I got my first phone at 7, but my parents both worked and I was home alone and also nervously responsible. So if your kid is responsible and trustworthy sure, but maybe not at 5. I think he would do well with a kids smartwatch that is connected to you so they can call you and see the time, some have games. Gabb has a cool phone lineup.

Just got this phone yesterday. I can say from experience using it, for 120$ it actually decent. Amazing for a kids first phone!!!
