12 Stops? Did Zcam LIE about The E2-F6 Dynamic Range? | Cinema 5D Test

Zcam boast 15 stops of dynamic range for the Zcam E2 F6 on their website. However, there was a lot of controversy when Cinema 5D relased their Dynamic range test for the Zcam E2 F6 as well as Zcam f6 footage. This lead to a deeper dive into how this test is performed, and how other cameras perform on this test as well. The big question still remained for the users who haven't bought the Zcam E2 F6: what's the dynamic range of the camera? Although I don't have a scientific test, I can speak on what I am able to get out of this camera. Compared to using other cameras such as the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro G2, I can safely say that yes, this camera does perform as if it has 15 stops of dynamic range. I feel more comfortable in HDR conditions compared to other cameras that also have 15 stops of dynamic range.

Realized I didn't clear say no: I don't believe that Zcam lied. After using the C200 in raw and the URSA Mini Pro G2, I believe this camera not only performs like it has 15 stops of dynamic range, but also performs better than those camera with that regard. What do you guys think about Dynamic range test? Are you a numbers or performance person?

Excellent video. Your footage makes your point for you, and just judging by it I don't give a blip if the camera has 12 or 15 stops of dynamic range. It performs really well in skilled hands, that's all I need to know. As an engineer I love test benches and metrology but cameras are about producing art, not taking scientific measurements. Anyway... the F6 is way too expensive for me, I'll have to settle for the M4 and turbomount but I'm expecting great things.

What's up fellow KZfaqr. Your video quality is ridiculous! Crazy good! I own a ZCam E2 and recently got an A7SIII and I find myself missing the way midtones are handled on my E2. I also think the out of camera rec709 colors are excellent. Another thing I took for granted on the ZCam is how good the auto white balance is. It nails it.

My 1st shoot with the F8, I didn't know what I was doing, and was able to recover EVERY blown out highlight. That won me over :) My thesis film was shot on a BMPCC and we had no detail from windows in our interior shots

Great video sidney - your z-cam videos have been super helpful! So do you use a -1 or -2 exposure lut even with the F6? Do you use the james davis lut from the FB group?

Hi Sidney, thanks for your video. I personally compared the F6 against the Bmpcc 6k. In my test you can see that DR on both of these is the Nearly identical. As you said the f6 retains a lot of information in the highlights but not in the shadows. Have a look on my video if you want. I also compared it to the the red dragon and clearly the red has more DR. So realistically the F6 has around 12-13 stops

Hey man! I was comparing it with my experience with other cameras such as the UMPG2 & C200. Cameras that both claim 15 stops of dynamic range. With these cameras, I found myself choosing between the highlights and My Shadow information. A lot about getting the most out of any camera is knowing how the log gamma curve is designed to function. Because this particular curved handles highlights much better, it's much easier to push the exposure three stops over and recover detail. Which to be honest, the manufacturer's did design this curve to be Overexposed. With that in mind, looking at your test you exposed both gamma curves similarly; but because of that Latitude you have in the highlights you can easily push that a little bit farther north to get more information in the shadows. Because of the limited highlight range on the bmpcc, you couldn't apply this same method. Same with the UMPG2. On the zcam, the highlights can be normalized and recovered in post. Especially with the right grading technique Seems that your exposure is on the darker side as well. You can see from my shots that have the sun in frame, I'm not really suffering any loss of detail in the Shadows or in the clouds outside of the sun. This also goes back to waveform information for me as well seeing what information I captured. The only reason I say this with such confidence is because of working with skin tone that also fall into that lower or IRE / NIT value. My analysis was based off of pure recovery ability because that's going to really allow you to push your image in a certain direction which is really what dynamic range is all about.
