaic beat sheet.

This is my pet-peeve - this isn’t the hero’s Journey. This is Voegler’s adaptation of it called the writers Journey. No shade on Voegler, his work is great and he never makes the claim as near as I can tell - it’s voices on the internet who keep making the incorrect claim.

I get the reason for the refusal but ffs don't make the protagonist's reason so petty we lose all respect for them, and don't spend half of the first season stupidly running away from obvious reality.
