Portugal is no longer cheap. The cost of living has risen a lot in the last few years, perhaps due to the huge influx of digital nomads and holders of Golden Visas. According to Numbeo, Lisbon is now almost as expensive to live in as Madrid, which wasn't the case five years ago. And it is all due to rents going up much faster than inflation. Still, Portugal does have its positives, such as safety, political stability, a warm climate, and the fact that it is in the Schengen Zone.

Taiwan is great! Here now, and cost of living is very reasonable and no need for a car. The noise China is making is the same noise it's been making since 1950. Invading TW is shooting itself in the foot since we're making all the semiconductors for them. As long as that is the case, the silicon shield will continue to hold. I'll take my chances here over the very real crime in the US. Don't even get me started on the fabulous healthcare (in English and can make all my appointments ONLINE in English and can usually get same or next day appointment with a specialist with NO referral). Only two more years until permanent residency, right now it's an employment visa.

President and Prime minister make cca 3000€ a month, so if you need that much - it's not the inflation, it's your lifestyle. Living in the EU, 2,5 hours from Vienna or Budapest, 2 hours from some of the best and cleanest beaches, and 2 hours from some of the best skiing destinations in the alps is not comparable to some of the places on these lists, where you struggle to find if you even have an embassy in the country. You don't need a beachfront condo as a "young professional" in 2023. There are towns 45minutes from the beach, on the freeway, where you can buy a large house for 80-100k. Also, the security compared to most of these places, especially some of them (cough*Zanzibar*Serbia*Dominican republic*cough) is not even comparable. If you don't marry someone crazy and don't dabble in dr00gz, you won't find many safer places on the planet.

Cambodia also has an incentive of being a dual currency country, in its native Riels, and the US Dollar. Both are legally, and widely accepted as money. As of 2017, some [most ?!] ATMs give you the option of either, AND the one I used in Siem Riep allowed up to $1000 withdrawl with only a $5 fee (very cheap transaction fee for $1000 which is .5% !!!)

But I listened and/or learned from the "older fellas" from the myriad of Euro countries, and of course Can, USA, Aussie, kiwi, etc. saw alot of BS from Thailand as it pertained to expats, allways changing their tourist visa regs on a whim every 6 to 12 months. that got old, and i felt like the govt was treating us like 2nd class people (as expats), even though the majority of us were non-criminal activities, and just living there. i agree with what you said. Taiwan might not be a great fit for those accustomed to the North American lifestyle. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries on Earth. Due to its mountainous terrain 90% of its population is concentrated in a narrow strip in the west between Taipei and Kaohsiung. The towns/cities are very densely populated with little elbow room. The western strip is also heavily industrialized with resulting air pollution, partly domestic and partly of China's doing, due to westerly winds. It's certainly worth visiting (I was there for three weeks) but not sure about living long-term.

Taiwan, look at Hong Kong. That is Taiwan in 10 years. Georgia is FULL of Russians now driving up all prices. Slovakia, all countries near Russia and Ukraine are inundated with migrants and the displaced. Chile, possibility. Latvia. Again, with the war going on.... Mauritius, Dominica: island living is risky for food security in a turbulent world unless they can sustain their own population, which would then make it ideal. Cambodia, Asia in general is culturally very different. If you can handle that.... Bosnia and Herzegovina?! These two countries are presently at each others throats, readying to go to war, like they were in the 1980's! Sri Lanka: possibility but when there is a high population if VERY poor people you are constantly a target, which gets old after awhile. Ecuador: where I live (Quito). Uses the dollar which is one less thing to worry about. You NEED Spanish here. Safety, "You need to be careful in certain parts of Cuenca and Quito"?!!!!!!! Cuenca and Quito are two of the safest cities in ECUADOR! Gyayaquil is so bad you don't even want to pass through it but no mention?!. Who the hell is doing your research? Google? I think you wrote this in an afternoon after spending the morning online, but never actually going anywhere. Tanzania: I have no confidence in your research now.

I wonder if any of the African or South American countries that are on the list have those flies that lay eggs on a mosquito and then the lava bury into your skin and grow into worms!! Yikes! Is it called jiggers or something? I long ago heard about this from Peace Corps volunteers who had worms growing in their skin because they air dried their underwear outside in the sun and the flies lay eggs on the fabric. Once worn, the person’s body heat hatch the eggs and the lava start digging into your flesh without you knowing until they become full grown worms and form bumps in the skin. Yikes!

As of late Portugal has become too expensive to live in, plus new laws regarding taxes will get deep into retirees and peoples pockets, crazy taxes, rents are threw the roof, real estate getting sky high, how the heck are the locals dealing with this high cost of living now, because high cost locals seem getting fed up with foreigners living there now, truly crazy!! i remember the old Portugal!!

Listen!!. Exploring new countries is such a rewarding experience! For first-time travelers, I'd recommend considering destinations that offer a mix of cultural richness and natural beauty. Personally, I've been fortunate to travel to over 10 countries thanks to careful budgeting and smart investments.I wasnt financial free until my 30’s and I’m still in my 30’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 2 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future.

Can be a bit boring depending from where you look at this. Mauritius: Interesting, cannot comment unfortunately. Domenica: Partly true. Not for everybody. Cambodia: Do not understand the recommendation for a place to live tbh. BiH: I would rather list Croatia instead. Sri Lanka: Difficult to switch from a rich country I'd say. Equador: No own information. See Sansibar. Sansibar: Well, good known by many tourists but living there, hm - not sure... I wouldn't agree as it is too far away from standards i would consider minimum requirements for everyday life.

@donamills863

That’s our plan. I lived overseas in different countries as an adult and couldn’t wait for the day I came back to America. I am Spanish citizen and my son lives in Madrid. I go to visit him yearly but would not live there for anything. As I’ve aged I’ve realized I don’t have patience to deal with government bureaucracy, bad customer service, Socialism, government corruption, dirty streets with grafiti everywhere, a smoking society that has no issue throwing their cigarette butts on the streets. The streets are littered with it and the beaches as well. The healthcare quality that everyone raves about is not all that. I’ve seen how my son has had to navigate the “Sanidad” system. At our age healthcare is the number one priority. So it is a hard NO for the jewel crown of retirement. Oh, and I also have lived in Panama too on and off during several years and I still have friends there. Another hard pass. We live on 5 acres of land in NC, we pay $1,100 in mortgage, have some crops growing and we are an hour away from the best quality care in the world, Duke and UNC. We can travel for extended periods of time but will only be back.
